Have you ever wondered how Patrick Jane got involved with the CBI team?  Well, tonight you're going to get the chance to find out.  This is the 100th episode of "The Mentalist" and in order to make it that much more special, the producers are going to give us a look back at that first case with Jane and the CBI folks.  The episode will also feature the return of Gregory Itzin and Polly Walker.  So, get excited, go mental(ist), tonight's episode is called 'Red Dawn,' and it's going to take us back to the beginning.

Fans of Simon Baker and/or Patrick Jane have no fears -- the fifth season of "The Mentalist" ends this very night, but the sixth will start sometime during the 2013-2014 television season.  Yes, go ahead, wipe the sweat from your brow, this latter day Sherlock Holmes (not to be confused with the actual latter day Holmes on "Elementary" or "Sherlock") is going to be back to fight evil and dazzle us with his penchant for pulling the answers out of his hat for (at least) another season.  That, as we've said in the past, is no excuse for missing a season finale though.  Tune in tonight and see how year five ends.

    Sep 18, 2012

In Season Four of The Mentalist, Simon Baker returns as Patrick Jane, consultant with the California Bureau of Investigation (CBI), solving the state's toughest homicides. After gunning down serial killer Red John during Season 3's explosive finale, the question remains -- is the man Jane shot really Red John? When it comes to The Mentalist, the truth is often elusive. And with a new boss, puzzling new cases, and Red John never far from his mind, Jane will need his keen skills of observation, manipulative theatrics and smooth charm to sidestep the system that stands in the way of the truth.

Tonight's episode of "The Mentalist" is entitled 'So Long, and Thanks for all the Red Snapper,' which is quite obviously a play on the fourth book in Douglas Adams' "Hitchhiker's Guide to the Galaxy" series, "So Long, and Thanks for all the Fish."  We sincerely hope that this allusion means that Jane is going to be going around with a towel for the entirety of tonight's episode and, when he has to talk to surfers, that he inserts a babel fish into his ear so he can understand what they're saying.  He should just make sure to watch out for those sullen androids, they can really bring you down.

Samaire Armstrong ("Dirty Sexy Money") has appeared more than once this season on "The Mentalist," and she's going to be back again tonight.  For those not quite sure who she plays, she's Kimball Cho's informant/girlfriend.  There will be, we have been made to understand, shenanigans tonight involving the hiding of said relationship from Lisbon.  In our experience, hidden relationships never stay hidden for all that long, but perhaps Cho and Summer can come up with some brand-spanking new way of accomplishing the task -- there may just be a great takeaway message this evening.

All too regularly there are these television shows on the air which we don't get the chance to watch during the initial run.  Immediately, "Buffy" and "Angel" spring to mind there, and we'll tell you what we did with those series -- we watched their syndication runs and got caught up so we could begin watching their first run episodes.  Other times, there's a series (like "ER") which, despite our watching every episode, we watched again during syndication because it was just that awesome.  So, no matter whether you fall into camp A for "The Mentalist" or camp B, you can tune into TNT on Monday nights (like tonight), and get your Simon Baker goodness on.

Catherine Dent and Alicia Witt have appeared on "The Mentalist" before and they may very well appear on "The Mentalist" again after tonight.  Of course, one or both of them might pass away tonight (it is the kind of show where people die on a fairly regular basis even if those people tend not to be main characters) and then they won't appear again.  We ask you, do you really want to skip the episode and take the chance that Red John is going to do away with FBI agent Susan Darcy when you're not watching?  We certainly don't, plus, we find Simon Baker to be a terribly handsome man and will use any excuse to watch him on TV.

Michael Rady has already been on this season as Luther Wainwright and he's going to be back again (yes, as Luther Wainwright... it would just be weird if he was on as Luther's evil twin, Stryker), but joining him as another special guest this week is Craig Bierko.  Bierko won't be Stryker Wainwright either (is there a Stryker Wainwright?), but he will be a retired NFL superstar quarterback.  Please, don't suggest that's an unlikely scenario, after all it certainly is more likely that Bierko's a retired NFL superstar quarterback than his being the evil twin brother to Michael Rady's Luther Wainwright.

For only the second time in the history of "The Mentalist," Simon Baker is directing an episode.  We imagine that he's going to use some of his superhuman Shawn Spencer-inspired skills to determine what the actors are going to do before they do it so that he can make sure to have his cameras appropriately positioned.  If he does a real Shawn Spencer, he'll even get them to amp up their emotion due to the rage they feel for him.  Will it work or will his plan back fire?  Well, he's got some good guest stars this week including Missi Pyle and William Mapother, so expect a solid episode.

Michael Rady was born in 1981 (at least he was according to IMDb) and that makes him relatively young.  He will, however, be guest starring on "The Mentalist" this week as the new head of the CBI.  We are quite curious to see whether this star of the new "Melrose" is going to be playing somewhat older or if there will be many and repeated statements about this child taking over.  We imagine it will be something of the latter and that it will be dealt with in a humorous but with truly angry undertones about folks being passed over way.

Kelli Williams has appeared on any number of television shows (okay, not 'any' number, a specific number, but we're not going to be counting them all for you here and now) including "The Practice."  Perhaps though you know her better as having starred on "Medical Investigation" or "Lie to Me" or... you get the picture.  Williams won't be starring on "The Mentalist" (at least not at this moment, who can say what the future will bring), but she will be guest-starring on it tonight.  We suggest you watch, she's got a history with Jane and we think it'll great to see it all unfold.

Frances Conroy will be making an appearance this week on "The Mentalist."  Conroy will be playing the 'aristocratic' mother-in-law of the victim.  Odds are that means that she didn't commit the actual murder.  Aristocrats don't commit murder, aristocrats have people who commit murder for them.  We're not saying that she's necessarily even guilty of murder-for-hire here, we just ask that as the episode unfolds and the killer is finally unmasked, you consider -- just consider -- the fact that maybe Conroy's character is behind it all.  The solution may not be obvious, but do think about it.

We think it pretty fair to say that J.J. LaRoche's investigations have affected "The Mentalist" and the members of the team this season.  We also don't think we'd be out line in suggesting that Pruitt Taylor Vince ("Deadwood") is pretty good as the investigator from the Professional Standards Unit.  Pruitt Taylor Vince and J.J. LaRoche will both be back on the show tonight, so we'd further suggest that you should tune in and check out the goings-on.

Is it possible - is it just possible - that Simon Baker actually has the mental powers that the character on his show has, the powers so lovingly borrowed from "Psych?"  It might just be.  We can't fathom another way in which Baker would be able to not only star on the series but direct as well.  Oh sure, we've seen stars direct shows before, but usually in an ensemble sort of a thing.  It is also true that John Billingsley and Heather Tom will be guest starring this week, and while we don't want to minimize their appearance, we'd again like to point out that not only is Baker starring, he's directing too.

We have considered the issue at length and trace the downfall of "Heroes" to the moment when they gave HRG an actual name.  To that point, the entire thing was brilliant, once HRG was established as a real human being and not just HRG, things fell apart and were never the same.  HRG or Jack Coleman if you like to use the actor's actual name, is going to be on "The Mentalist" tonight which means that we can probably expect Patrick Jame to make some witty joke about superheroes and saving the world... either that or horn-rimmed glasses.

Some folks out there are familiar with the multitude of classic animated Christmas stories made by Rankin-Bass.  Kevin Rankin is not the Rankin of Rankin-Bass.  We're not saying that he's in no way related, he might just be related somehow or other, but he's not the guy who made those great, great stories.  Kevin Rankin was on "Trauma," he was on "Friday Night Lights," and now he's going to be guest-starring on "The Mentalist."  As feel-good as "The Mentalist" often is, it too is not made by Rankin-Bass.  We're sorry, it just isn't.

Some may say that their favorite performance by Malcolm McDowell is his role as Alex in "A Clockwork Orange."  Others might suggest it's his performance in "Caligula."  Or, perhaps it's as Geoffrey Tolwyn in the "Wing Commander" franchise.  For us, up until this week it has unquestionably been as Tolian Soran in "Star Trek: Generations."  Now though, following this episode of "The Mentalist," it might be as cult leader Brad Stiles. Yes, it is just possible that this role will be McDowell's finest performance ever... we're drinking the Kool-Aid.
