Chevy Chase leaving 'Community'

NBC sitcom will film last 1 or 2 episodes of season 4 without Pierce

Almost from the moment Chevy Chase joined the cast of "Community," he has talked about wanting off of the NBC sitcom. Well, today, his wish was granted, as the veteran actor was allowed to leave the series before filming of the fourth season ends.

As first reported by Deadline, and confirmed for me by Sony, there are 1 or 2 episodes left to film of the show's 13-episode order (because the show won't be premiering until February 7, there won't be room on the schedule for additional episodes to be ordered, even in the incredibly unlikely event of a ratings uptick).

Chase has never been the most popular person on the "Community" set, and at public appearances featuring the whole cast, there was always a palpable tension between him and his co-stars. "Community" creator Dan Harmon (before he was fired by Sony for non-Chevy-related reasons) made his own feud with Chase public when, at one of his Harmontown shows, he played a profane voicemail message the actor had left for him in the wake of Harmon insulting him at a "Community" party.

Last spring, Chase told Huffington Post's Maggie Furlong that, "I think, if you know me and my humor over the years, you know that this is certainly not my kind of thing. I probably won't be around that much longer, frankly."

He made it almost to the end of this season, but not quite.

UPDATE: So, since his actual exit isn't surprising (though the timing is), it's time to start brainstorming ways the show can deal with his absence for the remaining episode(s) to be filmed without him:

1)Pierce dies off-camera in a gruesome and/or mortifying way. This is how "Two and a Half Men" got rid of Charlie Harper, but at the start of a new season.

2)They stunt-cast a replacement or replacements for Pierce without any of the characters (save Abed, of course) acknowledging the change. Even if it's only for one episode, you have a different Pierce in every scene.

3)A large cardboard cut-out of Chevy appears in every study group scene, possibly with word balloons conveying offensive punchlines at the appropriate moments.

4)Someone from the larger Greendale universe — Leonard, Magnitude, Fat Neil, etc. — gets a promotion, possibly reciting the exact dialogue written for Pierce.

5)Something else fabulous to be suggested below. Go.

UPDATE 2: I'm told the finale was filmed in advance, which means Chevy will be in that but not 1 or 2 episodes preceding it, which limits our options somewhat on how to deal with his absence. Factor that in accordingly.

This kind of reminds me of the last few sentences from Bill Simmons' review of THE WRESTLER, which with a little tweaking for this specific situation read as follows: "It's not a surprise that Chevy's time on 'Community' had a sad ending. Like it could have ended any other way."

Alan do you know if there was a particular incident that caused him to leave early, or if Chevy had finally just had enough of it? I'm curious to see how they''ll address his absence in those final 2 episodes

Can't wait to see how they write the final two episodes. They should just replace him with a flashy guest star and not say anything about it.

Too bad, not a Chevy fan but enjoyed the character of Pierce Hawthorne. Can Dan Harmon come back now?

That Werewolf Guy No. They didn't let Harmon go because they "chose him over Chevy", but because his ego was too big to run the show smoothly (as in "keep it within budget and don't make working on this show a living hell for everybody involved")

Swearin It was also because Harmon's comedic style wasn't broad enough for the "new" NBC. Or as I'll probably be calling it next year, CBS's dumb little brother

Ian Whitcombe NBC wasn't the primary party involved in Harmon's firing, it was primarily a contract dispute with Sony.

Pierce was a good character, but was it worth the problems Chevy Chase caused? Probably not.

I think the writing for Chase's character was poorly written. Enjoyed him in the first season, but over the next couple he was just a mean, evil character. (Similarly, Chang's character was great in Season 1, but the writing of his character the last few seasons has been horrible).

Anyways, as long as Troy, Abed, Annie, Jeff, Britta, Shirley, and the Dean are there, can't wait for the show to be back.

Neeraj I think that a certain point Hawthorne's character became so repugnant that it just didn't make sense anymore that the group would remain loyal to him. When I read about the Harmon-Chase dustup I wondered if Chase's personality had affected (infected?) the writing of the show. I assume that all the characters are, in some ways, reflections of the personalities of the actual actors, and the writers couldn't help but make Chase's character a terrible person who everyone wanted to be rid of but were contractually bound to keep around.

It seems weird that they couldn't make it 2 more episodes to at least close at the season (and most likely series). Were the behind the scenes issues really that bad at this point?

Boy, I'm sure glad NBC decided to axe Harmon instead of Chevy. Now the creative direction of the show is in peril and the real problem is leaving.

I feel sorry for Dan Harmon and Community fans.

TL Pretty sure NBC didn't axe Harmon since his contract was with Sony, and it was up probably unlike Chase's.

Frankly, they could do something really interesting and honest where Pierce, after 4 years, leaves the group before exams or whatever. As tired as I am hearing about the business side of this mess, I'm interested to see how this works out on the creative side.

It'll be interesting how they deal with it because I thing the final episode has been shot, but they have two more to film. I haven't liked Chevy Chase since I was a child because that is his level of humor, but I hate to see Pierce just disappear.

Haven't they already shot the season finale? If that's the case, then Pierce is just absent for two random episodes. They would only have to really address his absence if there's a Season 5.

In which case, I'd opt for his death.

    That Werewolf Guy

The weird thing is, I'm actually with Chevy. Except for that one incident where he just went home early, instead of shooting an important scene that couldn't be re-shot later.

But he got humiliated in front of his family at a Christmas party by his boss, who wasn't exactly beloved by everybody who worked on that show either.

He complained about a lack of quality in the scripts, which seems absolutely true after the horrible last season!

He complained about how he got nothing to do, which was true, since after Pierce's great arc in season 2, he was only used as a walking senility punchline from then on.

He complained about how Pierce got more and more racist and how long it would take till they want him to use the n-word for laughsm which might be justified, considering how they turned Abed into a psychopath and Chang into a Nicktoon. (One could say that his use of "the n-word" was uncalled for, but note that he never called anybody by it, but instead just made a complain about its use.)

And note that he never said a bad word about his castmembers. He gave long interviews in which he talked about how unhappy working on this show makes him, but at the same time he usually praised the other actors.

So yeah, for now I'm with Chevy.

His complaint about the flanderization of the characters is especially spot-on.

Um...since they already filmed the season finale with Chase - I'm assuming they're just gonna have Pierce graduate and leave normally. Why hasn't anyone mentioned that? It's realistic if at least one character graduates and then leaves the group. No need to kill him off. And maybe Pierce just happens to not be around during the events of the 2 episodes [which are probably gonna be filler episodes, placed anywhere on the schedule].

I think killing him off horribly off-camera is a great idea, as is recasting the part with someone like Bill Murray where no one else but Abed notices.

I'd also be for a Sixth Sense riffing storyline where Abed realizes that Pierce was entirely a figment of his imagination; scenes from past episodes are reinterpreted to show that no one was ever talking to Pierce, they were talking to each other, and they never heard anything Pierce said, only Abed did-- again, things we thought they said in response to Pierce were actually in response to things said by other people. In the end, Abed realizes Pierce was a manifestation of some dysfunctional part of his personality and heals through it by ejecting that part of his psyche and permanently eliminating it in a sci-fi riff.

Since it's likely only for two episodes, it would also be pretty interesting to recast Pierce with... Dan Harmon. If either he or the powers that be would even entertain that idea.

They should have Pierce grow more and more awful to the rest of the group until he does something completely unforgivable to the point where it just doesn't make any sense for him to still be with the group.
