The Hecks are back tonight for a whole new season of amusement in Orson, Indiana. Well, it will be amusing for us anyway even if it isn't amusing for the Hecks themselves. They struggle. They deal with the problems that we all deal with, but when they do so they tend to do so with a humorous bent, they just can't see the bent because they're in the middle of it. From the outside, we can see the bent and recognize the funny. But no, not the Hecks. They struggle.

Here, in the middle (of the week), we tend to find it nice to spend time watching funny things happen on television. Oh sure, you can find great drama and you can find fun reality, but in the middle, we like the funny. One place we find the funny in the middle is on "The Middle," which deals with a lovely family from Orson, Indiana and which operates on the premise that this is the way the world works for average folks in this nation. We don't know about that, but we do know this, it is funny and it is a good way to spend some time. Sadly, two episodes will end this fifth season of the series tonight.

In Season Four of "The Middle," the Hecks once again bring the laughs from the heartland.
Frankie (Emmy winner Patricia Heaton) continues to struggle selling cars at the only dealer left in town, but an unexpected turn of events may force her to reevaluate her career path. Meanwhile, Mike (Neil Flynn) has made it his mission to ensure sloth-like son Axl gets a football scholarship so he can get into college next year. Sue finds herself not only navigating high school, but also the Indiana roads by finally (she hopes!) getting her driver`s license. With all the crazy happenings, it`s no wonder youngest son Brick keeps his head down in a book - or whispering to himself as usual!
No matter what happens, the family brings the laughs in the ever-unique and quirky comedy.

We can't fault "The Middle" for not having a new episode last week, sometimes you just need a rest. My goodness, it's like us, we love our family and wouldn't trade them for anything. Sometimes though, we would absolutely trade them for nothing. Sometimes, like over the Christmas holiday, we think to ourselves that, my goodness, wouldn't it just be nice to go dark for a week. We imagine that's what happened last week with "The Middle," Mike and Frankie just got tired and went dark for a week. They're back this week though and Keegan-Michael Key will be putting in an appearance.

We told you back when the Halloween episode of "The Middle" aired that this series has done holiday-themed (and named) episodes exceptionally well. They, we like to think, listened to us and are going to roll out their annual Thanksgiving episode tonight. Is it a week early? Sure it is, but next Wednesday at this time you'll be screaming at your significant other about how they messed up the brining on your turducken. See? They're doing it to help you.

One of the things that has become a hallmark of this series is their annual holiday episodes. So, for instance, tonight we're getting "Halloween IV: The Ghost Story." The episode only has the title "Halloween IV" because they have already done "Halloween," "Halloween II," and "Halloween III." The same is true of Thanksgiving. What does Halloween mean for the Hecks? Well, essentially what it means for everyone else -- stressing out over costumes and candy and the occasional shaving cream/rotten egg-type bullying incident. Watch, you'll see. And, you'll laugh.

A few years back, ABC launched a new Wednesday sitcom block. Anchoring the block in the 8:00pm hour was a new series starring Patricia Heaton and Neil Flynn. Tonight, that series--which still airs at the same time--gets to episode 100. That number, 100, is impressive. Forget the historic implications about syndication (although, there is that), it means that the show has made it to its fifth season, and the odds are against that. Think about all the hurdles they had to make it past to get here. Watch and see why "The Middle" has been successful tonight.

In Season Three of The Middle, the Hecks tackle the beginning of a new school year, a not-so-relaxing Thanksgiving, and an unexpected wedding. In the midst of it all, Frankie (Emmy(R) winner Patricia Heaton) and Mike Heck (Neil Flynn) attempt to raise their kids with love and a solid Midwestern practicality. Axl, the eldest, is a jock slacker who eats the family out of house and home and walks around in his underwear. Then there's Sue, their extraordinarily ordinary teen daughter who fails at just about everything she tries with great gusto. Finally, there's Brick, their quirky fourth-grader, who reads constantly, whispers to himself and unapologetically marches to the beat of his own drummer.

When the entire season of a television series has dealt with it being someone's senior year of high school and they've been accepted into a college, you kind of figure that there is a graduation ceremony coming. Tonight's season finale of "The Middle" is entitled 'The Graduation' and a decent portion of this season's stories have involved Axl's season year of high school. So, we're going to go out on a limb and suggest that Axl may graduate from high school today. We don't know what that'll mean for next year, just that it means funny for tonight.

Listen, Axl isn't necessarily the smartest of fellows, but his friends tend to be even worse. Tonight, he and his Boss Co. buds will be trying to break up couples for Valentine's Day. We aren't entirely sure why he feels like this is a good idea, but we do have some notions of where the problem might head. As a public service message, with Valentine's Day being tomorrow, we must caution you to be careful about what you laugh at/approve of when watching in the presence of a significant other -- it might not go well.

If you watch "The Middle" on anything approaching a regular basis, you know that Norm Macdonald plays Mike's brother, and that he's something of a no good layabout (the brother, not Macdonald... although he may be as well, we couldn't say). Well, that no good layabout is going to be back tonight. We don't think that he'll have learned manners or how to be there for those who need him, but he will provide an additional measure of funny to this already generally funny series. True series aficionados will also appreciate the return of Reverend TimTom tonight.

Tonight on "The Middle," they'll be celebrating Thanksgiving and, as is traditional, they'll be doing it family, Frankie's family -- Marsha Mason and Jerry Van Dyke will be returning to series. Plus, two former Marines will be on tonight and will be portraying... Marines at Thanksgiving dinner. We aren't entirely sure how the Marines get invited to dinner, but they do, and we're not entirely sure that they'll be happy with having been invited to a Heck Thanksgiving (we're betting the Heck's don't serve turducken), but a nice family dinner is a nice family dinner.

Brooke Shields is coming back to "The Middle" tonight, reprising her role as Rita Glossner (described in the official synopsis as 'trashy neighbor Rita Glossner'). Apparently Frankie will be accusing Rita of a hose theft tonight and then all heck will break loose (not that the Hecks don't break loose on a regular basis). And, as if that wasn't enough, Axl will be explaining to Brick all about the birds and the bees... in detail. Yeah, that's not going to go well, is it? We imagine that at the conclusion of tonight's episode Brick may just decide to become a hermit.

Here, in the middle, sometimes things go long. Sometimes you're like 'This will only take 15 minutes to get done,' but then it goes for like six hours. We fully suspect that this episode was intended to only be 30 minutes but then all the funny bits made it go long. Yeah, okay, that's not at all why we're getting an hour-long super-excellent premiere of "The Middle" this week, but we're not sure the reasons matter, what matters is that the hour is coming, that we will be laughing, and that much merriment will be had.

Frankie and Mike are caught off guard when Mike's brother lists the site of the ceremony for his wedding as their house; Axl and his friends try to start their own company; Brick is mad at Mike for not letting him go to a classmate's party.

They may not get much respect, but we love the Hecks. From Frankie and Mike to Brick, Axl, and Sue, the Hecks are hysterical, one and all. We kind of refuse to believe that they are a wholly accurate representation of families in the middle of our country, but the lack of realism only adds to the comedic flavor. The characters are grounded in the real world, certainly, but we don't accept that what the Hecks undergo is what all the folks in Indiana undergo. We think fewer people would live in Indiana if the show was 100% reality.

Sue Heck regularly seems out of place in her family and with all of those around her. We are never quite sure whether she recognizes this fact, but quite obviously it is true. Tonight, she's going to find something of a mentor in the school's awkward guidance counselor, played by the one and only Whoopi Goldberg. How much fun is that going to be? Whoopi is a terribly funny woman and Sue is in need of some terribly great help, so it could be a match made in heaven, even if Whoopi is a person and Sue a character.

Sue has some issues. She deals with them really well (sometimes) on this show, but she's definitely got issues. Frankly, it's one of the reasons that she's a great character. Tonight though she may go too far when she asks Mike what it is that boys want from girls. You're an adult, you know what boys want from girls. Mike is an adult, he knows what boys want from girls. Sue, however, is a mere teen with blindspots and consequently doesn't know what boys want from girls. It is almost entirely, but not wholly, outside the realm of possibility that Mike will tell her tonight and she'll dress up as a nurse for Halloween.

Here, in "The Middle," people don't follow all the fancy shmancy stuff that happens elsewhere in the country, they care about the the things the average person cares about -- football, hamburgers, and the specific varieties of food which can be deep fried (we've heard tell of deep fried butter and are quite curious to see it cooked and, maybe, try it). That doesn't mean that the folks here don't face trials and tribulations though, they both trial and they tribulate. Tonight, their third season of such things begin with an hour-long episode.

While we're really excited for a whole bunch of new episodes of some great sitcoms on ABC tonight, we're also kind of depressed about it. "The Middle" is kicking off what promises to be a night of season finales. First this will end, then later "Modern Family," and then finally "Cougar Town." We'll be getting a whole lot of laughs tonight and it alls start with the Hecks, and that's a good thing, but the night may just end with us in tears (and that's less good).

Doris Robert is, finally, returning to "The Middle" tonight as Ms. Rinsky, Brick's math teacher. As we recall, Rinsky and Frankie haven't gotten along so well in the past, and we fully expect that trend to continue tonight. If we didn't know better, we'd suggest that the way these two women go at it on this show and on "Everybody Loves Raymond" might mean that Heaton and Roberts don't get along all that well in real life, but we like to think that we do know better and that they're just, you know, acting.
Feb 16, 2011TV Network - ABC
Kristin Cavallari is going to be playing Axl's 'hot' biology teacher. At this point in time we'd like to tell you a story about this teacher in our high school, but probably it'd be wrong to discuss her without her permission. Now, funnily enough, Axl tries to film Cavallari's character tonight without her permission (for a music video) which is far more wrong than our discussing this one-time English teacher. It's not wrong enough to make us feel like telling our story would be right, but it's still more wrong.

We're not going to lie to you - we don't live in the middle of the country. We have driven through Indiana and found it beautiful, but we're not sure that we ever stepped out of the car as we sped through the state. If anything could convince us however that we wanted to spend more time there, it would be knowing that Patricia Heaton and her brood on "The Middle" did in fact live there. Those wacky Heck's know a thing or two about living in the real world and we appreciate everything they've taught us this season.

Patricia Heaton plays Frankie Heck, a loving wife and mother of three, who is middle class living in the middle of the country and approaching middle age. Clever title, right? Throw in a husband and some quirky kids and there you have it.
