Elijah Wood and Jason Gann on 'Wilfred'

Wilfred

Jul 05, 2012 10:00 PM

TV Network - FX

We referred to this show as a 'man be dog' world, but perhaps it's a 'dog be man' thing, honestly we're not quite sure what the best way to put it might be.  What we do know is this -- in the televisual summer, a time when we're all groping for comedy that is meant to be funny as opposed to the unintentional comedy of some reality series, FX is giving us Thursday nights.  Thursday nights have Charlie Sheen and Louis C.K. and Russell Brand and this particular series in which your kind of sort of average individual sees a regular dog as a man in a bad dog suit.  Trust us, it's funny.

Tonight is unlucky episode 13 of the second season of "Wilfred."  Now, we don't call it unlucky simply because it's the 13th episode--we don't believe in such things--we call it unlucky because it's the last episode of the season and that is pretty unlucky.  We fully expect it o be a great episode, but the 'last episode of the season' bit does upset us.  We don't want "Wilfred" to go away, we want it to say with us forever, like a faithful dog... or a faithful dog in a man suit.  Wait, no, we have that wrong -- like a faithful man in a dog suit.  Yup, that's better.

We are, most definitely, in the home stretch for this season of "Wilfred."  Of the 13 episodes ordered (a lucky number to be sure), we have but three remaining.  Now, an effort is being made to stretch out the season a little by not airing a new episode next week, but we're not entirely sure that skipping a week alleviates the problem of having so few fresh episodes left.  There is just something about a man in a dog suit that makes us laugh, even if the man in the dog suit isn't really a man in the dog suit.  Or is he?  We get confused about reality sometimes.

There is something wonderful and wonderfully sad about this show.  It is entirely possible that the point isn't for it to be wonderfully sad, but we sometimes see it that way.  Here is this poor guy, just trying to make his way in the world, but he's constantly thwarted isn't he?  He's constantly stopped and told what to do, orders are barked at him.  Heck, he can't even cook for himself, can he?  Then, the poor guy, he's shoved into this dog suit and everyone thinks that he's just a plain dog except for one other dude.  Man, we feel bad for Wilfred.  Can't someone throw him a bone?

When you tell someone that there's this television show you love about this one guy who talks to this dog who talks back to him, you have to be kind of worried, right?  We mean, there's a strong sense that such a show may veer into "Mr. Ed" territory and people will look at you funny.  Well, we suggest when you talk about "Wilfred" that you mention that when the dog talks back he does so as an Australian guy wearing a ridiculous dog costume.  Trust us, we've tried the explanation on the subway and we didn't get any sort of strange looks whatsoever (in fact, we got the whole car to ourselves).

P.S. - Robin Williams is on tonight.

So you see, there's this dog who is a dog, but to his owner (or the human he spends a whole lot of time with anyway), the dog isn't a dog, the dog is man in a dog suit.  Now, if we were the owner (or the human the dog spent a lot of time with), we would spend our whole life in therapy trying to make the dog just look like a dog again.  We wouldn't care what it would take, we would do everything in our power to make it happen.  We're happy though that the dog here still looks like a man, because it makes for an awfully good TV show, the season finale of which airs tonight.

Listen, we have our sources, and our sources tell us that "Wilfred" is a pretty good show and most definitely worth watching not just in general, but this week specifically.  Right now you're probably asking us why exactly this is, but the truth is that we're not going to tell you, we're just going to suggest that you watch.  We are happy to tell you this much about the show -- it's going to have something to do with this guy and his dog who looks like a human to the guy, but to no one else.  Of course, that's not really giving anything away, that's what the whole series is about.
