Kristin Cavallari is going to be playing Axl's 'hot' biology teacher.  At this point in time we'd like to tell you a story about this teacher in our high school, but probably it'd be wrong to discuss her without her permission.  Now, funnily enough, Axl tries to film Cavallari's character tonight without her permission (for a music video) which is far more wrong than our discussing this one-time English teacher.  It's not wrong enough to make us feel like telling our story would be right, but it's still more wrong.

When the entire season of a television series has dealt with it being someone's senior year of high school and they've been accepted into a college, you kind of figure that there is a graduation ceremony coming.  Tonight's season finale of "The Middle" is entitled 'The Graduation' and a decent portion of this season's stories have involved Axl's season year of high school.  So, we're going to go out on a limb and suggest that Axl may graduate from high school today.  We don't know what that'll mean for next year, just that it means funny for tonight.

Listen, Axl isn't necessarily the smartest of fellows, but his friends tend to be even worse.  Tonight, he and his Boss Co. buds will be trying to break up couples for Valentine's Day.  We aren't entirely sure why he feels like this is a good idea, but we do have some notions of where the problem might head.  As a public service message, with Valentine's Day being tomorrow, we must caution you to be careful about what you laugh at/approve of when watching in the presence of a significant other -- it might not go well.

If you watch "The Middle" on anything approaching a regular basis, you know that Norm Macdonald plays Mike's brother, and that he's something of a no good layabout (the brother, not Macdonald... although he may be as well, we couldn't say).  Well, that no good layabout is going to be back tonight.  We don't think that he'll have learned manners or how to be there for those who need him, but he will provide an additional measure of funny to this already generally funny series.  True series aficionados will also appreciate the return of Reverend TimTom tonight.

Tonight on "The Middle," they'll be celebrating Thanksgiving and, as is traditional, they'll be doing it family, Frankie's family -- Marsha Mason and Jerry Van Dyke will be returning to series.  Plus, two former Marines will be on tonight and will be portraying... Marines at Thanksgiving dinner.  We aren't entirely sure how the Marines get invited to dinner, but they do, and we're not entirely sure that they'll be happy with having been invited to a Heck Thanksgiving (we're betting the Heck's don't serve turducken), but a nice family dinner is a nice family dinner.

Brooke Shields is coming back to "The Middle" tonight, reprising her role as Rita Glossner (described in the official synopsis as 'trashy neighbor Rita Glossner').  Apparently Frankie will be accusing Rita of a hose theft tonight and then all heck will break loose (not that the Hecks don't break loose on a regular basis).  And, as if that wasn't enough, Axl will be explaining to Brick all about the birds and the bees... in detail.  Yeah, that's not going to go well, is it?  We imagine that at the conclusion of tonight's episode Brick may just decide to become a hermit.

Here, in the middle, sometimes things go long.  Sometimes you're like 'This will only take 15 minutes to get done,' but then it goes for like six hours.  We fully suspect that this episode was intended to only be 30 minutes  but then all the funny bits made it go long.  Yeah, okay, that's not at all why we're getting an hour-long super-excellent premiere of "The Middle" this week, but we're not sure the reasons matter, what matters is that the hour is coming, that we will be laughing, and that much merriment will be had.

Frankie and Mike are caught off guard when Mike's brother lists the site of the ceremony for his wedding as their house; Axl and his friends try to start their own company; Brick is mad at Mike for not letting him go to a classmate's party.

They may not get much respect, but we love the Hecks.  From Frankie and Mike to Brick, Axl, and Sue, the Hecks are hysterical, one and all.  We kind of refuse to believe that they are a wholly accurate representation of families in the middle of our country, but the lack of realism only adds to the comedic flavor.  The characters are grounded in the real world, certainly, but we don't accept that what the Hecks undergo is what all the folks in Indiana undergo.  We think fewer people would live in Indiana if the show was 100% reality.

Sue Heck regularly seems out of place in her family and with all of those around her.  We are never quite sure whether she recognizes this fact, but quite obviously it is true.  Tonight, she's going to find something of a mentor in the school's awkward guidance counselor, played by the one and only Whoopi Goldberg.  How much fun is that going to be?  Whoopi is a terribly funny woman and Sue is in need of some terribly great help, so it could be a match made in heaven, even if Whoopi is a person and Sue a character.

Sue has some issues.  She deals with them really well (sometimes) on this show, but she's definitely got issues.  Frankly, it's one of the reasons that she's a great character.  Tonight though she may go too far when she asks Mike what it is that boys want from girls.  You're an adult, you know what boys want from girls.  Mike is an adult, he knows what boys want from girls.  Sue, however, is a mere teen with blindspots and consequently doesn't know what boys want from girls.  It is almost entirely, but not wholly, outside the realm of possibility that Mike will tell her tonight and she'll dress up as a nurse for Halloween.

Here, in "The Middle," people don't follow all the fancy shmancy stuff that happens elsewhere in the country, they care about the the things the average person cares about -- football, hamburgers, and the specific varieties of food which can be deep fried (we've heard tell of deep fried butter and are quite curious to see it cooked and, maybe, try it).  That doesn't mean that the folks here don't face trials and tribulations though, they both trial and they tribulate.  Tonight, their third season of such things begin with an hour-long episode.

While we're really excited for a whole bunch of new episodes of some great sitcoms on ABC tonight, we're also kind of depressed about it.  "The Middle" is kicking off what promises to be a night of season finales.  First this will end, then later "Modern Family," and then finally "Cougar Town."  We'll be getting a whole lot of laughs tonight and it alls start with the Hecks, and that's a good thing, but the night may just end with us in tears (and that's less good).

Doris Robert is, finally, returning to "The Middle" tonight as Ms. Rinsky, Brick's math teacher.  As we recall, Rinsky and Frankie haven't gotten along so well in the past, and we fully expect that trend to continue tonight.  If we didn't know better, we'd suggest that the way these two women go at it on this show and on "Everybody Loves Raymond" might mean that Heaton and Roberts don't get along all that well in real life, but we like to think that we do know better and that they're just, you know, acting.

We're not going to lie to you - we don't live in the middle of the country.  We have driven through Indiana and found it beautiful, but we're not sure that we ever stepped out of the car as we sped through the state.  If anything could convince us however that we wanted to spend more time there, it would be knowing that Patricia Heaton and her brood on "The Middle" did in fact live there.  Those wacky Heck's know a thing or two about living in the real world and we appreciate everything they've taught us this season.

Patricia Heaton plays Frankie Heck, a loving wife and mother of three, who is middle class living in the middle of the country and approaching middle age. Clever title, right? Throw in a husband and some quirky kids and there you have it.
