It has been more than a year since the last new episode of "Treme" aired. We don't think that the quality of the series will have dissipated for its having been away so long, we just have kind of missed the show. We think it's the music... and the acting... and the direction... and the look... and the feel... and the stories... and the characters. Okay, fine, it's the whole thing -- "Treme" is one of those series which HBO can point to and give their 'It's not TV, it's HBO' thing and you'll understand exactly what they're talking about.

Tonight, with a 75 minute episode, "Treme" ends. It feels rather fitting, somehow, that this series about sadness and hope and change and potential and recovery and trying to do the right thing should end with the end of the year. Here we are, on December 29th, the final Sunday of the year, and we are all getting ready to close the book on 2013 and open one for 2014. Tonight, "Treme" closes its book and, once the final credits roll, you can know that it, just like the year, is over. Both the year and this tale of Post-Katrina New Orleans may have had some tough moments, but aren't we all better for both of them?

As we have told you with the other episodes of "Treme" this season, the entire show is coming to an end. HBO ordered an abbreviated fourth season, one consisting of only five episodes, to close out the series. Tonight is the fourth episode of the season, and therefore the penultimate one. Might watching it make for a slightly more melancholy Christmas? Yes, it might, but if the quality of the episode is up to the general standards set for tby the series, it may also make you exceptionally happy to have watched.

Down in the Treme there are things happening, there are stories unfolding and others being wrapped up. We don't know where this final season of "Treme" will take us, nor where it will take the characters, all we know for certain is that this is the final season, a five episode farewell to a show that has asked people to think about the world in which we live in a different way than they may have before. Tune in tonight for the second of the final five episodes.

"Treme" has been given five episodes to end the series and wrap-up whatever storylines the producers choose to wrap up. It has, at this point, actually been off the air for just over 12 months, with the last new episode having aired the Sunday after Thanksgiving in 2012. But, hopefully, the David Simon/Eric Overmyer created series returns with just as much thought and care and consideration as it exhibited in its first three seasons. It certainly hasn't always been an easy show to watch, but it has always been difficult to turn off.

We could be wrong, but to us "Treme" feels a lot like a David Simon series. It is one of those shows which so many people will talk about once it's finished, people will insist that they watched every episode and loved it, the show will enter the popular consciousness, and yet if you were to ask people during its run, most people would say they've seen an episode or two... maybe. Do not be that guy (or gal). Watch this now, watch it while it's on, watch it so that you can truly be someone who did and not someone who just will claim to have 15 years from now. Head down to the Treme tonight for this last episode of season three.

We are happy to tell you, in case you don't already know, that "Treme" has been renewed for a third season. That means that this excellent tale of a city and the characters who reside in it is going to continue on into the future. What the show does so superbly is to give the flavor not just of Bourbon Street (even though there's pride on Bourbon Street) and the bits of New Orleans that we all know, but the city as a whole. The characters and stories the show tells are ones we love as well, but it's the flavor of the city that comes through so loud and clear and beautifully.

As you undoubtedly remember, this series takes place in post-Katrina New Orleans and features a number of highs and lows for that city and the characters which the show follows. "Treme" is full of great music, great food, and a number of great performances as well as some hard to watch storylines. Expect more of the same from season two of the series as the 11-episode run begins tonight. Just make sure to have some beignets and coffee with you as you watch - it really enhances the experience.

HBO - they know drama. Okay, so they're not the network that states as much, but let's face it, HBO has a tendency to put good television shows on the air. This new one, "Treme," isn't the first drama to take place in the aftermath of Hurricane Katrina, but one doesn't have to be first to be the best. "Treme" comes to us from David Simon, creator of "The Wire" and "Generation Kill," and so we fully expect it to have the same sort of gritty reality that we saw in those shows.
