Top Chef

Top Chef: Seattle

TV Network - Bravo

"Top Chef" has spent the season in Seattle, and, amusingly, it hasn't been raining on our television sets the entire time.  We are not quite sure what sort of televisual magic the folks at Bravo used to make this happen, but assuredly some has been at work.  The other magic that has taken place this season has been in the pots and pans and stoves and ovens.  Seriously, the stuff the chefs have cooked up--the stuff they always cook up on the series--has looked incredible.  Tonight we'll discover which of the finalists has won the season.  Tune in to see one last bit of magic this season.

We have decidedly mixed feelings about "Top Chef" returning tonight.  On the one hand, it's completely wonderful that this series is going to be on with new episodes -- the chefs are truly impressive and the judges wonderful.  We are constantly amazed by what is produced on the series.  On the other hand, we eat when we watch the show; we simply cannot get through a quickfire challenge without popping something scrumptious into our face... and forget about what happens when they get to the main event.  "Top Chef" is great for our eyes and not so good on our waistline.

Now that it's all over but for the crying, let us take an hour and look back on the season.  Let us hear what happened that we didn't see.  Let us get the answer to the all-important question 'What in god's name were they thinking when they...'  You know that if you've been watching the season on a weekly basis that you have those sorts of questions and this episode exists, at least in part, so that we get some answers.  We aren't going to say that every answer you want is going to be given tonight, but we ought to get some of them.

People, as has been made abundantly clear not just through advertising but through actually meeting the people who live there, you don't (want to) mess with Texas.  "Top Chef" seems to have missed that message though because they're going to be in Texas for this whole season.  We greatly look forward to highfalutin versions of a 60 oz. Texas-shaped steak that we're bound to see here and the Rio Grande size bucket of ice cream with which it is served.  Well, now we've done it, now we're really and truly hungry.  Excuse us while we head down to the corral and find us some dinner.

This is it, the moment we've been waiting for since the start of the eighth season of "Top Chef" began not so long ago, because this is the moment where everything wraps up.  It's not that we don't like "Top Chef," on the contrary we quite enjoy it.  No, it's just that it's the nature of the reality show beast - you're always dying to see exactly how it all ends.  Now tomorrow, after it's all over, we're going to miss having new episodes of "Top Chef," (while reunions are great, they're not exactly the same thing) but tonight we're going to be all excited to see exactly how it ends.

Last week we were left with a fabulous cliffhanger question - who would win the title of 'Top Chef' on "Top Chef."  That answer will be forthcoming tonight as the second part of the season finale airs.  Padma Lakshmi, Tom Colicchio, and the rest of the judges will all be present as our finalists battle it out for the title which some may argue is deserved by all.  Our world, however, doesn't work that way.  The title must be awarded, and the losers must go home without it.  They may have their dignity intact, they may have the respect of their peers, but they will not be called 'Top Chef.'  Perhaps they'll forever more be known as 'Almost Top Chef.'
