Elijah Wood on 'Wilfred'

Last week, "Wilfred" started the season with two new episodes.  Next week, they will air but one new episode.  Here though, in week two, we are getting two episodes once more.  This is, as of this writing, the last time this season we know of there being two new episodes on a single night.  That isn't to say that things won't change in the future, that FX won't rejigger its schedule, it's just that for right now if you want two new episodes of a man and a man in a dog suit, you can't be looking towards the future, you have to be in the here and now.  If that isn't important, if a full hour of man and man in dog suit comedy isn't important, well, we just don't know what is.

We have been telling you all season that "Wilfred" is about to end, and it ends tonight.  This is the series finale and we may be reading into things too much, but we think it might be a happy one.  The episode is entitled "Happiness" and the description of the episode (stop reading now if you don't want to know anything although we'll say that the spoiler is minor if it exists at all) simply states "Ryan finally learns the truth about Wilfred."

So, this is it.  Tune in and see how it ends.

After tonight's "Wilfred," there will only be two episodes left.  Oh, not just in the season, but in the series.  The series finale of "Wilfred" airs on August 20th and we're going to be sure to tell you about it at that time, but we would be remiss in our duties if we didn't suggest to you right here and right now that you watch as this third-to-last episode airs.  The series has some very interesting things to say, see if it offers up a new nugget tonight.

Listen, there is something we don't know if we've talked about yet, this season of "Wilfred," the show's fourth, is also its last.  This is it, the swan song, the long goodbye, the something else that means the same thing which we can't think of right now.  Tonight, we hit the halfway point in the season and that means that the end is drawing ever more near.  We don't know about you, but that makes us sad.  If only we had a pet human in a dog suit to love us.

So, last week was something of a special week for "Wilfred."  Not only did the series mark its fourth episode premiere, but it did so with back-to-back episodes.  Tonight, the show settles into regular, old, weekly single episode airings.  It is a sad fact, but it is not one that should require you to stop watching the series in general, after all, there is this man dressed in a dog suit on the show, and if that's not worth 30 minutes a week we don't know what is.

We like to refer to this show as the one about the man and the man in the dog suit, but perhaps that's unfair.  Perhaps we should refer to it as the one about the kind of unhinged man and the dog he believes to be a man in a dog suit.  After all, that description is somewhat more accurate.  What that description isn't, is any less confusing.

Season four of the awfully odd sounding series kicks off tonight and stars Elijah Wood as the man and Jason Gann as the man in the dog suit.  Do be aware that it is now on FXX instead of FX.

On tonight's episode of "Wilfred," the titular dog is going to be the subject of some scientific research.  We are told that there are going to be some "unsettling results" to the tests, and we wonder what those might be.  Could it be that they discover the dog to not be a dog but rather a man in a dog suit.  Surely that would be kind of a weird twist for the series to take, but we won't pretend like other weird things haven't already happened on the show.

We have, more than once or twice (or even thrice), this season told you to watch "Wilfred."  We have explained how the show is funny and clever and features a man in a dog suit.  Tonight is the last episode of the season which means that it's the last time we'll tell you (this season) that you ought to be watching the series.  Listen, we truly think that if you watch the show you just might enjoy yourself for 30 minutes, and if your life is anything like ours, 30 minutes of enjoyment is really not a bad thing (could it ever be a bad thing).  It has a man in a dog suit, really.

Tonight is episode 11 of the 13 episode season of "Wilfred."  That means that there is just not a whole lot of "Wilfred" left before it goes away for awhile (don't you dare say forever, we can't think that).  Oh yes, when summer ends, so will season three.  What we suggest you do with this series is the same thing you do as you realize that summer is waning -- grab it in death grip and wring every little morsel of amusement and joy out of the thing as you possibly can.  Don't squeeze too tightly as you don't want to hurt the dog, but don't let it get away either.

There is just something funny about a man in a dog suit.  Come on, quite honestly, how funny is it to see a man in a dog suit on a weekly basis?  You could probably get folks to tune in simply by having a man in a dog suit stand there for 30 minutes on every week.  However, FX isn't happy with just doing that, no, they have a man in a dog suit talking to a hobbit for 30 minutes every single Thursday night during the show's run.  How much fun is it?  Well, we wouldn't tell you on nearly a weekly basis to watch the show if it weren't so danged funny.

Last week we warned you that this week would mark the halfway point in this season of "Wilfred."  It is therefore, we feel, incumbent upon us to tell you this week that we are indeed halfway through the season.  What's more is that you should really be watching.  Have you seen the promos for the series?  Ryan dancing with Wilfred is hysterical, absolutely hysterical, but the funny doesn't just end with the previews, it continues into the actual series itself.  We honestly believe that if you sit down and watch, you're going to enjoy yourself.

Time for some math -- there are 13 episodes in this season of "Wilfred," and tonight is episode six which means that after tonight a mere seven remain.  Put another way, halfway through next week's episode we will be at the halfway point of the season.  We don't like that.  It means that time is passing too quickly, that the summer is zipping by, that the man in a dog suit season is zipping by, that before we know it, Labor Day--and the fall--will be upon us.  We will, obviously, still be watching tonight, but we're just uncomfortable with what it means... as uncomfortable as a man has to be wearing a dog suit.

There are some weird shows on television, but weird doesn't mean not worth watching.  Take this series, "Wilfred."  We bet that if you tune in for tonight's season premiere, you're going to like what you see.  On the other hand if we were to tell you that this is a comedy about a guy, let's say he's slightly unhinged but maybe he isn't, who in order to make his way in the world imagines that this dog isn't a dog as much as he's a man in a dog suit.  Yes, that's right, this guy thinks (or pretends) a dog is actually a man in a dog suit.  Anyway, if we were to tell you that, would you tune in?  Well, you should, you'll like it.

Tonight is unlucky episode 13 of the second season of "Wilfred."  Now, we don't call it unlucky simply because it's the 13th episode--we don't believe in such things--we call it unlucky because it's the last episode of the season and that is pretty unlucky.  We fully expect it o be a great episode, but the 'last episode of the season' bit does upset us.  We don't want "Wilfred" to go away, we want it to say with us forever, like a faithful dog... or a faithful dog in a man suit.  Wait, no, we have that wrong -- like a faithful man in a dog suit.  Yup, that's better.

We are, most definitely, in the home stretch for this season of "Wilfred."  Of the 13 episodes ordered (a lucky number to be sure), we have but three remaining.  Now, an effort is being made to stretch out the season a little by not airing a new episode next week, but we're not entirely sure that skipping a week alleviates the problem of having so few fresh episodes left.  There is just something about a man in a dog suit that makes us laugh, even if the man in the dog suit isn't really a man in the dog suit.  Or is he?  We get confused about reality sometimes.

There is something wonderful and wonderfully sad about this show.  It is entirely possible that the point isn't for it to be wonderfully sad, but we sometimes see it that way.  Here is this poor guy, just trying to make his way in the world, but he's constantly thwarted isn't he?  He's constantly stopped and told what to do, orders are barked at him.  Heck, he can't even cook for himself, can he?  Then, the poor guy, he's shoved into this dog suit and everyone thinks that he's just a plain dog except for one other dude.  Man, we feel bad for Wilfred.  Can't someone throw him a bone?

We referred to this show as a 'man be dog' world, but perhaps it's a 'dog be man' thing, honestly we're not quite sure what the best way to put it might be.  What we do know is this -- in the televisual summer, a time when we're all groping for comedy that is meant to be funny as opposed to the unintentional comedy of some reality series, FX is giving us Thursday nights.  Thursday nights have Charlie Sheen and Louis C.K. and Russell Brand and this particular series in which your kind of sort of average individual sees a regular dog as a man in a bad dog suit.  Trust us, it's funny.

When you tell someone that there's this television show you love about this one guy who talks to this dog who talks back to him, you have to be kind of worried, right?  We mean, there's a strong sense that such a show may veer into "Mr. Ed" territory and people will look at you funny.  Well, we suggest when you talk about "Wilfred" that you mention that when the dog talks back he does so as an Australian guy wearing a ridiculous dog costume.  Trust us, we've tried the explanation on the subway and we didn't get any sort of strange looks whatsoever (in fact, we got the whole car to ourselves).

P.S. - Robin Williams is on tonight.

So you see, there's this dog who is a dog, but to his owner (or the human he spends a whole lot of time with anyway), the dog isn't a dog, the dog is man in a dog suit.  Now, if we were the owner (or the human the dog spent a lot of time with), we would spend our whole life in therapy trying to make the dog just look like a dog again.  We wouldn't care what it would take, we would do everything in our power to make it happen.  We're happy though that the dog here still looks like a man, because it makes for an awfully good TV show, the season finale of which airs tonight.

Listen, we have our sources, and our sources tell us that "Wilfred" is a pretty good show and most definitely worth watching not just in general, but this week specifically.  Right now you're probably asking us why exactly this is, but the truth is that we're not going to tell you, we're just going to suggest that you watch.  We are happy to tell you this much about the show -- it's going to have something to do with this guy and his dog who looks like a human to the guy, but to no one else.  Of course, that's not really giving anything away, that's what the whole series is about.
