TV Network - AMC

There is a showdown coming.  There is a moment of truth that is going to be faced.  Rick and The Governor -- neither can live while the other survives.  Two men enter, one man leaves.  We're going to need a bigger boat.  Okay, that last one didn't work, but you get the point -- there is an epic showdown coming, something like the one between Superman and Nuclear Man.  Well, maybe better than that.  Don't expect the showdown to happen tonight, the back half of season three is just starting, but do expect, eventually, for us to get there.

We do not know, in precise terms, what will happen tonight.  But, we're going to hypothesize.  We hypothesize that right before the end credits begin, something amazing and astounding will take place.  There will be a moment, right before those end credits, that will make us want to kill to know what's next.  We will, of course, not get an answer tonight because it will be a cliffhanger ending.  We won't know for months what's next.  At least, that's what we hypothesize, for tonight is the mid-season finale.

Sadly, next week, right after our feast of Thanksgiving, our feast of zombies will end for a few months.  Next week, we hit the mid-season finale of "The Walking Dead."  Or, perhaps we're supposed to call it the "fall finale" or "winter finale."  The upshot is this -- this week's episode, the penultimate of the half-season, is going to setup next week's episode and if you want to know what's going on next week when you tune in, you have to watch tonight.

It is always our hope that "The Walking Dead" will go extra-scary on Halloween weekend.  They should, right?  We don't know if they will tonight, but we do know that the series is aware of the holiday.  You will recall that they launched the first season on Halloween back in 2010, that wasn't an accident.  Zombies just feel like a perfect fit with the holiday.  Keep those fingers crossed and hope for extra thrills and chills tonight.

Here is how we see things -- the first episode of "The Walking Dead" season had to get the characters out of the predicament in which they found themselves at the end of the last season.  What it didn't do was tell us anything concrete about where this season may be headed (outside of, maybe, going to DC, but that is, as stated a maybe).  Tonight ought to provide that look, it ought to show us just what we're in for until the mid-season finale arrives.  We have our fingers crossd that it will be interesting, and you should as well, they perhaps haven't always opted for the most interesting of choices.

The country loves "The Walking Dead."  Seriously, the show is hugely popular.  Tonight, we get to see if that popularity continues as season five commences (we expect many of you will watch).  Season four ended, as you may remember, with members of our band arriving at Terminus only to find, as viewers certainly suspected, that Terminus wasn't really the bright shining beacon which it pretended to be.  Now, if you'll forgive our ending that last sentence with a preposition, we'd like to end our synopsis with a proposal -- watch tonight and tell us tomorrow what you thought of the season premiere.

The Walking Dead: Season 4 - DVD

    Aug 26, 2014

In this highly anticipated new season, we see Rick and the group of survivors fostering a thriving community in the safe haven of the prison. Sadly, in this brutal world, happiness is short-lived and walkers and outside threats are no match for danger brewing inside the fences. The group’s home and new way of life will be thoroughly tested, and their struggle to survive has never been so perilous. Season 4 also introduces several new characters including Bob Stookey (Lawrence Gilliard Jr., "The Wire").

Inside the Walking Dead: Walker University

    Jul 15, 2014

    TV Network - AMC

Last week we got an "Inside the Walking Dead" special, and tonight we're getting the same, only different.  Tonight's special is actually subtitled "Walker University" and, presumably, will give us an inside look at how they make the dead the dead.  What the rules are for movement, talking, biting necks, etc., etc.  We could all learn a trick or two, we think, about such things.  After all, Halloween is right around the corner.

"Walking Dead" has hurtled here, to its season finale.  We have heard talk of causes of the zombie plague.  We have heard discussion about what the future might bring.  We have been treated to both hope and to tragedy this season and we expect that tonight's episode is going to feature both of these things once more.  We expect there to be blood and guts and upset and intimations of what the next season may bring.  We shall keep our fingers crossed that our favorite characters will live, but we won't be surprised if they don't.

You might feel as though "The Walking Dead" just came back, and even if it did, the season still ends this month.  Is that sad?  Yes, it's sad, but it isn't as sad as the knowledge that the person you've loved for the last 50 years of your life died but has come back to life with no greater desire than to consume your flesh.  Perspective.  That's what we're talking about -- putting things into perspective.  Watch tonight's episode of "The Walking Dead" and see if the folks on the series can do that or if they've lost all sense of what it means to be human.

It won't be too long--seriously, it is going to happen on March 30th--until the season ends, but a lot can happen between then and now.  The only thing of which we're relatively certain on "Walking Dead," is that Rick will be around through the season finale.  But, that being said, if you gave us good odds, we might still place a bet on his going down.  Isn't that one of the things that makes "The Walking Dead" so good -- anyone can die at any time, they are not shy about killing characters and just because something happened in the comics doesn't mean it'll go down here.

Let us forget about any unevenness that may have existed (or not) with the first half of the fourth season.  Instead, let us be thankful that it seems as though the show will be heading in a new direction with this episode, a direction which will, perhaps, bring our favorite band of intrepid survivors face-to-face with new evils, new trials, and maybe a girl named Clementine.  Okay, that last bit will almost assuredly not take place, but wouldn't it be pretty cool if it did?

At some point next year, "The Walking Dead" will return and will finish up its fourth season.  We don't, exactly, know when that is going to take place, but we know it will happen.  What we do know is that tonight is the mid-season finale and the last time we'll see our intrepid not-yet-dead-but-definitely-infected heroes for the time being.  We fully expect there to be a cliffhanger ending and much watercooler discussion tomorrow.  There are certain people we'd rather see not die tonight, and we're hoping that the producers have heard our prayers.

The current plan for season four of "The Walking Dead" seems to be to split it into two halves, each consisting of eight episodes.  Tonight is episode five which means we're hitting the second half of this run of episodes tonight.  Put another way, imagine a zombie coming at you -- a full zombie.  You take your machete and slice the zombie perfectly down the middle, vertically.  One half of the zombie falls down, the other half remains standing.  The half on the ground are the episodes behind us, the standing half are the episodes that remain in this run.

Forget the storylines and the characters that make "Walking Dead" so good.  Strip it down to its essentials and what you're left with is a group of people living a nightmare, an horrific nightmare, on a daily basis.  For them, every day is Halloween come to life.  The series/network have acknowledged Halloween in the past.  The series premiere was in fact on Halloween in 2010.  With the holiday approaching this year, can we expect an added dose of terror tonight?  We don't imagine the characters will dress up, but maybe someone will jump out and say "boo."  Or, you know, maybe there will be zombies.

One gets the feeling that DVRs are going to be pulling double-duty tonight with the season finale of "The Walking Dead" and the season premiere of "Game of Thrones" airing at the same time.  Both this series and the HBO ones are, quite obviously, huge hits for their respective networks and have quite the (overlapping?) fanbases.  Keep in mind that this is the finale episode which Glen Mazzara handled as the showrunner (he guided the series for seasons two and three).  Will Mazarra's last episode end with a bang?  Knowing the series, we have to expect that it will.

The dead live.  We are sorry to have to be the ones to tell you this, but the dead live.  They walk amongst us--no inserting jokes about old Hollywood movie stars--they feed off of us; they are in our hearts, our minds, and our souls.  And, better than that, they're on our TV screens.  "The Walking Dead" is going with a new episode tonight despite anything that may be airing on any other channel.  Why?  Because the zombies are out there and have to be stopped; a cure may be out there and has to be found; Rick is out there and we need to stand by him.

There are certain things in this world which we can all expect with some degree of certainty.  Chief amongst these is that the world will continue spinning around the sun for some time to come.  Just a smidge behind that is that without coffee we're going to have a terribly, awful, no good, very bad day.  And, somewhere behind that is that there are going to be zombies or be zombies talked about on "The Walking Dead."  Don't just take our word for it though, tune in tonight and see if the zombie menace continues to threaten the population or if Rick has, single-handedly managed to restore the nation to its former glory.  If he has, we promise to avoid all caffeine tomorrow.

This has been something of a different season for "The Walking Dead," hasn't it (don't make any jokes about it being of much more even quality)?  With the group being split and breaking into a prison and dealing with the governor and learning zombies could be used as zombie repellent... different.  You know what hasn't changed on the show?  The dead still walk the Earth.  Yeah, that part of "The Walking Dead" isn't going anywhere (it's right there in the title, people), but the show itself will be disappearing for a while -- the first half of season three ends tonight.

If you have read the graphic novels, the revelations at the end of season two weren't necessarily all that new.  However, if you're like us and haven't read the graphic novels... holy mackerel, are you kidding us?  We may not have loved everything that happened during season two, but my goodness that was quite the finale.  We would tell you all about it, but then you'd probably kill us and we'd end up turning into a zombie.  We don't want that.  Will the show opt to keep the season two finale momentum going for all 16 third season episodes?  Well, probably it'll keep going tonight anyway (an eight episode run is starting) and, for the moment, that's really the important thing, isn't it?

We will say it, we don't mind saying it -- this season hasn't quite always been as even as everyone would have wanted it to be.  Don't get us wrong, we're not complaining at all about anything, as long as the dead walk the earth, we're simply happy to be alive.  We won't be questioning plot points or sticking around a farm too long or character development.  There are many out there who are hoping that tonight's season ends with our heroes heading off in a new direction with a new endgame.  Only watching the finale unfold (or reading about it later) will reveal whether that wish will be fulfilled.

We would very much like to make a series of jokes relating Hollywood celebrities with zombies.  The problem with that is that the jokes are just too easy, aren't they?  And--and don't think that this doesn't bother us--oh so many of those jokes would be exceedingly mean.  There is a whole series of jokes about mindless people following following anything that glitters and willing to eat their own to get it, kind of like the undead who choose to walk the Earth.  See?  We don't want to make those jokes, we just want you to know that if you're not into the Oscars, there is an alternative tonight.

When we last left our intrepid band of survivors they were at a farmhouse which, at least at one point, had a barn with a whole bunch of undead in it.  Listen, we're not going to spoil the end of the midseason finale if you haven't seen it, but you really do need to catch up because the series is returning tonight with new episodes and you're going to want to watch them as they air rather than to remain so far behind.  The dead can catch you if you're that far behind, and once they catch you they feast on your brains.  We ask, do you really want that to happen?  There's safety in numbers, stick with the group.

Last year we got an incredibly short first season of "The Walking Dead," and we don't want you to instantly assume that with this run of episodes ending after a mere seven that we're getting another short outing.  The second season of "The Walking Dead" is in fact 13 episodes long (good number for a show about zombies), but it's being split in half (which is kind of like having its head lopped off).  That first half ends tonight, and we believe the next half starts in mid-February (all the better to Sweeps you with).  That's a long time to go through life with nothing to live for, but it's not like we're going to have to roam the Earth until the end of days without hope.
