A review of last night's "Parenthood" coming up just as soon as I regift a cancer patient's gift basket...

"Together" didn't have as many "My, when did our living room get so dusty?" moments as a lot of recent "Parenthood" (though no one's going to judge you if you felt that way after, say, Kristina got off the phone with her mom), but I appreciate that the show isn't treating Kristina's situation as an excuse to shamelessly aim for the tear ducts throughout every episode. There are sad moments here, as Kristina grapples with how powerless she is, and with how little her own mother seems to care compared to Camille(*). But some of the best scenes in "Together" took this situation as a license for laughter, rather than tears, whether it was Kristina having to emotionally support the Lessings, rather than the other way around,  Drew shamelessly exploiting the situation to draw Amy back to him, or Kristina and Max sneaking off to play skeeball and enjoy some forbidden sugary treats. There is a lot of darkness in this kind of situation, but there's also unexpected joy and silliness, and I greatly appreciate that Team "Parenthood" is trying to cover all the bases, rather than use the cancer only as an excuse to wallow and try to finally get Monica Potter and Peter Krause some Emmy love.

(*) Of course her mother doesn't care as much, though: she's not a Braverman! If it wasn't for Jasmine's mom and other relatives, I would assume that anyone who marries into the family is legally required to sever all ties with their inferior blood relations.

A lot of "Together" was calibrated towards smaller moments, and towards setting up situations that will no doubt lead to crocodile tears down the road. I like where we are with Amber and Ryan at this point, for instance. He's clearly troubled, and you understand exactly why Zeek is worried to hear this man he otherwise really likes is dating his granddaughter, but for the moment Ryan's issues are only manifesting themselves briefly, and in harmless ways (insomnia, drifting off into space in an intimate moment). You can see how much Amber wants to do something more for him (and Mae Whitman was, unsurprisingly, terrific in this episode), but this is too far beyond her frame of reference, and at this point, nothing's happened that Ryan can't wave away as minor.

And where I thought for sure that Julia's decision to ignore the social worker's advice and let Victor see his old friend was going to blow up in her face, a fine time was had by all. For now, it's just a reason for Julia to again recognize that however much progress they've made with their son, they still have a long way to go. Learning Spanish may not solve everything, but you could see in Victor's expression that he's learning to appreciate every attempt his new mom and dad are making for him.

We close this week on Kristina's first chemo session, as so many emotions wash over both her face and Adam's. As rough as things have been so far for them this season, I suspect they are about to get much worse, which is yet another reason I was pleased that "Together" was, relatively speaking, a relatively light episode for all things Braverman.

What did everybody else think?

Ana You're terrible! LOL - Wonder if it works on 30-somethings.
Those Braverman grandkids (sorry Sarah's kids' last names) were sure getting a lot of action last night. I did cringe a little when Amber jumped in the sack so quickly with yet another beau, even though I like Ryan more than all other guys she's slept with before.

pamelajaye and it was a nice ending with the Spanish tapes, but aren't the Braver man's rich white folk whose kids went to good schools in which a couple of them excelled and went to college and even law school? Heart-tugging as it was, I find it hard to believe Julia has to study (at least introductory) Spanish. She seems more the Junior Year Abroad type.

I didn't cry - odd for me - but Kristina's call from Mom got me close

belinda I laughed so hard at that moment because I totally didn't do that once.

      I mean what

And sure Julia is educated, but the explanation can be as simple as...she didn't take spanish and took some other language when she was in school.

I really did like seeing Victor smile watching her make the effort. Sweet moment.

The Kristina storyline has been great all season, but I do really like where they are going with Amber and Zeek's story. He gets it knows Amber enough by now that he knows there probably isn't much he can do to convince her otherwise.

Drew using Kristina's plight to benefit him seemed in really poor taste, but pretty understandable for a kid that just had his heart broken.

I am a fan of Julia and Joel, but they always get the worst stories of all the Braverman Clan. Out of a really great season I feel like the Victor story has been pretty not good...

Oh, it's in horrible taste. That's why, to me, it was so funny, because I can absolutely see a kid in Drew's situation doing it.

birkoff1 I didn't take it as Drew being seedy and manipulative, just giving in to his love. I think they very clearly chose their camera angles to show the ex increasing her physical contact and his uncertainty as it happened. There's no question she hooks up with him out of pity/guilt, but whether he was intentionally playing to that is far less certain.

What a bummer to see Drew transformed from a sensitive and caring boy into a manipulator. I hope someone calls him on it. It was ugly move on his part to say the least. He is a senior in high school, he has been through a lot, seen his mother go through a lot. He knows better. Ugly behavior.

Angela I don't think Drew's suddenly been transformed into a manipulator. He's not the kind of kid who's going to lose his moral compass because he just experienced his first bad break up. He didn't plan to control or influence Amy. Drew only realized what was happening while it was happening.

His apology at the beginning of the conversation was sincere. Amy will also have to learn how to show her concern without expressing it physically with a guy that she knows is still in love with her.

How could he not resist Amy's physical attention? What's he going to do? Tell her to stop? That was his worst offense. Sounds pretty typical of an 17-18 year old kid to me.

Does anybody else think that Kristina has to die for the benefit of the show? I don't have anything against the character, and Potter has been doing great this year, but the great thing about Parenthood is seeing different family situations that we can relate to. Seeing how the Bravermans deal with grief would be a natural way to progress, I think. We've already seen the show go for the happy ending instead of the right ending when they put Crosby and Jasmine back together, I hope they don't make the same mistake again.

ireneinidaho If the show gets another season - I hope, I hope! - I can see Kristina dying and how the family deals with that being a big part of the next season. But if this is the final season, I can't imagine them ending it like that. It would be awful.

Can Sarah possibly be any more annoying and obnoxious? Such a perky jerky when she showed up at Amber's!! Of course, to service the plot she had to find out about Ryan so she could blab to her dad, but surely there was a less irritating way for her to do so.

I guess we're just going to ignore any fallout from Julia's quitting her job -- no financial problems or emotional reaction to going from high-powered, overworked lawyer to stay-at-home mom. I agree with whoever said that family gets the worst stories, and the Victor adoption has never seemed realistic to me.

SlackerInc Irene, I agree that they should show fallout from Julia's quitting her job, but disagree with you on two other points. I liked the way Sarah quizzed Amber, thought it was cute and in character. And I like the Victor storyline too. When he was talking Spanish to his friend, I said to my wife "they need to give him opportunities to speak his native tongue" so it was a great moment to see Julia with the Rosetta Stone software (total product plug but I have used that before and wish I could afford it because it is really good).

The only thing I truly think missing from this episode is how Peter and Kristina are dealing with lying to Hattie about the seriousness of the cancer. Everyone seems to know the chemo is going on, but wouldn't that signal to Hattie that it's not as good as they hoped?

Maybe I just don't know enough about cancer treatment, would have been nice to have a little clarification on that for uneducated viewers.

It is such a relief that Ryan doesn't have PTSD based on things that normally happen in war; like killing people, seeing one of your band of brothers bleed out in your arms, being forced by horrible happenstance to perpetrate unspeakable acts. But, this is Parenthood, and, of course, so Ryan instead suffers from a much milder (ridiculous) form of trauma known as Agricultural Advisory PTSD. This is a very TV-specific malady, in which your advice to a rural farmer unwittingly causes his demise, while your hands are entirely clean, and a series that treats every major issue with callow, shallow disrespect is able to "tackle" a horrific and prevalent societal disorder without all the oogie, yucky-yuck reality. I had my money on either crocheting or badminton causing Ryan's trauma, but I can't believe I didn't consider gardening.

I have a very strong feeling that Kristina's mom is not a bad mom; in fact she is probably a terrific one, possibly even top 10 on an international scale. It isn't that she doesn't want to be there for her daughter, but rather that she can't handle all the shiny supremacy of Braverman parenting, sure to highlight her imperfections.

God, that was so close! Somebody actually ALMOST broke up with a Braverman. Sorry hunky, pre-med boy, the Braverman beacon is pulling me back into this mumbling, disconsolate boy's bed again.

Are people seriously considering the proposition of whether Kristina might DIE? What show are you watching?
Odds of Kristina dying: 1,000,000,000 to 1
Odds of Kristina Overcoming Cancer: 1:1
Odds of Kristina Curing Cancer: 2:1

SlackerInc I thought the thing with the farmer was a realistic and totally legitimate issue. It is cliche to have every returning vet be an infantryman who had people die in his arms etc. Most of them (all the vets I know) served in a war zone but not as infantry. It can still mess you up, and he's right that the guy would not be dead if they hadn't interfered with his choice of crop.

Lepidoptera Person A lives 1 mile from the epicenter of a massive 8.3 earthquake. His home is destroyed, possessions burned, the family cat lost in the rubble. Person B lives 100 miles away. The ground shakes for 20 seconds, the dishes rattle a bit, and her porcelain cat figurine is chipped when it falls from a shelf. Technically, both are earthquake victims, but to lump them together is to badly misunderstand the plight of Person A.

In the same fashion, this storyline is disrespectful to the thousands of veterans suffering from legitimate "shell shock" based on first-hand experience.

I watch Parenthood with my wife, Scooby Doo with my kids, and thematically they are remarkably similar shows. Both set up obstacles for a set of impervious characters, who, when the dust settles, will not only emerge unscarred, but laughably victorious.

The writers on Scooby Doo were wise enough to never have Shaggy stumble upon a grisly triple homicide. It seems to me a shame that the Parenthood scribes do not recognize their own thematic limitations.

Cancer and PTSD are weighty, real-life horrors, and Parenthood is neither weighty nor capable of a resolution that resembles the lasting scars of real life.

MPL Person A is involved in a war and comes home suffering from PTSD because of reason X, which we all know is the only legitimate reason. Person B is involved in a war and comes home suffering from PTSD because of reason Y, which we all know is the wussy reason. Person C gets mad about seeing Person B on TV because of how disrespectful it is to person A. Makes sense.

I know this is probably a minor gripe, but is anyone else finding the Lauren Graham character and her mannerisms increasingly annoying instead of appealing? When she showed up at Amber's, I felt like it was supposed to be amusing, but I just wanted to throttle her: the mugging, the "cute" way she reacted--ugh.

madmeme 'Increasingly' annoying? How could it be humanly possible to go higher than the teeth clenching, body shivering level of annoying that she's been from the beginning of the series? It's a major chore to get through most scenes she appears in.

And the strange thing is that she seems to have the exact opposite effect on every non-Braverman male in the P-Universe - to whit: they all seem to think she is the most delightful, beautiful female they've ever met. They must not get out much.

I just love this show. It's the only one of it's kind that I know of on TV in too many years. Truly a family show. Whatever happened to more like this?

I'm not a huge fan of Monica Potter but that end scene and all the different emotions that she was feeling couldn't have been more revealing or more perfect. And of course Peter Krause was as amazing as usual.

I don't know how the writers manage to do it. It can't be easy with a cast this large, but they pack a punch into every 2 minute scene given to service each story-line. And for all it's minor faults, there's so much good in Parenthood that I always look forward to watching it.
