Every time a season of "Survivor" ends, we are treated to a three hour extravaganza. The first two hours are the final episode and this is, immediately, followed by the reunion episode. Tonight we will learn which individual has won a million dollars and, potentially, if blood is stronger than water. We are wondering if there will be some sort of scientific test done to determine the relative strengths of each liquid. Surely over the course of three hours they could take five minutes to figure out once and for all whether we should drink blood or water (that is the question, isn't it?).

This new season of "Survivor" is going to offer up a whole lot of returning people. But, it won't be 100% returning folks. In fact, as we understand it, it'll be 50% returning. The other 50% is going to be comprised of loved ones of that first group. So, as an example, Rupert will be on. He has been on before. His loved one, his wife, hasn't been on before. Eventually, should Rupert and his wife make it to the final two, they'll have to compete against each other for the million dollars. That would be anti-climactic. Hopefully the season winds up more exciting than that.

In traditional "Survivor" format, the show is going to give us a two hour finale followed by a one hour reunion. That means that we're getting, as we usually do with "Survivor" finales, three full hours of Jeff Probst "Survivor" goodness. Expect to see wonderful discussions of what took place during the season; what we didn't see; and perhaps we'll even get a glimpse into the mind of what the heck the contestants were thinking when they did x, y, or z. Also, someone will be declared the winner and as interesting as the rest of it might be, it's finding out who won that is really the most important thing.

It is time for us all to go back to the island and this ought to be a pretty good edition of the venerable series. On one side of the island you've got your favorite "Survivor" castaways, and on the other side you've got the people who love them... at least in a fan sort of way. The fans have been watching the game for years and they have a pretty good idea about how things work, or at least they think they do. The favorites, they've been here before (okay, not here, but on an island playing the game) and they actually know what it takes to win (or come close to it). The game begins anew tonight.

We like that the basic format notion of these three hour "Survivor" finales hasn't changed through the years. Okay, yes, what happens on them may be different, but CBS still delivers a two hour finale and an hour-long reunion show every cycle. We would quibble a little with the argument that the winner is the one who outwits, outplays, and outlasts every single time, but the winner has always done a generally good job of that. And who will tonight's champion be? Well, if you watch, it'll be you -- you'll have won simply for taking part in the event (isn't that what we do these days?)
