At what point did Joshua Malina get so old that he can portray a University President? We still think of him as that young kid on "Sports Night." We miss "Sports Night," and one of the reasons we miss it is because it had Malina on it. Consequently, we're quite pleased to see him here this week (because more Malina is always better). Also appearing this week will be Jessica Walter whom you may remember from "Arrested Development."</p>

One of the advantages of a series running for an extended period of time is that you get to have all these ancillary characters who return and whom we get to learn more about. Tonight, John Ross Bowie returns as Barry Kripke, Sheldon's nemesis. We have seen Kripke before and his encounters with Sheldon (and everyone else) haven't always gone... smoothly. What sort of joy will he bring to the show tonight? We aren't quite sure, but we do know that we're going to watch and enjoy.

The Big Bang Theory
Jan 03, 2013
TV Network - CBS
There is a theory of the universe which states that eventually, the universe will stop expanding and start contracting and that when this occurs time will begin to run backwards to the big bang. That would kind of be like the return of the big bang. This event is different though, it's not the return of the big bang, it's the return of "The Big Bang Theory" which is back for a joyous 2013, one filled with humor, and laughter, and nerds (not the candy, the people). Watch and laugh with (or at) the characters, and, who knows, if time starts running backwards maybe we'll find out that they've embedded some extra jokes, Beatles-style.

Stephen Hawking is a relatively famous individual. He is what is regularly referred to as a 'scientist' because that is his occupation. As he is a scientist, his field of knowledge fits in perfectly with many of the discussions had on "The Big Bang Theory." You may recall that Hawking appeared on an episode of this series at some point last spring, and you'd be exactly correct. He won't be appearing again tonight. Rather, Mr. Hawking will be providing a voiceover (as we understand it, you won't actually see him). See him tonight? No. Hear him? Yes.

Well, we have had a revelation. It his us like a bolt of lightning. It hit us like a ton of bricks. In other words, it hit us rather hard. Here it is (ready?) -- this series isn't actually building towards a discussion of The Big Bang. For the first five seasons we kind of thought that the show was headed towards telling us exactly what caused The Big Bang, but now we realize how foolish we were. No, the show is all about joking with/at nerds/geeks/dweebs and those who hang around them. We have laughed through the years so we won't call our time wasted, but we do feel rather foolish.

Regarding the opposite sex, they're on a steep learning curve. In every other sense, they're geniuses. Join physicists Leonard Hofstadter (Johnny Galecki) and Sheldon Cooper (Jim Parsons) as they ponder black holes, chemical deviations, girls, and other mysteries of the universe in all 24 phenomenally funny episode of the Season Five. With Penny (Kaley Cuoco) and Leonard's relationship in uncharted terrain, Sheldon, Howard (Simon Helberg), and Raj (Kunal Nayyar) discover that the feminine mystique is something that cannot be easily graphed or calculated. As they muddle through relationship "bugs" and romance re-launches, they also discover it's nothing a good roll of the D&D dice or a paintball tournament can't solve.

If we were smarter, we'd be able to suggest some sort of interesting theory about the significance of season five ending tonight, it would be physics-based specifically, we think. Said theory would try to incorporate the total number of episodes the show has done, combine it with the number of storylines that have been told, subtract the "Star Trek" character appearances, and then attempt to extrapolate the show's overall longevity. We'd call it '"The Big Bang Theory" Theory' and be totally wrong, so probably we should all just sit down, watch today's episode, and enjoy.

There are some people whom we simply love watching on television, especially as we follow their other endeavors. Good old Wil Wheaton is one of those fellows. Wheaton has been on "The Big Bang Theory" several times and he is returning tonight. What does that in fact mean? Awesomeness, lots and lots of awesomeness. Plus, you know, probably a few "Star Trek" references. Other things will happen on tonight's episode as well, but seriously, the most important (for us) is the return of Wil Wheaton.

It has been a pretty good couple of weeks for "The Big Bang Theory." Last week we got Mr. Spock himself on the show and this week we're going to be getting Stephen Hawking. Frankly, if we didn't know better we'd suggest that this was a television series which prided itself on doing terribly nerdy/geeky/dweeby things. What are these guys, PhD types? Well, whatever they may be, Wolowitz is getting the opportunity to work with Hawking (played by Hawking) tonight and apparently Sheldon gets a tad jealous.

Leonard Nimoy has done a huge number of television shows and movies throughout his career. Of course, the role he will forever be best known for is that of Mr. Spock from "Star Trek." He has played the character on and off for decades, but you don't really need us to tell you that, now do you? Sorry, we didn't mean to insult you. Tonight, after Leonard and Sheldon get some "Star Trek" collectibles, Sheldon is haunted by the voice of Mr. Spock, a voice provided by the one and only Leonard Nimoy. Oh yes, it is once again time to whip out those pointy ears and get your Vulcan on.

As we get older, television shows seem to get old more quickly. Some how, some way, "The Big Bang Theory" has already made it to episode 100. What can we say -- time flies when you're having fun, and, unquestionably, we've been having fun watching our favorite nerds (or geeks or dweebs or whatever you want to call them) live their lives. Tonight's tale will feature... yeah, like we're going to tell you that, that would totally ruin the whole thing. No, we're not going to spoil any of the 100th episode hijinx, all we're going to tell you is that there will be jokes and that many (most? all?) of them will be funny.

We hate to call Wil Wheaton evil, doing as much could cause one to be in violation Wheaton's Rule, which is something we'd never want. In fact, we think he's probably a wise, witty, individual. We have grown up with Wheaton, falling for him while watching "Encounter at Farpoint" and following him ever since, including his appearances here on "The Big Bang Theory." Tonight, he'll be joined on the series by Brent Spiner, another "Star Trek: The Next Generation" alum, which is the exact sort of thing that makes us go all wobbly inside. Man, this show was totally made for us.

If you were watching ABC Family this summer, you may have seen Katie Leclerc on "Switched at Birth," ABC Family's show about two kids who were switched at birth. In fact, Leclerc wasn't just on the show, she was one of the kids who was switched at birth. Tonight though, we don't know about her birth origins as much as we know that she's going to be guest starring as Emily, Raj's new girlfriend. We do think it would be excellent if Emily was switched at birth as well (for continuity's sake), but we wouldn't count on that actually being in her backstory.

Last year CBS made the risky choice of moving "The Big Bang Theory" off of its Monday night perch and having it anchor a new Thursday comedy block, challenging the once dominant NBC Thursday night comedy lineup. The move proved a good one and "The Big Bang Theory" thrived last season on its new night. It is therefore no surprise that the show is sticking with its Thursday time slot this season. "The Big Bang Theory" starts up tonight with back-to-back episodes, prepare to laugh.

Tonight marks the close of season four for "The Big Bang Theory," but we are happy to report that the show has already been ordered for an addition three seasons (the seventh overrall). What that means is that there is going to be an excess of nerd-dom tonight, and an excess of nerd-dom for years to come. So, whether you're laughing at them or with them, there will be plenty to laugh about, and as for the specifics of tonight's episode... well, it involves some sort of incredibly nerdy undertaking and/or misunderstanding of society at large due to seeing the world through nerd-colored glasses.

Rather than playing some sort of rogue agent for a secret corporation who works against the secret corporation and who has her mind repeatedly wiped until she doesn't, choosing instead to be everyone she's ever been, Eliza Dushku will be playing a plain, old FBI Agent this evening. Well, she'll be plain and old as much as the script and Dushku herself will allow her to be plain and old, which is probably to say that she won't be so plain and she won't be so old. We do still imagine though that she'll be funny, and if that's not a great reason to tune in, we don't know what is.

Don't be that way, don't pretend that you don't know who Woz is. If you watch "The Big Bang Theory," if you have any idea what happens on the show, if you've even slightly looked into what these guys are all about you know who Woz is. But, for those of you just reading this and without any idea who The Woz may be, we suggest you do a little research into who founded a little computer company called Apple. Yes, one of the guys had the last name Jobs, but there were two guys and both had the first name Steve. The last name of the other guy? Wozniak. See where we're going here?

Judy Greer appears on this week's "The Big Bang Theory" as the famed female physicist Dr. Elizabeth Plimpton. Now we know what you're thinking - 'really, she's playing a famed female physicist?' Our only response to you is that yes, Judy Greer will not be cross-dressing this week. What would ever make you think that she would be cross-dressing for this role? That doesn't really make any sense at all and we urge you to, in the future, think before you ask such a foolish, foolish question. Oh, who are we kidding, you ask any question you want to ask, we're happy to answer it.

Wil Wheaton, or as we like to think of him, that guy who starred as that kid who showed up Data back in the day before eventually leaving the show and who now has that blog, is going to be putting in another appearance on 'The Big Bang Theory' tonight. Well, perhaps 'appearance' doesn't go quite far enough. Wil Wheaton will be guest starring as Wil Wheaton tonight. Wheaton as Wheaton will be bowling against Sheldon for reasons we're slightly hazy on but may not truly matter to begin with. He may be evil on the show, but we're still pulling for Wil.

The second season finale for CBS' "The Big Bang Theory" apparently finds Penny and Leonard examining their feelings for each other, which is exactly where we were in the first season finale, not that we count on sitcoms to make any real year-to-year progress.
In "The Monopolar Expedition," Leonard and the gang announce plans to spend the summer at the North Pole, which leaves Penny conflicted.
