We know we shouldn't, we know that we have been told not to, but we can't help it -- we're totally having a cow, man! This is episode 500 of the ridiculously long-running animated comedy. The show has, understandably, morphed and changed through the years, but it still somehow manages to put out a whole lot of funny over the course of the season. We have to believe that tonight, for episode 500, we're going to be treated to something really and truly special... you know, like Homer creating an invention and then screwing it all up, or Bart getting in trouble at school, or Marge deciding she wants more in life than to just be a mom.

If you are at all like us, you spent almost two weeks at the end of the summer watching every "Simpsons" ever. Well, as of tonight, that marathon would have to use a different slogan--almost every "Simpsons" ever--and that's because tonight, FOX is going to start airing episodes from the series' 26th season, and FXX only offered up the first 25. The family Simpson is still going strong, their adventures are still outlandish, and we ought to be in for a whole new season of fun.

Well, here we are. You have almost assuredly seen at least one promo that this is happening, and today, at 10am eastern time, the FXX marathon of every "Simpsons" episode begins. We would be mildly surprised if you had somehow managed to miss every single episode of "The Simpsons" through the years but we'd be far more shocked if you'd seen them all. However, maybe, if you have the fortitude, a few days from now you'll be able to proudly announce that you have every single "Simpsons" episode under your belt.

We look forward to a moment in 2039 when we can, with crotchety, old, arthritic fingers, tell you that "The Simpsons" is ending its 50th season. Tonight we can tell you that the show is halfway there, ending season 25. Now, even if that is only halfway, it is still a pretty amazing feat and the fact that the series manages to still generate laughs is better still. We fully encourage you to watch tonight and see how this season ends (probably it will be with the credits).

Everybody loves Lego. Look at the popularity of the videogames. Look at the popularity of the movie, and the anticipation of the sequel. Look at the fact that The Simpsons are going Lego tonight on "The Simpsons." It is our sincere hope that you have seen the promos at this point, because, wow, it looks potentially hysterical. Completely, potentially, hysterical (we especially like Wiggum's police helicopter bit). Plus, tonight is episode 550 of the series. And, now we feel old.
Jan 26, 2014TV Network - FOX
Tonight, "The Simpsons" are new. We tell you this because with all the repeats running around with the show being 25 years old and all, you may not realize that tonight is new, but it is. We also feel like we have to tell you that just because it's new, that doesn't mean that Lisa won't act holier than thou, that Marge won't realize she wants more from life, that Bart won't act out, and that Homer won't achieve new levels of stupidity. In fact, we fully expect one or more of these things to happen, and we expect it because why would they mess with success at this point?

It never fails -- when we think of "The Simpsons," we feel old. The series has been running for a ridiculous number of years and the annual Halloween special, which didn't begin with the first year of "The Simpsons," is hitting 24 this year. 24. There are the same number of "Treehouse of Horror" episodes as there are hours in Jack Bauer's day. Marvel at that, and while you're marveling, tune in, because the "Treehouse of Horror" is always special.

"The Simpsons" will be back in the fall with brand new episodes and that makes us happy in a way that an animated television series probably shouldn't make us happy. But, enough about the tingly feeling we get when we hear that "The Simpsons" are going to give us an hour of goodness tonight and then be back again next season, tell us about how it makes you feel? Do you too get that shiny sense in your belly too, or is it more in your toes? Is it like the way Homer feels when he hears the sound of a Duff opening or like Lisa feels when she hears the soothing sounds of a saxophone? We want to hear your story.

There will come a time in the distant future when your grandkids' grandkids will think to themselves 'Holy cow, I'm now a great grandparent and somehow "The Simpsons" are still on television.' We can't even do the math for what season of the show that might be, but we do know that it will be significantly past the century mark. And, better than that, the show will still be funny and culturally relevant (at least from time to time). Tune in tonight for the series' triumphant return from their holiday break and help "The Simpsons" edge ever closer to season 176.

Do you remember that show "The Office." No, no, it's still on the air (this is it's last season), we were more afraid you'd forgotten about it because that Steve Carell fellow is no longer on and, it seems, that when he left many of you tuned out. Well, Carell is returning to television tonight. Or, at the very least, his voice is returning as "The Simpsons" is an animated show so to say that he would be on wouldn't be entirely accurate. But, don't let that upset you, tune in tonight and listen to his melodious voice as an animated character wielding it crosses your screen.

We at this point have no idea what season number this is for "The Simpsons." Yes, we could certainly look it up and get an answer pretty easily, but we prefer to believe that this is season eighteen million five hundred thousand and forty-two. Are we overestimating slightly? Maybe, but no more than Homer overestimates when he devises any of his ridiculous get rich quick schemes. As for the reason behind our overestimation? Probably that 12th Flaming Homer was a mistake (the fire makes it good).

Lisa attempts to become more popular by ghostwriting things about her on the school blog, but her plan backfires; a psychic force tells Lady Gaga that Lisa needs help, and Lisa learns that being yourself is better than being anyone else.

Already renewed through the end of the season after next season, "The Simpsons" are finishing their 23rd year tonight. With a guaranteed run of at least 25 seasons and 559 episodes, the show is going to be the longest-running scripted show in the history of television. Hopefully they live up to that tonight and bring some pretty good joke, or at the very least, some pretty old ones -- the kind that have been the longest-running gags in the history of television. Krusty will know which those are, they should as him.

Jeremy Irons has had a long and distinguished career. He has played good guys, he has played bad guys, and he's played rather ambiguous folks as well. He can do accents, he can do no accents, he can do just about anything you ask of him and in fact, has. Tonight though, we believe, Jeremy Irons will be entering new territory in his career, for tonight Jeremy Irons is voicing a bar rag. Our friendly bartender Moe has, it seems, a favorite bar rag, and said bar rag will be narrating tonight's tale. We can't wait to find out if the bar rag has a British accent.

Neil Gaiman's role on tonight's episode of "The Simpsons" will be playing Neil Gaiman, whereas Andy Garcia will be playing a book publisher after Homer forms a team to write a tween novel. We are so hoping that there are sparkly vampires in the book. But, it's Homer, so it'll probably be be sparkly elves or sparkly dwarves. We are sure that Gaiman will lead Homer in the right direction (he does provide his expertise to the team). Watch and see how Homer destroys the book industry (which, pretty much, is the inevitable result).

Any time we want to feel old all we have to do is look at "The Simpsons" and see what episode number it is, and on Halloween we feel even worse because we can't convince ourselves that they do more than one 'Treehouse of Horror' a year. To know that this is the 22nd 'Treehouse of Horror' is to know that we're old. Will this year's episode in any way approximate in quality the one where Homer goes 3D? the odds are that it won't, but with a story called 'The Diving Bell and Butterball' we're not sure how you can skip watching. We certainly can't.

Perhaps astoundingly, and despite having been on the air for decades, "The Simpsons" remains an awfully good time. The show has, unquestionably, had similar stories play out over and over again, but usually they're still smart enough to have Comic Book Guy pop-up and inform us that the writers are cheating. What can we all expect from a new season of the series? We would place money on Homer being stupid, Bart getting in trouble, Lisa trying to figure out where she belongs, and Marge growing dissatisfied with her role as a housewife. Plus there's that Edna and Ned thing. But, that's just a shot in the dark.

"The Simpsons" have managed to reach the end of their 22nd season as a standalone television series. The show has been renewed for season 23 and there is little reason to think that it won't continue beyond that as well. Can you imagine what the series would be like today if the producers had made Bart, Lisa, and Maggie age? Obviously Bart would still be in third grade, but Lisa would be finished with her doctorate by now and Maggie might actually be speaking! Wow, good call on the show's part to not have them get older.

Through the years we've watched more than one episode of "The Simpsons" where we've looked at our significant other and said 'What are they possibly smoking to come up with something like that?' Tonight we may just get the answer as Cheech and Chong are dropping by the show as a part of their reunion tour. Homer will, of course, ruin things (at least temporarily), but the salient point is that Cheech and Chong are going to be on "The Simpsons." Stick that in your pipe and smoke it.

Tonight on "The Simpsons" Bart will create a comic book which gets turned into a movie and which wins a whole boatload of awards (this is awards season after all). The film/comic book in question is entitled "Angry Dad," and we'll give you one guess whom the entire thing is almost certainly based on and whom takes the credit for it all. Right, Marge. Kidding, just kidding. But we're not kidding when we tell you that due to the Hollywood nature of the tale there are going to be a whole bunch of Hollywood folks in the episode.

Maybe it's not terribly surprising that over the course of the decades that "The Simpsons" has been on for they have managed to get innumerable guest stars, but we're still kind of surprised by the names they get. They've had A-list celebrities and huge bands and various other persons of note. Tonight they're taking that third route, with vocal appearances by James Lipton and David Mamet. The show always manage to work in their guests in interesting ways and we're looking forward to seeing how Lipton and Mamet are used tonight.

Do you realize that if the Treehouse of Horror was a kid, as of tonight the Treehouse of Horror would be old enough to drink. That's right, tonight is the 21st Treehouse of Horror episode. That's astounding. That's stupendous. That's also more than a little bit mindboggling. Twenty one Halloween-themed "Simpsons" episodes. Do you know how many series never get to 21 episodes at all much less 21 Halloweeen episodes? And, what's really fantastic is that these episodes are still funny. Just watch if you don't believe us. Plus, Daniel Radcliffe will be on.

If statisticians were like rock stars, Bill James could be The Beatles. If statisticians were like Olympian gods... wait, stop it, just forget that. Statisticians are like statisticians, not like gods, not like rock stars, and not like baseball players. Bill James could be the man among statisticians, but he's not a baseball player. Mike Scioscia however is like a baseball player and he's going to be on as well. So, pretty much you've got your baseball great and your statistician great tonight. We think it's going to be just great.

We're not going to argue against change, change has its place in this world. In fact, there's all sort of good change. There's stuff like loose change, a change of clothes when you're dirty, and changing your pitcher when it turns out that he tosses nothing but meatballs. What we do not approve of is change for the sake of change, that's just unacceptable, and we think FOX understands as much. How else would it be possible for "The Simpsons" to remain on for so many years(and it's still be consistently funny)? The new season starts tonight, so get ready to yuck.

This kind of reminds us of a game show we once saw. After tonight "The Simpsons" will have a full 21 seasons under their belt. We keep wanting some guy to yell out 'you have 21,' just like they did on that show back in the day. What was it called? It was hosted by Maury Povich, featured two contestants answering a whole bunch of questions for different amounts of points with the goal being to get to 21 total points. They even made a movie out of it at some point... "Blackjack" that's it!

The Simpsons are going to the Holy Land! Now, how exactly is it that The Simpsons have managed to travel all over the world? They claim to have no money and yet have been to everywhere from America Jr. to Australia to France to Japan. And now where are they going? They're going to Jerusalem. We're not sure what sort of shenanigans will lead them to taking that trip, but we will note that we're jealous. At least they're going to have to suffer through a tour given by Sacha Baron Cohen's character - that's the kind of thing that'll be funny to watch but not to live through.
Jan 31, 2010TV Network - FOX
Do you hear Jerusalem bells a ringing? Roman Cavalry choirs singing? That could be because Chris Martin is going to be portraying Chris Martin tonight on "The Simpsons." We are not actually trying to suggest that he'll be singing "Viva la Vida" tonight, only that Bart and Homer will be seeing Coldplay live in concert (but in animated, yellow, four-finger form). Also, we postulate that the song may be about Homer because he repeatedly rules the world only to find that his castles stand upon pillars of salt and pillars of sand.

Seriously, like them, dislike them, think their best days are in the past or that they're yet to come, as of tonight "The Simpsons" has aired 450 episodes. 450. That is an astounding number, a ridiculous number, a ludicrous number, the kind of number you get when you're on television for 20 years (also a pretty good number) While we won't reveal everything about tonight's episode, we can tell you that Anne Hathaway provides a guest voice and that the producers are going back to the well, using the ever-popular "Bart saves Krusty from problem X" storyline. In this case, "X" is Hathaway's Princess Penelope.

Lisa Simpson - book smart know-it-all or would-be Wiccan? Surely Lisa can be both, right? Lisa goes into the woods tonight and meets three very nice-seeming Wiccans including Cassandra (Neve Campbell). Just as she is about to join their group, they get arrested and Lisa becomes the star witness at their trial. Has Chief Wiggum gone too far? Will Lisa turn in her almost friends or will she decide, for some moralistic reason, that she simply cannot do it? Perhaps Neve's charms will win her over, just like they won us over so many years ago.

Are we the only ones just loving "The Simpsons" in HD? Everything is so pure and clean and yellow!
Titled "In the Name of the Grandfather," Sunday's (March 22) new "The Simpsons" finds the family traveling to Ireland and opening a pub.
Colm Meaney ("Star Trek: Deep Space Nine"), Kathy Ireland and Glen Hansard and Marketa Irglova ("Once") make guest appearances.
