How can you not be excited for this one? This is the series premiere of AMC's new show based on the Robert Kirkman comic and it's airing on Halloween. What better way is there to spend your ridiculous sugar high than getting completely and totally freaked out about a zombie attack. You can also look at this show as something of a tutorial - we all know that the zombie apocalypse is coming so hopefully by watching this you can learn the right and wrong way to go about saving your life and the lives of those you love.

One gets the feeling that DVRs are going to be pulling double-duty tonight with the season finale of "The Walking Dead" and the season premiere of "Game of Thrones" airing at the same time. Both this series and the HBO ones are, quite obviously, huge hits for their respective networks and have quite the (overlapping?) fanbases. Keep in mind that this is the finale episode which Glen Mazzara handled as the showrunner (he guided the series for seasons two and three). Will Mazarra's last episode end with a bang? Knowing the series, we have to expect that it will.

The dead live. We are sorry to have to be the ones to tell you this, but the dead live. They walk amongst us--no inserting jokes about old Hollywood movie stars--they feed off of us; they are in our hearts, our minds, and our souls. And, better than that, they're on our TV screens. "The Walking Dead" is going with a new episode tonight despite anything that may be airing on any other channel. Why? Because the zombies are out there and have to be stopped; a cure may be out there and has to be found; Rick is out there and we need to stand by him.

There are certain things in this world which we can all expect with some degree of certainty. Chief amongst these is that the world will continue spinning around the sun for some time to come. Just a smidge behind that is that without coffee we're going to have a terribly, awful, no good, very bad day. And, somewhere behind that is that there are going to be zombies or be zombies talked about on "The Walking Dead." Don't just take our word for it though, tune in tonight and see if the zombie menace continues to threaten the population or if Rick has, single-handedly managed to restore the nation to its former glory. If he has, we promise to avoid all caffeine tomorrow.

There is a showdown coming. There is a moment of truth that is going to be faced. Rick and The Governor -- neither can live while the other survives. Two men enter, one man leaves. We're going to need a bigger boat. Okay, that last one didn't work, but you get the point -- there is an epic showdown coming, something like the one between Superman and Nuclear Man. Well, maybe better than that. Don't expect the showdown to happen tonight, the back half of season three is just starting, but do expect, eventually, for us to get there.

This has been something of a different season for "The Walking Dead," hasn't it (don't make any jokes about it being of much more even quality)? With the group being split and breaking into a prison and dealing with the governor and learning zombies could be used as zombie repellent... different. You know what hasn't changed on the show? The dead still walk the Earth. Yeah, that part of "The Walking Dead" isn't going anywhere (it's right there in the title, people), but the show itself will be disappearing for a while -- the first half of season three ends tonight.

If you have read the graphic novels, the revelations at the end of season two weren't necessarily all that new. However, if you're like us and haven't read the graphic novels... holy mackerel, are you kidding us? We may not have loved everything that happened during season two, but my goodness that was quite the finale. We would tell you all about it, but then you'd probably kill us and we'd end up turning into a zombie. We don't want that. Will the show opt to keep the season two finale momentum going for all 16 third season episodes? Well, probably it'll keep going tonight anyway (an eight episode run is starting) and, for the moment, that's really the important thing, isn't it?

We will say it, we don't mind saying it -- this season hasn't quite always been as even as everyone would have wanted it to be. Don't get us wrong, we're not complaining at all about anything, as long as the dead walk the earth, we're simply happy to be alive. We won't be questioning plot points or sticking around a farm too long or character development. There are many out there who are hoping that tonight's season ends with our heroes heading off in a new direction with a new endgame. Only watching the finale unfold (or reading about it later) will reveal whether that wish will be fulfilled.

We would very much like to make a series of jokes relating Hollywood celebrities with zombies. The problem with that is that the jokes are just too easy, aren't they? And--and don't think that this doesn't bother us--oh so many of those jokes would be exceedingly mean. There is a whole series of jokes about mindless people following following anything that glitters and willing to eat their own to get it, kind of like the undead who choose to walk the Earth. See? We don't want to make those jokes, we just want you to know that if you're not into the Oscars, there is an alternative tonight.

When we last left our intrepid band of survivors they were at a farmhouse which, at least at one point, had a barn with a whole bunch of undead in it. Listen, we're not going to spoil the end of the midseason finale if you haven't seen it, but you really do need to catch up because the series is returning tonight with new episodes and you're going to want to watch them as they air rather than to remain so far behind. The dead can catch you if you're that far behind, and once they catch you they feast on your brains. We ask, do you really want that to happen? There's safety in numbers, stick with the group.

The Walking Dead

Last year we got an incredibly short first season of "The Walking Dead," and we don't want you to instantly assume that with this run of episodes ending after a mere seven that we're getting another short outing. The second season of "The Walking Dead" is in fact 13 episodes long (good number for a show about zombies), but it's being split in half (which is kind of like having its head lopped off). That first half ends tonight, and we believe the next half starts in mid-February (all the better to Sweeps you with). That's a long time to go through life with nothing to live for, but it's not like we're going to have to roam the Earth until the end of days without hope.

The Walking Dead
Oct 16, 2011
After a rollicking, wonderful, and occasionally terrifying season one, "The Walking Dead" is back for all new thrills, chills, and dead-but-still-out-for-brains baddies. Will the small band of survivors find a place where they can be safe? Will they find a cure to the zombie menace? And, perhaps most importantly, which of their own people will find themselves zombified before the season draws to a close? In season one, "The Walking Dead" pulled no punches, we don't expect that it will for season two either.

Wow, who knew the zombie apocalypse could be quite so great? Yes, we've seen great zombie apocalypses before, but "The Walking Dead" zombie apocalypse is a zombie apocalypse to remember for some time to come. We just can't believe that the first season is ending tonight, especially after it just started looking like we were going to get some answers (finally). Thinking of what those answers might be would terrify us if we hadn't already filled our fear meter with the thought of a zombie noshing on our arm. Tune in tonight and then don't forget that season two will (eventually) be coming.
