The Secret Life of the American Teenager

Hey look, it's that girl from "The Descendants," you know, the one who plays Clooney's daughter, the one who is dating that moron, the older girl. We actually knew her from this series long before she had any ideas about being in a movie opposite Clooney. We got in on the ground floor of "Secret Life" before all the kids on the show went totally and completely off the rails, when it was only Shailene Woodley's character (she's the one from "The Descendants") who had lost her damn mind. We definitely recommend you tune in tonight as the series stars up again, it's totally worth watching.

ABC Family has already announced that the final season (or half season or whatever, we're totally confused about how they count things) will be starting in March of next year. At that point we'll be getting the final 12 episodes of the series... ever. That makes this something of a bittersweet holiday episode, doesn't it? In all honesty, it's probably true that every episode of "Secret Life" is a bittersweet episode, but it's more so tonight. Watch as the gang celebrates the season with, just maybe, a Christmas miracle.

We can't say that we quite understand the way this show breaks up its seasons, but we'll try to explain to you what happens even if we don't know why. "Secret Life" has a tendency to start a season over the summer and then return to finish the season the next spring. This back half of the season tends to lead right in (like the next week) to the whole new season. We don't get it, but we do love the series, and if you watch you probably do too. Plus, if you watch, you are able to tell everyone who loved "The Descendants" that you knew Shailene Woodley way back when.

We don't understand the way this series works. The show will be back next week with brand new episodes, but those will be season five brand new episodes. Tonight is, most definitely, the final episode of season four and usually one doesn't get to see two seasons quite so close together. We are hoping it means major cliffhangers (can you say 'drama') and perhaps even the departure of a character or two. Plus, we don't even have to wait too long to get the cliffhanger's resolution because the new season starts next week.

We know, we know, you feel as though just watched the season three finale of this series as a special two-part episode last week. In fact, you feel as though you've been watching brand new episodes of this series every week for a goodly long time. We're not going to argue with you. We're not going to suggest that you're anything other than 100 percent accurate. All we're going to tell you is that the beginning of season four butts up against the end of season three. Is that odd? Maybe, but that's the way they've chosen to proceed. Embrace the difference.

We would consider it an honor and a privilege if you would let us catch you up with the ridiculous amount of crazy shenanigans that have taken place on "The Secret Life of the American Teenager" so that you will be fully equipped to internalize everything that takes place tonight. Sadly though, we lost track of the insanity on this show a long time ago. Now, rather than trying to focus on who love whom and who might be pregnant now, we simply relax and let the crazy lap up onto us, like a wave on the beach -- soft, warm, and wholly comforting.

It's not that we don't like this show - we certainly wouldn't put it on our list if we didn't - it's just that we feel as though at this point, whatever secret life these teens may once have had, they no longer do. Want to not feel left behind with the series? Just go into an episode assuming that everyone has either slept with everyone else, wanted to sleep with them, and/or gotten someone pregnant or gotten pregnant themselves. You would think that after the first teenage pregnancy this particular group of friends and frenemies would have been a little bit smarter about things. We will say that it makes better TV that they aren't

There is just something about "The Secret Life of the American Teenager" that stops us from being able to turn away. We have no idea how many people on the show have gotten pregnant, how many have slept with how many others, nor the number of times that Molly Ringwald and her husband have broken up and gotten back together, but we simply cannot stop watching. Someone told us that Ben and Amy broke up which we're sure we ought to remember, but we don't buy it. They may act broken up, but they're not, are they.

Holy mackerel, how is this show only at the end of the second season? We're not complaining (exactly), but it feels like the series has been on the air forever For "Secret Life" to only be finishing season two seems really weird. Probably that's because it's one of those shows that does a long summer/fall season and then a winter/spring one which, when combined, only count as a single season episodically. Either that or it's the sheer quantity of hook-ups and failed hook-ups that happen in the show. Man, high school wasn't like this when we were attending.

This series, which initially started out as a fairly interesting and almost realistic look at what might happen when a "good girl" gets pregnant in high school at some point turned into more of a comic consideration of how crazy children and their parents are. We don't mind the comedy, we even think it moderately amusing at times, it's just not where we thought things were headed. We would try to explain to you exactly who is (or wants to be) sleeping with whom and why at this point in the series, but not only would that take tons of time, it will probably no longer be true by the end of this episode anyway.
