TV Network - ABC Family"Switched at Birth" not only explores the not-too-regularly-occurring phenomenon of babies getting switched at birth, but also the far more regular fact of dealing with deafness and use of American Sign Language. In point of fact, the series has won some awards including one for 'its groundbreaking and seamless inclusion of performers with disabilities, storylines that showcase new assistive technologies, and ethnic diversity.' Take a look and see what you've been missing before the show ends for the time being.

Switched at Birth
Jun 10, 2013
TV Network - ABC Family
ABC Family has done quite a job carving out a niche for itself with new hour-long comedy-dramas or dramedies or whatever you want to call them. Amongst these series is "Switched at Birth" with returns tonight with new episodes of the show's second season. The series, as the title indicates, features girl who were switched at birth but have now found out and the families have moved on (or attempted to) from there. There are a whole lot of various issues within the series and for the most part they are dealt with in a heartfelt, forthright, and honest manner.

We know people who swear by "Switched at Birth." Seriously, they obsess. They watch it on one of those iDevices and then get all huffy when they catch up and there are no new episodes to watch. In fact, we get hit when that happens (why is it our fault, we can't imagine). It could be one of those issues that results from having two families merge into one due to a hospital error more than a decade earlier, but we're not entirely sure. This is what we know -- people love their "Switched at Birth" and are clamoring for resolution. Clamoring, we tell you. Clamoring.

Those who have been watching "Switched at Birth" are, more than likely, hugely engrossed in the on-going trial on the show. For those who aren't engrossed--yet--we'll catch you up quite briefly: there's a trial taking place on "Switched at Birth." But, after tonight, there won't be. Tonight is not only the first season finale (like real season, not like summer season or fall season or anything like that) for "Switched at Birth," but it is also the end of the trial. Tonight, we'll find out what is going to happen, and then we can all wait with great anticipation for the beginning of season two so that we can witness the fallout.

Switched at Birth

TV Network - ABC Family
For reasons known mostly to ABC Family, "Switched at Birth" ended up with a large 32 episode first season order. Thus far, we've seen 24 of said 32 episodes. The run of the final eight episodes begins tonight. We would call that the final quarter of the season but then we'd want to do a whole discussion about how the season can be thought of as quadruplets and this show doesn't even deal with twins, it deals with two kids who were switched at birth (see the show's title). Wouldn't that be something to learn that you were switched at birth with someone else? Maybe someone rich who ends up feeling bad and paying all your bills? We like to think of that as a silver lining.

We have learned a lot of things watching switched at birth type programs, but the one things that really sticks out from them is the fact that if you've been switched at birth you have a limited time frame in which to capitalize on your tragedy amongst your friends and family. There is a definite window during which you can whine and get anything you want, but once that window closes, it closes forever. We won't comment on where "Switched at Birth" is in that process, but we will say that tonight is the season finale so you can expect some pretty dramatic moments (and maybe a cliffhanger!).
