The Amazing Race

A pit stop earlier this season on 'The Amazing Race'

The Amazing Race

Mar 24, 2013 08:00 PM

TV Network - CBS

Okay, our flyover description isn't quite accurate, or it isn't quite accurate depending on when you read it.  We say in it that we're not more than halfway through this cycle of the race.  The cycle is 12 episodes long and tonight is episode six which is to say that once the episode concludes we have reached the halfway point, but before it finishes we're not quite there.  Even so, things are getting serious and favorites are starting to emerge.  See if your pick survives the night.  Our most certainly will not as they were eliminated a few weeks back.  Sigh, maybe we'll get it right next season.

We would love to be able to tell you just who it is that is going home with the million dollars this year, but the truth is that it isn't us and so we're moderately miffed.  Oh, sure, you're going to say that just because we weren't on the race that means that we shouldn't get to go home with the prize money.  Yeah, well, we feel differently.  We have watched the race this season and the conclusion we've come to is that we deserve the cash as much as anyone else.  In fact, we deserve the money more than some of them.  Still, we won't be winning it this time out.  Maybe next year.

The race for movie awards ends tonight (and probably starts up again in something like six weeks), but the race that Phil Keoghan chairs is only hitting its stride.  Episode two of the 22nd cycle of "The Amazing Race" airs tonight, which makes it 2-2-2.  We aren't suggesting that you should play the lotto with those numbers (nor make them the combo on your luggage), but it's kind of special, isn't it?  It kind of makes us wonder if we should be finding out if there's a film nominated tonight that runs two hours and twenty-two minutes (or worse, 222 minutes).

Tonight, Phil Keoghan will send a new set of teams on a race around the world.  What we wouldn't give to be one of those teams... or one half of one of those teams.  We would, we expect, be complete rubbish at it, but we don't feel the certainty of being good precludes the desire to be on the show.  If only we were a pseudo-celebrity or one-time reality contestant or former "Big Brother" houseguest.  That could get us on the show.  Well, maybe next cycle.  This cycle, we're just going to watch and enjoy yelling at the TV as people make big mistakes that we're certain we could have avoided.

Every season, Phil Keoghan wishes people good luck and sends them on a race around the world.  Now, watching the opening episode, we can all pick out a half-dozen teams who not only deserve to go home, but who probably shouldn't have been on the race to begin with.  Those teams are now gone, and on tonight's two hour season finale the wheatiest of the wheat will race against each other in an attempt to take home a whole lot of prize money.  Remember that season where the team who went business class won because they got off the plane first?  We hope that doesn't happen again.

If there is one thing that we have learned from "The Amazing Race" it is, quite simply, don't get in the wrong cab.  We don't exactly know how we'd implement such a brilliant strategy, but we promise you that it would certainly be our strategy.  That, and don't get lost.  Think about how many teams through the years have lost a million dollars simply because they got lost or their cab didn't know where to go.  We promise you that at least one person gets eliminated this season because of it.

At the end of tonight's "Amazing Race," one team will be one million dollars richer.  Well, one million dollars minus taxes, but really, are we going to quibble?  Tonight, we're going to find out who has won the 20th edition of "The Amazing Race," and which are the last two teams to have been philiminated.  Okay, Phil won't actually eliminate them, he'll declare them the first and second losers, but the point is that they'll have lost and that someone else will have won.  Be sure to tune in to tonight's two hour finale and see just who reaches the mat first and who goes home a wee bit more sad.

Over on some other channel tonight there are golden statues being handed out.  It really is quite a big thing, but just because it's a big thing doesn't mean that it's for everyone.  There are certainly a whole bunch of people out there who would rather watch some good old reality television than spend time watching celebrities give speeches.  We are not going to call that any sort of a bad or wrong decision, to each his own.  Should you fall into that non-Oscar watching category, might we suggest that you give "The Amazing Race" a gander tonight it is... well, rather amazing.

It is time once again to embark upon a race around the world.  And, as has become our usual M.O., we are again in the midst of convincing ourselves that this season will, in fact, be better than the last.  We long for the fun and excitement which occurred three or four seasons ago on the race, we long for more cheese-roll wondrousness.  We long for people getting the opportunity to take 18 different flights and having to work out the best routes for themselves rather than everyone always ending up on the same flight (or one of two different flights).  We also long for Phil to say 'A race around the world' which we're sure will happen tonight.

We always find the season finale of "The Amazing Race" to be disappointing.  It isn't that we don't correctly choose the winners or anything like that, it's much more that we watch the show (at least in part) to see people get Philiminated and no one gets Philiminated on the finale.  Tonight we get a winner, a first loser and a second loser, but there is no Philimination.  We kind of hope that one year a team does so badly in the finals that they don't even get to be called second loser, that Phil has to go out to them and send them home without letting them get to that final mat.

With apologies, sometimes it feels as though too many teams are present at the start of "The Amazing Race."  While we like that opening bits of the season, things tend to improve after the teams who shouldn't be present are eliminated.  We can't say for a certainty that tonight's episode will begin with all the extra teams eliminated, but we are moving in that direction and things will certainly be getting better.  Plus, with fewer teams, you actually get to learn about the folks on the race and make a more sensible pick for the winner.

It has been a moderately-hard fought battle on "The Amazing Race" this season.  We know that they've termed the season 'Unfinished Business,' but frankly it seems as though a lot of the teams had their business finished an awfully long time ago (like before the season began).  Even so, lackluster or not, someone has to win a million dollars and tonight that winner will be revealed.  The other two teams will both find themselves philiminated.

The subtitle for this season's "Amazing Race" is "Unfinished Business."  What that means is that we're getting a whole bunch of teams who didn't win coming back to try again.  We think they would have probably called it "The Amazing Race: First Losers" if they only went out to second place, but the name becomes cumbersome when they go out to third and beyond ("The Amazing Race: First, Second, Third and Fourth Losers" is rather too long).  Expect to see some of your favorite teams back again to try and win it all one last time (as well as some of those whom you well and truly hated).

At the end of tonight, one team will be crowned as the champions of "The Amazing Race," two other teams will be deemed 'not quite as good as those who won.'  Yes, in truth the winner was determined months ago, but they haven't been allowed to tell anyone that they won until after this episode airs, so it hasn't really counted until now.  Think about it, it's like one of those 'if a tree falls in the forest' things, if you win "The Amazing Race" but can't tell a soul did you really win?  We're just not so sure.

'So-and-so and Joe Bob, I'm sorry to tell you, but you are the last team to arrive and have been Philiminated.'  Just one time we'd like to hear Phil say that; just one time we want to hear him Philiminate someone.  Surely after all these seasons (even last Spring's incredibly disappointing remedial version of the show) Phil could, just once, tell someone that they've been Philiminated.  He could then do his eyebrow arch thing.  It would be great.  Sure, the contestants would get upset, but he wouldn't have to see them again until the finish line.  Come on CBS, Philiminate someone this year.

And then it was down to three.  "The Amazing Race" has whittled down this season of decidedly below average teams to a mere three.  How those three teams have arrived at this point may have been kind of ugly, but the methodology matters less than the result, and the result is that each of the remaining teams has a shot at winning a million dollars.  We don't think anyone out there would suggest that this was the best season of "The Race," but it still has been a season of "The Race" and we still want to know how it ends.

Think of it as a valentine from CBS to us - on this 14th of February, Phil Keoghan will return as our tour guide on a race across not just multiple countries, but multiple continents.  This is the 16th edition of "The Amazing Race" and yet the show is always able to bring in great new tasks and challenges and keep it seeming fresh.  We're not quite sure what tricks they will have for us this go round, but whatever the curveballs may be, we're definitely looking forward to them (even if the contestants aren't).

This is it, the moment we've been waiting all season for, the moment when Cheyne & Meghan are crowned winners of "The Amazing Race."  Well, it will either be them or Sam & Dan or Brian & Ericka.  We know as much because those are the last three teams still in the race.  Though we're still smarting from the Globetrotters virtually throwing in the towel last week, we still find ourselves curious as to just how everything will turn out.  The teams are in Vegas, so expect glitz, glamour, and, fingers crossed, at least one Elvis impersonator as the teams race to the final mat.

Last week's episode of "The Amazing Race" never ended. Well, that's not true. It ended, but Jaime and Cara reached host Phil Keoghan at the matt and they were told that the leg hadn't ended.

Will Jaime and Cara be able to keep their lead? Will Tammy and Victor continue to capitalize on their familiarity with Beijing? Will Margie and Luke continue to bicker with Jen and Kisha?

The episode is titled "He Made Me Look Like Alice Cooper."

    Take that as you will.

It's been a rough couple weeks for CBS' Emmy-winning reality juggernaut. First two weeks ago, the team that just about everybody in America was rooting for arrived at the mat last and was eliminated. Then last week, the show was preempted for the ACM Awards.

Oh and don't forget the several weeks of episodes delayed or pushed around by NCAA Tournament basketball games.

This week? Thai karaoke in an episode titled "Rooting Around In People's Mouths Could Be Unpleasant (Thailand)"

    As always, Phil Keoghan hosts.
