True Blood

Jul 26, 2009 09:00 PM

TV Network - HBO

This Sunday's episode of "True Blood" is titled "Friend Is a Four Letter Word." Since that title is entirely factually inaccurate, we'll leave it to HBO to describe the episode (spoilers included, obviously): "Accompanied by Isabel’s human boyfriend Hugo, Sookie embarks on a dangerous mission to locate Godric. Meanwhile, Bill is shocked when a vampire from his distant, more violent past resurfaces in Dallas. In Bon Temps, Daphne presses Sam to get comfortable in his own skin(s); Hoyt continues his unlikely courtship of Jessica; and Tara and Eggs take a detour while on a road trip for supplies. At the Light of Day camp, Jason finds himself faced with difficult emotional and physical choices."

We don't necessarily think that "True Blood" has reinvented itself through the years, but unquestionably it has progressed and changed in different--and at times unpredictable--ways.  Where will things end tonight?  Will we lose friends?  Lose enemies?  Will will find ourselves a few vampires short of a full deck?  We simply don't know.  Oh sure, last week may have set things up for this week, but vampires are tricky and sometimes they lead you in one direction only to flip the script at the last minute.

What will the new season of "True Blood" bring?  Yes, we can expect vampires.  Yes, we can expect all other manner of supernatural/mythological beasties.  Yes, we can expect to see people drink blood and solve mysteries and maybe die, all while the show's universe expands.  We have all seen trailers for Sookie and company's new adventures, but it really isn't until tonight's episode that we're going to have a good idea of what to expect this year (and maybe not even then).  Okay, go ahead, say it one time if it'll make you feel better... Sookie.

Have you been following "True Blood" this whole season?  We have some questions we'd like to ask about what's been going down.  Nah, we're not going to do that and we'll tell you why -- we have visisions of the future and we're not always entirely sure whether what we're seeing is real or some future event.  If we were to ask about a future event (like something that happens tonight) you'd get really, really upset.  We don't want that to happen.  So, we won't ask, just tune in tonight, watch what happens, and then get excited for whatever it is that next year will bring when the show returns.

The season finale of "True Blood" is a little bit less than a month away.  In fact, if our calculations are correct, the season finale is exactly four weeks tonight.  So, that means that, if you're like us and occasionally fall behind on a show, it's time to start catching up with "True Blood" right now so you can watch the season finale on time without having missed that which came bfore..  Yes, it's all well and good to suggest that these folks are vampires and that therefore they'll be around forever and you can just tune back in whenever you want, but if you fall behind you might never catch back up and that would be rather tragic... almost like ending up like a vampire.

We would like to provide you with some sort of recap about what's happened on the show so that new people can join and have some sort sort of a clue about it all.  For "True Blood" though that seems impossible.  We can tell you that there are vampires and faeries (and part-faeries) and all manner of man and beast running around the Deep South.  But, then again, it's "True Blood," you've probably heard about it and you ought--especially if you haven't tried it yet--to give it a chance tonight... maybe they'll do a 'previously on' at the outset.

You know the thing about vampires?  They just won't die.  It doesn't matter what you do to try to get rid of them, they always seem to come back around.  Well, even though "True Blood" is, in some sense, dying tonight, it's going to come back around next summer.  We can't promise you that each and every cast member you know and love will be back, merely that the series will be back as will many of the stars.  We suggest you suck this season finale dry, it's going to have to tide you over for a while, but there will be a whole new meal next year.

Last season on "True Blood" some stuff happened.  It wasn't necessarily what fans wanted to have happen and didn't always necessarily involve the people fans wanted to see it involve, but let's not mince words -- stuff happened.  This season on "True Blood" we fully expect more to happen.  Some of it will involve vampires, some of it will involve non-vampires, and some of it will involve both vampires and non-vampires all at the same time.  That's the kind of show "True Blood" is, and that's the kind of thing you ought to expect of the series.

No, no, you misunderstand, we're not suggesting that the show sucks, not in any way, just that vampires suck - there was a movie called that and everything this summer.  Any sort of double meaning that you garnered from the flyover description is completely and wholly inaccurate, a misread of our intent.  Yes, we could go back and change what we wrote in the flyover description, but if we did it's quite possible that others like yourself wouldn't bother to click and read what we had to say and that would defeat the purpose.

Man, the past several months have just completely bit haven't they?  No, you wouldn't say that?  How about sucked, can we agree that the past several months have sucked?  Of course, if the past several months - those without new episodes of "True Blood" - have bit (or sucked), what can we say about the next few months, the ones with new episodes?  They're going to completely bite (or suck) too, but that's a totally different kind of biting (or sucking), isn't it?  Either way, bite or suck, new episodes start tonight.

The second season of "True Blood" reaches its finale on HBO with an episode titled "Beyond Here Lies Nothin'."

Will Bon Temps rid itself of Maryann?

Will Bill and Eric come to blows?

    Will Jessica and Hoyt reunite?

Here's HBO's spoiler-ific description of the finale: "In the season two finale, the mayhem in Bon Temps reaches a fever pitch as Maryann prepares for her ultimate bestial sacrifice, conscripting Sookie to be Maid of Honor at the bloody nuptials.  Meanwhile, Sophie-Anne (guest star Evan Rachel Wood) warns Eric to keep the lid on Bill’s inquisitiveness; Jason leads Andy into the heroic abyss; and Hoyt has a hard time swallowing Maxine’s endless stream of insults.  Deliberating on what may be his final move to save Sookie and the town, Sam is forced to put his trust, and his life, in a most unlikely ally."

"True Blood" has already been renewed and will be back for a third season next summer.

Last week's second season premiere for "True Blood" drew a record 3.7 million viewers in its first airing, the most for any HBO program since the "Sopranos" finale. How can "True Blood" top that? With more Lafayette, some unfortunate bonding time for Sookie and Jessica, more creepiness at the Light of Day Leadership Conference and more shady activity from the mysterious Maryanne.
