Review: 'Parks and Recreation' - 'Ron and Diane': The Duke and Duchess of Pawnee
Lucy Lawless, Megan Mullally and Christie Brinkley add up to a sweet, funny episode
On "Parks and Recreation," Ron (Nick Offerman) gets Leslie's thumbs of approval.

A review of tonight's "Parks and Recreation" coming up just as soon as it's about to get warm all up in my jazz...
I have no idea if there will be another season of "Parks and Rec" after this one.(*) Nor, I suspect, do Mike Schur and the other people making this show. But I get the sense watching this season that the writers are doing all the things they would want to in a final season, just in case. And because this is fundamentally a happy, optimistic show, that's largely involved the characters finding happiness in different ways.
(*) Maybe I'm just a wide-eyed optimist by nature (which is one of the many reasons I love "Parks and Rec"), but I'd say the odds favor at least one more season. Not that the ratings are good, but "The Office" is ending, "30 Rock" is ending, "Up All Night" is being perpetually retooled, and the only comedy on the schedule that seems a lock for renewal is "Goon." I think NBC will be glad to be done with the era of low-rated critical darlings, but at the same time, they can't cancel everything, and they own this one (though the lack of a big syndication deal so far doesn't help), they get to employ Amy Poehler, etc.
So Leslie and Ben are engaged, Tom is finally learning to balance his entrepreneurial spirit with some actual business savvy, April is finding things she cares about besides Andy, etc. And happiness abounded throughout the warm and funny "Ron and Diane."
Even the title itself suggests a kind of ending. Season 2 gave us "Ron and Tammy," season 3 "Ron and Tammy Part Two," and season 4 "Ron and Tammys." This, instead, was "Ron and Diane." Tammy Two was still around to cause trouble (and to give the video pixellation software a real workout), but ultimately Ron is in a successful, healthy relationship with a woman who deservedly gets Leslie's double thumbs-up. Tammy's not a real threat, though she remains an amusing one, and it's a sign of how strong things are with Diane that she's more bothered by the emotional intimacy (by Swanson standards) he has with Leslie. That's largely a misunderstanding, and one that Ron clears up very quickly by exposing Diane to his cool jazz cat alter ego Duke Silver — a running gag the show has wisely not overused, allowing it to have extra impact when used for a half-silly, half-sweet moment like that. Leslie yields her role as Ron's emotional protector, but she doesn't stop being his friend, meaning we can still have good stories between the two of them for as long as the show runs — and maybe even welcome Tammy back if the right idea comes along. And if not, Lucy Lawless isn't a bad fallback position at all.
Meanwhile, Jerry's holiday party offered emotional closure of all kinds. We got a reminder that Chris and Ben originally arrived in Pawnee as a team, as Ben got to witness the benefit that 15 therapy sessions a week with Dr. Richard Nygard is having on Chris's fragile psyche. And with the introduction of Christie Brinkley as Jerry's wife Gail, and the opulence and joy of the party itself, we were reminded that away from the office, Jerry has a damn perfect life away from that office, and one that makes whatever mortification he suffers there as both the schlemiel and schlemazel of the parks department utterly irrelevant. Even Tom, April and Andy seemed to recognize that Jerry's too good a guy to deserve the constant mockery,(**) even if none of them realized they'd locked him out of his own party on a cold, cold night.
(**) I'm not sure it was planned this way, but Jerry — who was little more than a background extra in season 1 — turned into something of a comedy heat shield for Leslie in season 2. At the start of the series, remember, it was Leslie who was the target of Tom and April's scorn, and one of the big improvements the show made over that first hiatus was making her co-workers acknowledge Leslie's awesomeness (even as they didn't understand her), so those two — and, later, Andy — needed somewhere else to direct their sarcasm.
And yet even as characters mature and change — even as Ron can entertain the thought of vacationing in Europe if it's with Diane — "Ron and Diane" also demonstrated how much comic life there is in "Parks." Ron's delight at being at the woodworking awards was marvelous (Nick Offerman giggling is never not funny), as was Ben's ongoing response to the reality of Gail Gergich, April's complete lack of physical strength (and the way she deftly turned it into another excuse to mock Ann), the many embarrassing things (by Swanson standards) Leslie knows about Ron, the reaction of the women in the crowd to meeting Duke's girlfriend, and a lot more.
if this show is going to be back next season, I think there are plenty of great stories and jokes to tell about the people of Pawnee. And either way, the remaining 13 episodes of season 5 look to be one long, happy, funny ride.
Some other thoughts:
* As a man of a certain age — who was a boy of an impressionable age when she appeared in "National Lampoon's Vacation" — I'm largely helpless to the charms of Christie Brinkley. She's never really turned into much of an actress, but I think for this part the value that she brought as herself — that Jerry is married to Christie Brinkley — mattered more than her few line readings.
* As we know from her Kaitlin character on "SNL" ("Rick! Rick! Rick!"), Poehler is often at her best when she's playing a character so enthusiastic that she leaps over the line into obnoxiousness, and it's even more fun in Leslie/Ron scenes, because you can always tell that Leslie knows how much this bugs Ron, and that she takes no small pleasure in it.
* Also, Leslie's Google alert for "Ron Swanson" finally paid off after seven years!
* "An Evening at the Improv with Ann Perkins: The Webseries." Get on it, NBC and/or Rashida Jones.
* The In Memoriam clip reel at the awards was a nice touch, with the pictures of the coffins each man designed for himself before he died.

December 6, 2012 at 11:14PM EST Reply to CommentThat was one of the best episodes of the year. I love the idea of the In Memoriam and Jerry's perfect family. Ben's reaction to Gail was great as well. I hope that it comes back for another year.
Also if for getting nominated Ron gets 2 bottles of liquor what will Leslie get him for winning?
zzk Not to mention 2 Lagavulin 16s. Those are ~$50/bottle. No wonder Lucy Lawless is threatened by their relationship. An expensive gift for "just a friend."
December 7, 2012 at 4:51PM ESTEMMA One bottle was a Congratulations gift for the nomination, the other was for Christmas.
December 8, 2012 at 7:29AM EST("Merry Congratu-Christmas!")
sanalayla Yeah, I thought one was for the awards and the other was for Christmas. It's not out of character for Leslie to go over the top with a gift. Wasn't that the plot of last year's Christmas episode? That Leslie always gets people the perfect gift and it makes it really hard for them? Diane shouldn't feel threatened by that, since Leslie does it for everyone.

December 6, 2012 at 11:59PM EST Reply to CommentAlso agree this was one of the best of the year.
The show has gotten a lot of mileage out of both Jerry's unbelievable circumstance and Ben's camera glances, but the melding of the two was nothing short of comedy gold, nay comedy PLATINUM.
We rewound that moment at least four times to drink it all in.

December 7, 2012 at 12:14AM EST Reply to CommentAs much as I love this show and never want it to go away, I also thought the same thing about The Office. As Vince Gilligan always said, he'd rather go out on top and leave them wanting more then for people to claim he's Jumped The Shark
CinemaPsycho Normally I would agree with you, but The Office is actually kicking ass this season. Tonight's episode was quite hilarious and felt like the show I used to love.
December 7, 2012 at 2:54AM ESTParks and Rec never even had that slump to begin with, so there's no reason they couldn't keep on going at high quality.
Joe Have to agree with Psycho on The Office picking it up this year, especially tonight, & I think we can largely attribute that to Greg Daniels coming back. The Office had only one truly strong season post-Daniels/Schur & I don't think that's a coincidence. As long as Schur is around to guide Parks I'd bet on it to remain strong, be that to the end of this season or even 2 or 3 more.
December 7, 2012 at 3:18AM EST
Remember, you can probably trace The Office jumping the shark to Schur and Daniels leaving.

December 7, 2012 at 12:28AM EST Reply to Comment"Are you anemic? Let me check your pulse." Ann! Never not funny, except when she's actually telling a joke. The one-liners at the Duke Silver gig from Woman 1 and Woman 2 were also really nicely done. Overall I laughed at this episode more than any other this season, I think.
CinemaPsycho We need an Ann vs. Judy Hitler slap-fight.
December 7, 2012 at 2:56AM ESTTJ If Alan's theory about the writers doing all the "final season" things now while they can holds... any chance that anemia joke is setting up a Ludgate-Dwyer pregnancy?
December 7, 2012 at 9:09AM ESTMike I really doubt they are setting up a pregnancy. As cute as Andy and April are and as much as they are starting to grow, they still have a long way to go before anyone, even the characters of the parks department, would feel comfortable with them raising a baby.

December 7, 2012 at 12:52AM EST Reply to CommentAnyone think the "wood" comment from Tammy 2 (Something like, "Look at all the craftsmen wood in this room needing to be worked.") was a callback to Megan Mulally in 'Will and Grace' when she said, "He brought the wood in, and it looks like he'll be leaving with it too."
CinemaPsycho Probably not.

December 7, 2012 at 2:10AM EST Reply to CommentI know the ratings are low and shows like to go out on a high note, but Parks and Recreation has been so good for so long now, I'd hate to see the plug get pulled. We gotta have at least one more season.

December 7, 2012 at 4:17AM EST Reply to CommentI really loved this episode! I'm not sure it was quite as emotionally satisfying as last year's Christmas ep, Citizen Knope, but it may have been funnier, while still including some really sweet moments.
Also, I'm really hoping for a season 6, even if it's just a shortened final season. I want Schur to have the opportunity to plan ahead and give us a true ending, rather than something that could serve as an ending, if necessary. I know the ratings aren't great, but I'm not convinced that NBC has anything in its development pipeline that would perform much better on Thursday nights. And they can talk all they want about the success of Go On and The New Normal, but that all feels a little premature until we see how well they fare when they air after Betty White and not The Voice.

December 7, 2012 at 5:50AM EST Reply to Commentthat was a surprisingly great use of Christie Brinkley for the show. Love love love Ben's reactions to Jerry and Gail (and his family during the song and dance).
Stan I love Christie Brinkley, but something seemed off about her. That first scene she's in she seemed very unnatural. I couldn't tell if she was trying some kind of accent or what. It just seemed weird.
December 7, 2012 at 10:28AM ESTlouisjab "I've thought about it a lot, there is no logical explanation"
December 7, 2012 at 10:38AM ESTsepinwall Stan, if you watch the "Vacation" clips I linked to above, you'll see that that's really just her line delivery. I don't remember the last time I heard her interviewed, but this is the way she talks when she's acting.
December 7, 2012 at 10:57AM ESTDezbot I didn't even recognize her. Too much plastic surgery :(
December 7, 2012 at 11:39AM ESTStan I guess you're right, Alan. She just seemed more awkward than I remember. But it's not like I was expecting Claire Danes or anything.
December 7, 2012 at 3:30PM ESTCol Bat Guano The advantage of the fake documentary format (or whatever they're doing here) is that you get moments like Ben's look to the camera upon meeting Jerry's wife.

December 7, 2012 at 8:49AM EST Reply to CommentThat was... wonderful. What a sneakily excellent season this has been--very like Season 2.
Ron Swanson for... "Chair."
Also, THE DUKE! I've been waiting ever since that first episode for the Duke's real return. I think Alan is right, though, that they first came up with Duke Silver at a time when they hadn't quite zeroed in on Ron Swanson's character yet. Still, I'm glad they kept the Duke, to keep Ron from becoming too one-note. Also, what a great, great reason to bring him back. In an episode full of great emotional beats, Ron Swanson voluntarily taking a person he cares about to meet the Duke might have been the best.
What a show.

December 7, 2012 at 9:12AM EST Reply to CommentFantastic episode! I've been a little down on Parks & Rec the last few weeks --- particularly last week when I found Leslie's antics more annoying than funny --- so it was great to see them hit another home run.
Every single thing worked in this episode. It was a joy to watch. The return of Duke Silver at the end was just the icing on the cake.

December 7, 2012 at 10:16AM EST Reply to CommentExcellent episode. Lots of laughs:
-Donna: "Merry Christmas, b*tches!"
-Ron's speech going off the rails as Tammy, uh, distracts him, and really the entire awards sequence.
-The lady tell Diane she's going to kill her, with an incredibly serious (and hilarious) look on her face
I of course want to see more of this show, but if it goes into Office territory, it's going to be sad. If it did end after this year, it would suck on one hand, but on the other, it would be one of the most perfect sitcoms ever. (I'm giving a pass to the first couple episodes, as they were still figuring it out, like most shows do.)

December 7, 2012 at 11:00AM EST Reply to CommentThe sweet beats were too many to count in this superb episode. I particularly liked how it was Donna who overruled the Jerry-Dinner group to invite Jerry to dinner. I think there's always been an unwritten understanding in the series that Donna has a soft spot for Jerry as well as in general a good heart underneath her charismatic exterior.

December 7, 2012 at 11:46AM EST Reply to CommentI need to rewatch to catch the things I missed from laughing too much and from the ending getting cut off because I didn't pad the DVR setting. But even without that, I'd watch it again because it was so damn good.
In addition to Ron's happy giggle always being funny, we got Ron's girly run to go play with the all the tools, Ron admitting Leslie is a friend, Ron opening up to Diane, and DUKE SILVER! My jazz was all warm and fuzzy by the end of the ep.
Not only does Jerry have a perfect family, but he has a ton of friends. I wonder if the group will now take off their Jerry filters, given what they've seen at the party about Jerry. I mean, GARY :-)
BTW, did anyone else think Gail was flirting with Chris when she took that hair off his shirt, or was she just being super-perfect? I don't think this show would go in that direction, but it was an odd moment.
Steve
December 7, 2012 at 12:56PM EST Reply to CommentI've loved the show since the Paul Schneider days. But the recent inclination to give everyone a happy ending has turned it from optimistic to downright sapp. The revelation that Tom et all's party invites had been sent to spam was like womehting from Saved by the Bell.

December 7, 2012 at 1:29PM EST Reply to CommentThis was a good episode but I feel like Tammy 2 is overstaying her welcome, I don't know. I wouldn't mind if we don't see her for a while (I have nothing against Megan Mullally whatsoever).

And, wait, there isn't a syndication deal? Doesn't Community have one? How doesn't P&R? They have an extra season and are equally as funny and probably more appealing to a wider audience in syndication....? It just doesn't make any sense...I mean, if Yes Dear and Reba do/did, how can P&R not?
