A quick review of last night's "New Girl" coming up just as soon as I have a deaf grocer...

"New Girl" plots generally trend towards basic hang-out comedy, but the show will at times go in a wackier direction, with mixed success. When Schmidt took Winston to buy some crack a few weeks ago(*), it worked because it was a prank gone out of control, with both men acting like the characters we know. Jess getting involved in selling horse semen to Russian gangsters last week was iffier, but at least worked as a good Jess/Nick character story, while Schmidt and Robby going undercover to bust up Cece's arranged marriage plans was too silly, even with all the good one-liners.

(*) I was at press tour and didn't have time to review that episode, but I must once again mention that Max Greenfield's pronunciation of the phrase "crack cocaine" is my favorite thing so far of 2013.

Nick going undercover to prove one of Jess's students is a killer was definitely a case of the show descending too deep into wackiness — and yet almost working just because it was fun to watch Jake Johnson play the ridiculous character of Julius Pepperwood. (With an accent that sounded modeled on Nick's father.) "New Girl" isn't the kind of show where Edgar was ever going to turn out to be a murderer for real, so the only way for that story to function is for everyone but Nick to treat the idea as dumb. That way you still get the Pepperwood antics, and you can even get the creepy revelation about Edgar, his wife and their duffel bag, but Jess isn't being stupid along with him.

The Pogo storyline was much better, in that it was dealing with how the four roommates get along (and, in a funny side gag, how baby-talking Cece is only partially a member of the group), the things that drive them nuts about each other, etc. That said, it still felt rushed in spots, and Jess's pogo being that she's a know-it-all didn't feel right. First of all, it's not really a side of the character we've seen much of — she's not Ross Geller or Ted Mosby. Second, there are plenty of well-established traits about her that are easily mockable — most of them no doubt leading to her contributing to the Annoyance Bowl (as counterpart to the Douchebag Jar). And while I enjoyed the introduction of the Bowl — and the amusing Zooey D. miming and dancing that led to said introduction — I don't know that an episode about all the things the roommates secretly mock about each other was the right episode to put it in.

So lots of individual moments that were very funny (including the Winston scenes that bookended the episode), but an episode where both stories felt like they needed tinkering with.

What did everybody else think?

I really enjoyed this episode overall. It reminded me a little of the "glass ceiling" episode of HIMYM (and so help me if Jess becomes anything like Ted Mosby I'll be very, very upset), but still a lot of laughs.

I'll have to watch it again, but was Julius Pepperwood wearing a spy appropriate black turtleneck?

Favorite part of this episode for me had to be Nick cooking bacon with butter and salt. I lost it.

BrettPoker That's not how you cook bacon? If not, then it should be.

Everything about Julius Pepperwood was awesome. Like someone mention on Alan's twitter, a buddy comedy starring Burk Macklin and Julius Pepperwood would be beyond hilarious.

louisjab That was my pick: as soon as I cook bacon with butter.

Worth mentioning that this was part of the "I need to start taking care of myself" day for Nick.

Am I the only one disappointed that they Jess didn't read more of Julius Pepperwood: Zombie Detective. Winston plowing through Z is for zombie was my favorite moment of that episode.

Yes it was over the top but to me this episode was a lot like The Office's episode The Injury in season 2, a one off goof that mostly worked.

If this became the new norm for the show then I'd have a problem with it but that's unlikely. I hope.

Didn't like the Annoyance Bowl. Seemed more like a rip-off of the Douchebag Jar and it doesn't really work within the show because Jess is poor and couldn't put money in it the way Schmidt can afford too. What's next? A complain vase for every time Nick complains about something?

I like how this show is being more and more at ease with physical comedy. Jake Johnson and Zooey Deschanel are pretty good at this and it provides a funny break in pace. I'm a sucker for physical comedy and Nick struggling with the tire and then getting stuck in the barn window made me laugh.

I loved the episode, but was this aired out of order by any chance?

Why was CeCe at the loft, in a robe as if she had been sleeping there? Why was she getting along with Schmidt as if he wasn't stalking her a week ago?

I feel like there was supposed to be an episode between last weeks and this one. Am I the only one who felt this? Am I nuts?

sepinwall They mention this when Cece first appears. She and Schmidt are not back together; the plumbing in the apartment she shares with all the Russian models is on the fritz.

My husband and I were really cracking up during this episode, mostly because of the silly humor and physicality of Apricot Jess and Pepperwood Nick. We're not sticklers for continuity so who cared whether or not they were quite in character or hitting the right tone for the show. It was funny!

I agree with your general opinion. Even if it was outlandish, it was funny nonetheless. It was also nice to have CeCe and Winston plot. Those two picking on Schmidt's toenails had me laughing (as did CeCe's attempts at determining her pogo.

I hate to ask this, but was the tent, indeed, pitched? It wasn't clear in the opening but it was in the end.

I thought Jess' reaction when Edgar was pulling out the book from his bag was hilarious!

And Hannah Simone was especially great in this episode.

I'm in the minority, but this ep didn't do it for me. This is 2 weeks in a row that I've preferred the Mindy ep to this one.

This wasn't one of my favourite eps, but I still enjoyed it quite a bit. I'm not really bothered if shows like this occasionally go past the point of credibility into wackiness for an episode, so long as it generates the laughs, and I thought they accomplished that well enough here.
For the record, I felt like last weeks plot was worth it, merely for the line "There's more to A Father's Love than just semen..."

I think the fact that Nick calls Jess "Jessica" sometimes is hilarious and somewhat touching. The show is really great. One of the best comedies on TV right now.

I'm pretty new to this show, but doesn't it seem like Schmidt is the type of guy who wouldn't be caught dead with gross toenails?

Schmidt's shaved eyebrows have scarred me for life.

And I'm sorry, but Julius Pepperwood is not Bert Macklin. Macklin would eat him for lunch...or at least, take him out for lunch :-)

I wasn't crazy about this episode as a whole, but the excerpt from Nick's detective novel was pure gold. More Nick Miller writings, please!

I love this show so hard. I know it's a sitcom that will probably go on for several years and therefore won't put Nick and Jess together until the end, but dammit do I ship them hard.

Thought Johnson, a Chicagoan, did a very nice take on a certain Chicago accent. Also, Johnson is a huge Bears fan. Julius Pepperwood is obviously a nice little nod to Bears' defensive end Julius Peppers.

I thought there were some funny parts (as always), but it was one of the weaker episodes this season. Like Alan, I do think part of the joy of New Girl is just watching the actors throw themselves fully into whatever bizarre situation they find themselves in, but it helps when the rationale behind that situation is at least a little bit grounded in reality.

All that said, Nick is probably my favorite character on television, and Schmidt needs to regrow his eyebrows as quickly as humanly possible.

How dare you question the beautiful pairing that was Schmidt and Robby? They were going to enlist in the Navy, quickly rise through the ranks, and take Cece to the Naval Officers Ball!

maria Totally agree, and I was really shocked to read that Alan didn't like Schmidt/Robby. I thought they were by far the best parts of the previous episode, which was otherwise very weak. I hope we see a lot more of them in the future. Comedy gold!
