The Real World

It is our unabashed hope that "The Real World" never ends. You see, as it turns out, there is a never-ending supply of twentysomethings who need to stop being whatever and start getting real. We don't actually believe that this represents the real world in any way, but maybe it pushes the kids towards it in some meaningful way (as long as they don't end up in the never-ending "Challenges" after they're on the show). And, if it doesn't push them in a meaningful way, at least it's fun to watch them fight, yell, scream, kiss, and make up.

If this doesn't make you feel old, we don't know what will -- tonight, "The Real World" will begin the show's 30th season. Thirty seasons. Now, it is true that they don't run them one a year, but they don't air five during the same moment either, and that means the show has been on a long, long time. If you're like us, you pine for the days of Puck and Pedro and, if we're all lucky, this new season (again, the 30th!) will be just as compelling as that classic.

Portland, Oregon. A city famous for... well, as far as we can tell it's famous for being made fun of on "Portlandia" and the hipster sentiment associated. Well, we would never have pegged "The Real World" as a hipster show, but they're going to Portland this season. Probably the show isn't going hipster and that any and all hipster sentiments will be delivered with a certain sense of irony/utter hatred. But, perchance we're wrong, maybe the show has turned into a hipster cultural icon without us realizing it. Maybe people are starting to remember the good old days (Puck and Pedro) with fondness and are hoping for a retro season. We shall see.

Listen, we're sorry, we're going to have to call them on this one -- they're in St. Thomas. Really?!? We're calling that the real world now, are we? St. Thomas isn't the real world. We aren't saying that the season will be bad or less of a season than any other season of the show, but it's kind of like sending folks to the Caribbean to live on/near the beach and calling it real life. Wait, it's not kind of like that, it's exactly like that. It may be awesome to watch (especially if they don't GTL), but the real world it ain't.
