Does "Under the Dome" count as a phenomenon? What, precisely, is the criteria for determining that which is a phenomenon? Certainly, "Under the Dome" performed admirably during its first season, showing that the summer need not be a vast wasteland devoid of scripted programming in its entirety. It intrigued audiences and was renewed for a second season, a second season which began last week. Tonight, after the whiz-bang get-you-back-into-the-swing-of-things return, "Under the Dome" settles into a regular routine tonight, as much as any show featuring a town of individuals under a dome can be settled into a routine.

It may have initially been referred to as a "limited run series" or a "miniseries" or something else along those lines, but we can tell you this, "Under the Dome" is going to be back next summer. This means that any shocking revelations which occur today, any amazing goodness knows what that happens, and any dome-removing finales will be dealt with down the line. We aren't suggesting the dome will be removed tonight, but if it is and all the people get happy, imagine just how sad they're all going to be come next summer when it drops again. Oh the humanity.

What happens when a town is cut off from the world via an invisible dome? That is what this miniseries attempts to ask. Okay, maybe it's not a miniseries. Maybe the show will do well enough in the ratings over the course of these 13 episodes that it will come back next season. We aren't going to place any bets on that. Why? Because, quite frankly, we're concerned that if we do and we bet wrongly everyone will get so angry at us that they'll place us within an invisible dome and watch us live out the rest of our days. We don't want that even if we do want to watch the people on this series do just that. Probably you should watch too, perhaps we'll get answers and plot advancement tonight.
