Saturday Night Live

TV Network - NBCIt's always a little extra special when a former cast member returns to host the series, and tonight they've got a particularly good one with Dana Carvey doing the honors. Carvey may not have had the most successful post-"SNL" career when compared to other cast members, but for our money he's one of the funniest people to ever star on the show. Think of all the great characters he created, think of all the incredible impressions that he did. How could one man do so much great stuff on a single series? Could it be... SATAN?

TV Network - NBC
In the near future, like at the end of this episode, "Saturday Night Live" will end its 38th season. Ben Affleck will be present to help us all yuck it up, and Kanye West will be providing the tunes. Now, if you're us, you hope that Jennifer Garner will appear too, but we're not sure how likely it really is. Perhaps she'll just be there in the audience, cheering her husband on. We will totally be pretending that we're said husband, but, you know, we aren't. Sad for us, but let's focus on the happy -- Ben Affleck and Kanye West should make this a pretty great finale.

Kristen Wiig is returning to "Saturday Night Live" tonight in order to host the sketch comedy series. You may know Kristen Wiig from "Bridesmaids," "Friends with Kids," or perhaps a sketch comedy series called "Saturday Night Live." Oh yes, it's true, Wiig was on the show back in the day (which, we think, means last season, but time has gone fuzzy for us), and is returning to host tonight. Vampire Weekend is the musical guest, so we suggest you suck all the marrow out of this one... or go for the jugular... or some other vampire-esque reference.

We believe that "SNL" is going to be airing a total of 21 new episodes this season and tonight's is number 19. That means that after tonight we are looking at a mere two more episodes. As for tonight's host, it's Zach Galifianakis and we can't even begin to describe the amount of time it took us to write his last name. Whatever happened to actors using fake, easy, last names? Clearly Zach Galifianakis (wow, we wrote it again) opted to not go that route. Of Men and Monsters are tonight's musical guest.

We apologize in advance for dating ourselves, but we're going to do it anyway. Vince Vaughn is hosting "Saturday Night Live" this week and the truth of the matter is that Vaughn is so money and he doesn't even know it. Okay, that isn't the truth, is it, and we did promise the truth. Vaughn is well aware that he's money. But, Vaughn is money. It is certainly accurate to state that none of the letters in 'Vaughn' appear in the word 'money' but one has little to do with the other. The money man (Vaughn, in case you didn't get that) hosts "SNL" tonight, so tune in and keep your fingers crossed that the writers also date themselves with a "Swingers" reference, we certainly will.

This week's episode of "SNL" is going to feature the incredibly funny Melissa McCarthy. Not only does McCarthy star in a popular CBS sitcom, but she can be found in some very funny film roles as well. What will she offer up tonight? We expect that she'll find herself taking part in a number of sketches, doing a little bit of a monologue, and introducing musical guest Phoenix. How do we know all this? Because that's what all the hosts of "SNL" do. Well, except for introducing Phoenix, Phoenix isn't the musical guest every week.

At this point, let's face it, Justin Timberlake being on "Saturday Night Live" makes your mind go to one place. There you are, you hear Timberlake is going to be on, and what do you think to yourself? We'll tell you, you think that quite probably you should get him a gift, a gift for coming back and agreeing to be funny once more. We applaud your thought process, but we'd like to remind you that as honored as he might be by your presenting him a gift, he's probably not terribly interested in it should the making of the gift involve three steps, the first being to cut a hole in a box and the last having him open the box. In fact, that may be a place where the thought doesn't count.

It is always nice to see a comedian host "Saturday Night Live," what with this being a sketch comedy show and comedians being (generally speaking) quite good at the whole comedy thing. Now, tonight's host, Kevin Hart is a comedian and so it will be natural for him to make with the funny which can only help the series. The musical guests are Macklemore & Ryan Lewis and consequently it will be quite natural for them to make with the tunes. Watch and see how both aspects of the show fare tonight.

Christoph Waltz is a funny, funny man. Well, we think he is anyway and that he was just brilliant in "Django Unchained." Obviously others feel the same way as Waltz is nominated for an Academy Award for his performance in "Django." Tonight though, we shan't worry about awards, we shall just worry about yucks. Waltz hosts "SNL" with Alabama Shakes present to perform a few songs. Tune in, laugh, and contemplate Waltz's chances next weekend.

That's right all you teen and pre-teen girls (and everyone else out there who loves him even if you won't admit it), Justin Bieber is going to be on "Saturday Night Live" tonight and he's not just going to be singing, he's going to be hosting the entire thing too. We are hugely excited, terribly excited, ridiculously excited. Apparently, despite all appearances, we're a Belieber. You ought to be a Belieber too, not only is the fellow terribly charismatic, but he can sing. Tonight we'll learn if he can tell jokes.

'Hey look, it's that guy from "The Voice," no, not him or him, the other one' is what we imagine more than one person has said when spotting Adam Levine. We are here to tell you that reducing Levine in such a fashion is unfair. Adam Levine is also the lead singer of Maroon 5, and only got the gig on "The Voice" because of that. We don't know why Levine isn't singing tonight, but he isn't. Probably we should just accept that and be happy that the dude is going to be present. As for the music, Kendrick Lamar is going to be offering us that.

There we were the other night, thinking to ourselves that it would be truly swell if the odds were ever in our favor and now, bam, there's Katniss Everdeen herself hosting "Saturday Night Live." The odds, most clearly, are in our favor. If Peeta or Gale shows up, the odds may change, but as of right now, with just us and Katniss... favor. All of that is to say that you should probably expect some sort of "Hunger Games" reference tonight as Jennifer Lawrence hosts "SNL," and don't expect the reference to come in the form of a song from The Lumineers, it'll be in a sketch.

No, you're not wrong, Paul McCartney was at "Saturday Night Live" last year as well. But, why would you not want to see one of the greatest musicians of all time back on live television (as opposed to having to pay incredibly high ticket prices to see him in person)? Frankly, we love it. We also love Martin Short returning to the series and greatly wonder if he's going to bust out any of his classic characters. We certainly hope so, but we aren't going to hold our breath... mostly because it would prevent us from laughing when the funny happens.

Jamie Foxx first came to our attention the same way that he first came to so many people's attention -- by standing outside our house with a boombox over his head professing his love (oddly, he played no music on the boombox, he simply held it). Either that or by being on "In Loving Color." Consequently, Jamie Foxx is no stranger to sketch comedy... or to ridiculously embarrassing antics depending on which of the above statements you believe. Watch and see Jamie return to those sketch comedy roots tonight. Honestly, we're just hoping he doesn't profess his love to us once more, we've moved on and it's kind of over the top to do it on national television.

Saturday Night Live: SNL Christmas
Nov 28, 2012
TV Network - NBC
You know them, you love them, you want to see them again. Tonight, "Saturday Night Live" gives us two hours of great Christmas skits. You should expect to see classics from back in the day as well as classics from yesterday. You see, "Saturday Night Live" has been on the air for more than 30 years (they're actually pushing 40), which means that even if they had one good Christmas skit every year, and each skit ran a mere three minutes, they would have more than enough to fill these two hours of programming.

There was never just one, was there? Jeremy Renner star of... let's go with "The Bourne Legacy" instead of "The Avengers" or "Mission: Impossible IV - Ghost Protocol" is going to be guest starring on "Saturday Night Live" tonight, and that should be quite swell. Enhancing the swellness factor are going to be a couple (maybe 'a few' if we're lucky) performances by Maroon 5. oh yes, it's true, Maroon 5 and Jeremy Renner all on this pre-Thanksgiving "SNL" episode. It is going to be stuffed to the gills -- just like us after a delicious turducken.

The world is, one hopes, returning to normal at this point. The Presidential election is over (all of it but the crying anyway), and the Northeast has returned--at least somewhat--to normal following the Frankenstorm. Tonight, we celebrate that return with a new "Saturday Night Live," one which will be hosted by Anne Hathaway and feature Rihanna singing. That is really a pretty good deal -- Hathaway and Rihanna are both strong performers (even if one wouldn't normally stick them in the same sentence) and, "SNL" ought to be able to make a whole bunch of topical election-based jokes.

Bruno Mars is hosting "SNL" this week. And, as for the band, we'll be seeing Bruno Mars. That is right, it's twofer -- Bruno Mars hosts and Bruno Mars performs. Now, if you're so inclined, you could decide that it's Bruno Mars performing and Bruno Mars hosting, but we tend to list the host before the performer (hence Bruno Mars and Bruno Mars as opposed to Bruno Mars and Bruno Mars). Do you ever write something so many times that it no longer sounds quite real? Yeah, we're there with Bruno Mars and Bruno Mars, host and performer respectively (or vice versa).

Christina Applegate (NBC's "Up all Night" or, if you're old school, FOX's "Married with Children," or, if you're awesome, 1991's "Don't Tell Mom the Babysitter's Dead") is going to be hosting "Saturday Night Live" this weekend. Wracking our brains, we seem to recall that Applegate hosted once before, towards the beginning of May in 1993. Yes, yes, we seem to remember her coming right after Kirstie Alley but before Kevin Kline, and Midnight Oil being the musical guest when Applegate hosted. Okay, it's true, you caught us, we have excellent recall of "SNL" episodes. You can color yourself impressed.

Wow, here we are at the end of September, and SNL is already on the third episode of the season. If they're only going to do something on the order of 22 or 24 episodes, we could be looking at a significant number of repeats down the line. Of course, who knows, they may end up doing 40 episodes and we'll get new episodes every week from now until the end of May. It may lead to some heart attacks in the SNL offices, but if the show can be funny, is the health of the players and producers something that concerns you?

There are certain things in this world upon which we like to count. Chief among these is that the timer on our coffee pot won't fail and that we'll have hot, delicious, wonderful caffeine waiting for us when we wake up in the morning. Somewhere slightly below that on the list is the existence of "Saturday Night Live." It is nice to know that after we drink too much of that delicious coffee on a Saturday, the sketch comedy series will be there late at night with us when we can't sleep. The 38th season continues tonight.

Saturday Night Live: Primetime Election Special
Sep 20, 2012
TV Network - NBC
Do you remember four years ago how SNL did all those fantastic election special episodes where they focused on politics for a half-hour and were merciless towards Sarah Palin? This is that again, except that it's four years later and Sarah Palin isn't running for anything (except if you're amongst those who believe that she's running for the 2016 election in the same way Romney started running for 2012 the day after McCain lost). Tune in and watch the sketch comedy players as they mock our political system and those who take part in it.

Oh stop it with your 'This show isn't as good as when Tina Fey was on it,' because when Tina Fey was on it people thought it wasn't as good as when Mike Myers was on it, and when he was on it, people thought it wasn't as good as when Eddie Murphy was on it, and when he was on it people thought it wasn't good as when the original cast was on it. Sure, some seasons are better than others, but there is regularly something to be amused at on the show and tonight is the season finale, so it just may be more amusing than most plus, it's hosted by the one and only Mick Jagger, a man who has the moves like... well... you know. And, Jagger is bringing some special friends to rock with him.

You may already be aware of Will Ferrell's work. In fact, the comedian was once a cast member of a sketch comedy series called "Saturday Night Live." Yes, yes, that's right, Will Ferrell was once on this very television show which he is now returning to host (again). We believe that Mr. Ferrell will crack wise, crack unwise, and potentially crack-up in the middle of a sketch.
Usher will be the musical guest.

He looks deep, he looks short, he sees Victor Cruz in the flat and... completion and a first down. That's right people, Eli Manning is hosting tonight and look for the two-time Tom Brady-beating-in-the-Super-Bowl Champion to work the show slowly and methodically, moving down field consistently with well-timed, well-organized, safe, jokes. Oh sure, he'll throw the long bomb of a joke every once in a while (look for him to take the opportunity for that early to put the audience on its heels), but expect a whole lot of jokes headed out into the flat.

The time has come once again for us all to stay up extra late and watch "Saturday Night Live" and host Josh Brolin deliver the sketch comedy for which it is so well known. It is certainly true that the day after a new "Saturday Night Live" episode many folks are slightly more bleary-eyed for their have stayed up so late the night before, but is that such a bad thing? Oh sure, those folks may contribute to the ultra-slow 'Sunday driver' phenomenon, but would you honestly rather get where you're going quickly on a Sunday morning or would you rather have the opportunity to laugh until you cry on Saturday night?

Over the course of this week, the writers and actors on "Saturday Night Live" have put in an amazing number of hours, and they've done it all solely so that you, turning on your TV because you can't sleep, can find something to laugh about on this Saturday night. So, what better way is there to show your appreciation for all the hard work Seth Meyers and company have put in over the last six days than to drink a double espresso at 10:30 tonight so that you can, purposely, be awake for the entirety of this week's Sofia Vergara-hosted episode?

"Saturday Night Live" is a venerable institution. It is a show which constantly renews and reinvents itself. Oh sure, it may follow the same basic format that it's had for years, but the cast, the writers, and even the humor itself turn over on a fairly regular basis. Tonight, the show will feature a guest host, a musical guest, and Weekend Update. Weekend Update is perhaps the best known portion of the show and certainly our favorite (hey, no jokes about them saying goodbye at the end of the night being your favorite part). Give it a go again tonight, you'll love it, Jonah Hill ("21 Jump Street") is hosting!

Lindsay Lohan has hosted "Saturday Night Live" before... long before (and more than once). Lohan last hosted the show back in 2006 before all the various problems which have surrounded her life and career began. We don't blame "SNL" for creating any issues for Lohan, but maybe, somehow, they can stop them. Maybe this is going to be just what Lohan needs in order to get everything back on the right track. Wouldn't that be nice? It would also be nice if tonight's episode was funny. We like it when the show is funny.

It is hard to watch any given episode of "Saturday Night Live" and not remember all the good times the show has experienced through its insanely long run. We actually tend to think that's the reason why, when people think of the current season, it always feels less funny than past seasons. The truth is, of course, that people only remember the funny moments from past years, not the unfunny ones -- so, you of course can remember 12 great sketches from the show's first season which actually only amounts to one from every other episode and you're also thinking of some Bill Murray sketches and he wasn't on the show's first season anyway. So, tune in, laugh it up, and don't compare it to years past.

Over the course of the last six or eight months, Zooey Deschanel has gotten herself a hit television show and a hit album, that's not bad. Plus, if you ask us, she's adorkable. That's right, isn't it, adorkable? That is what the kids are saying, aren't they -- Zooey Deschanel is adorkable? We do think we've heard that somewhere before. Well, whether or not that's what the kids are saying, we can tell you with a great deal of certainty (because it's what the press release told us) that this is the first time that Deschanel has ever been on "Saturday Night Live," and be on she will as this week she's the host.

Ah, Channing Tatum. This could be a very big year for Channing Tatum. Amongst other films, this year he appears in "Haywire," "21 Jump Street," "The Vow," "G.I. Joe: Retaliation," and "Magic Mike." That is a pretty solid list of stuff, and there are going to be more to come. Plus, he's hosting "Saturday Night Live" tonight, and that's pretty big as well. People always like to knock "Saturday Night Live," but let's face it, the show is an institution and to be asked to host it is an honor. Bon Iver will be providing the music this week.

Did we ever tell you that we once met Daniel Radcliffe? Nice kid. Well, he was a kid then, now he's clearly an adult and he's going to be starring in an adult-type movie which is, presumably, why he's hosting "Saturday Night Live" tonight. We figure that they'll still manage to work in a few Harry Potter jokes -- it would be disappointing if they didn't, wouldn't it? Actually, we're really hoping that they'll do one of those Q&A monologues with fake audience members and have one dressed as a Hogwarts wizard. That sounds new, fun, and different, doesn't it?

Charles Barkley has hosted "SNL" before and, perhaps, Charles Barkley will host "SNL" again. All we can be sure of at this exact moment in time is that Charles Barkley (we still like to call him Sir Charles) will be hosting "Saturday Night Live" tonight. We fully expect him to deliver a few jokes, watch a few jokes get delivered around him, and most certainly, to introduce Kelly Clarkson as tonight's singer no fewer than two times (perhaps three, but we'd bet on two).

This is, as you will understand if you look at the date, the final new episode before the Christmas holiday. That also means that this is going to be the show's Christmas episode. We greatly look forward to the joy, the merriment, and the horrible mocking that will take place of more than one person, viewpoint, tradition, etc. Tonight's episode is going to be hosted by Jimmy Fallon and will feature the song stylings (probably of the Chrismas variety) of Michael Buble. Get merry, the holidays are here.

Oh sure, you might think that Katy Perry's appearing on "Saturday Night Live" would mean that she was going to sing as she is a singer. Well, she's not (singing, not a singer we mean). Or, more accurately, she might sing, but she isn't the musical guest -- she'll only sing if the sketch calls for it. Perry is actually the host of tonight's episode which means she gets to do stuff like the monologue and appear in oh so many sketches. It is actually Robyn who will be the musical guest tonight which means that Robyn probably (but not certainly) won't be making the yucks but only with the music.

Steve Buscemi, star of screen (big) and screen (little) is the host of tonight's "Saturday Night Live." Now, we remember Buscemi from back in the day, when he appeared in "Things to do in Denver when You're Dead," and consequently we've always sort of thought of him in that role. Of course, Buscemi is now the star of the hit HBO series "Boardwalk Empire," which, not coincidentally, is having it's season finale in just over a week. The Black Keys will be providing the musical interludes during tonight's show. It should make for quite a good episode.

What we are about to say we say with great amusement, great merriment, and great joy. People, it is time to start the music, it is time to light the lights. In short, it is time to meet the Muppets on "SNL" tonight. No, we don't know that any real and true Muppets will be appearing, but Jason Segel, star of the new Muppet movie, is going to be on the show, and he's virtually a Muppet himself. We expect much goofing, much shenanigans, and a truly wonderful night with Muppet-based sketches. We can't swear that will all occur, but we certainly hope it will.

Not to take anythign away from the excellent hosts we've had so far this season, but the musical guests have been truly outstanding. Thus far this season we've gotten Radiohead, Lady Antebellum, Foster the People, Maroon 5, and now Coldplay. Holy macaroni, if the series keeps going like this they may want to consider doing a couple sketches between the musical numbers and not vice versa. Emma Stone takes the hosting duties tonight and between her and Coldplay this ought to be a solid evening's entertainment.

That is right, Maroon 5 is going to the band tonight, and Charlie Day is going to be making with the jokes. We are a little about Charlie Day being on the show. It is not that he isn't funny--he is hugely funny--it's just that we find him so on "It's Always Sunny in Philadelphia" and even with "SNL" not being a primetime series, some of the jokes on the FX series are a little raunchy for network TV no matter the hour. Will "SNL" appropriately utilize Day's talent to ensure that he's funny in a network-acceptable manner? Find out tonight.

In case you haven't been following her, as it turns out, Anna Faris is an incredibly funny woman. Did you realize that Faris has been starring in comedies for more than a decade? That's right, "Scary Movie" is more than a decade old and Faris is still going strong. Faris' fall film is "What's Your Number?," but she'll be on the big screen again come the winter for the new "Alvin and the Chipmunks" movie... or at least her voice will be on the big screen for that one. Tonight though, we get to see and hear her in many a sketch comedy bit.

You may find this hard to believe, but this is only the second time that Ben Stiller is hosting "Saturday Night Live." Seriously, it's only the second time. We were sure that he would be in the five timer's club by now, but that is not the case. The man will be on tonight in order to promote "Tower Heist" which is releasing on November 4. Now, for those interested, his previous hosting appearance was in 1998 with Alanis Morissette doing the music. This time it will be Foster the People doing the music.

Funny in "Bridesmaids," funny on "Mike & Molly," and funny in plenty of other projects as well, Melissa McCarthy has proven herself more than once. This week though she'll have her work cut out for her as she'll be handling the hosting duties on "Saturday Night Live" for the show's second episode of the season. Musical group Lady Antebellum will be doing a couple of songs during the show and we fully expect that you'll be able to see "SNL" staples like 'Weekend Update' as well. Seriously, what kind of "SNL" episode wouldn't have 'Weekend Update?'

Tonight is a very special night for "Saturday Night Live." Ignoring, for as long as the series will let us, whatever season this is of "Saturday Night Live," tonight Alec Baldwin will surpass Steve Martin as the individual who has hosted the series the most times. That's a pretty big thing and we kind of hope that it starts a Twitter war between Baldwin and Martin or, at the very least, that Martin comes back and hosts the show five times this season to resolidify his place.

Put whatever you want in that box as a gift, tonight's "Saturday Night Live" season finale is going to be a monster episode. Justin Timberlake is getting to host the affair with Lady Gaga doing the music. That's a pretty big way for "SNL" to end the season and hopefully the caliber of sketches we get tonight are equally big, whetting all of our appetites for another year of "Saturday Night Live." Who knows, maybe we'll even get a Timberlake/Gaga duet. Now that could be fun.

Ed Helms seems to us like one of those quietly funny people. He was folded into "The Office" beautifully and has become an integral part of that series. He was unquestionably one of the highlights of "The Hangover," and, basically, makes us smile every time we see him, be it in a big part or a small one. He is getting the opportunity to host this penultimate episode of this 36th season of "Saturday Night Live" and ought to add more than a little bit of a spark to the series. The man is a character and consequently hopefully will do pretty well playing a whole bunch of characters.

Do not think of Tina Fey coming back to host "Saturday Night Live" again as some sort of problem for the long-running sketch comedy show. Tina Fey is an incredibly funny woman, one with a bestselling book and a television show which is finishing up its fifth season (and which has already been renewed for a sixth). The woman has a whole lot to promote, writes great sketches, and is funny when delivering the material herself. We are kind of hoping that Sarah Palin does something wacky so that Fey can bust out her Palin this week, but don't really see that taking place.

Holy mackerel, the British invasion is continuing on "Saturday Night Live" this week. Sir Paul McCartney? Check. Sir Elton John? Check. Dame Helen Mirren? Check. Maybe the season finale will have those crazy royal couple kids, Prince William and Kate Middleton (by then Princess Kate) hosting and providing musical accompaniment as well. Do either of them sing? Even if they don't would that stop "SNL" from having them do so? Those though are questions for a late date, tonight we'll just bask in Dame Helen and the Foo Fighters.

Holy macaroni is "Saturday Night Live" getting some classic British musicians this season... and by some we really mean two, but let's face it, they're two monster ones. Back in December of course we had Sir Paul McCartney providing the music, and tonight we get Sir Elton John not only doing the music (with Leon Russell) but taking on the hosting gig as well. Having seen Elton John host "The Muppet Show" many years ago we know that he's up to the task, especially if "SNL" teams him with some puppets.

Zach Galifianakis is not only hosting "Saturday Night Live" for the second time this year--we like to think of it as "Saturday Night Live 2"--he's also reuniting with his "Hangover" costars for "The Hangover 2." It's like a year of sequels for Galifianakis which is something of a testament to the popularity of the work he's been doing in the past few years. As for the music, that will be provided by Jessie J, who apparently isn't the person that was, at one time, married to Sandra Bullock. Although, we would love to see that Jesse and Jessiel get together. It would be confusing, but a cool sort of confusing.

We don't want to get into the whys and wherefores, but Miley Cyrus won't be playing both host and musical guest this week. We know that some people do get to be both host and musical guest and we're not sure if Miley wasn't offered that and declined or not offered it at all, we can only report that Miley will only be the host, not the musical guest. That kind of breaks our heart, our achy-breaky heart, we just don't think it understands. Okay, that's her dad who sings that and it's kind of creepy that we're singing it about her, but let that slide and understand how it hurts us.

Russell Brand has several upcoming films in the works, but he's probably going to be promoting the upcoming animated feature, "Hop" this week. In the film, Brand plays the Easter Bunny (oh yes, it's true). Now, in our minds that means that the writers at "SNL" will in fact be sticking Brand into some sad-looking bunny suit so that he can do a little Easter Bunny shtick during the show. Who knows, maybe they'll recreate that "The Jeffersons" episode, the one with the guys in the bunny suits. Trust us, it's a classic.

It's always a little extra special when a former cast member returns to host the series, and tonight they've got a particularly good one with Dana Carvey doing the honors. Carvey may not have had the most successful post-"SNL" career when compared to other cast members, but for our money he's one of the funniest people to ever star on the show. Think of all the great characters he created, think of all the incredible impressions that he did. How could one man do so much great stuff on a single series? Could it be... SATAN?

Tell all your friends - even the ones whom you've decided to call your friends but don't really know - Jesse Eisenberg (Oscar nominated!) is going to be on "Saturday Night Live" this week. Isn't that the sort of thing that you just need to post to your Facebook wall and then post to the Facebook wall of all those people whose accounts you've been able to access due to lax security and privacy measures on the part of the social network? Here's what we suggest - create an event stating that you're watching it and inviting all your 'friends' to watch too. It's what Mark Zuckerberg would want.

We don't want to take anything away from Cee Lo, but couldn't Gwyneth have provided the music tonight as well? Doesn't she sing in her new movie? Didn't she just sing in "Glee?" Didn't she sing in "Duets" back in the day? Wouldn't it have been better promotion for "Country Strong" if she was singing tonight? Well, maybe it would have been too much. Maybe Cee Lo would have some choice words for us if we continued down this train of thought. Maybe we'll just leave well enough alone.

Jim Carrey, as we all know, is no stranger to sketch comedy. Outside of the fact that Carrey has previously hosted this particular show, we all remember the funny man from "In Living Color" back in the day. He was one of the more humorous guys on that series, which may be why his career has mushroomed since appearing on the FOX show. Well, Carrey is returning to sketch comedy tonight and we certainly look forward to watching the man stretch those comedic (and facial) muscles in studio 8H (plus in any digital shorts filmed outside of 8H).

Let's see here, Jeff Bridges is hosting "Saturday Night Live." One wonders if he has some sort of movie coming out this weekend that he might be promoting. Hmmm... we can't recall seeing any advertisements for any Jeff Bridges' movie. We simply can't recall being completely bombarded with images, trailers, hints, allegations, innuendos, and any possible form which the dissemination of information may take for the past two years for a movie that might star Jeff Bridges. He's not in "Yogi Bear." He wasn't in "Harry Potter." Oh, he's in that "TRON: Legacy" flick isn't he? Yeah, we didn't see a single ad for that, not one.

Oh Paul Rudd, you lovable goofball. Seriously, Paul, you probably got teased throughout your childhood about being a ruddy disaster or a ruddy failure. Well, you would have if you'd grown up either in England or next door to us (because we're unabashed Anglophiles). You probably did get teased about something though, most comedians apparently have. We can't say that we think teasing is good, but, let's face it, if teasing gave us the comic stylings and general goofy charm of Paul Rudd, it can't be all bad either, can it?

Tonight marks the third time at Mr. Robert De Niro will host "Saturday Night Live." For those of you who keep track, the first was in 2002 and the second in 2004. While certainly not the oldest individual to ever host the series, this week's appearance does put him within the top 10. The truth of the matter however is that numerically old or not, Robert De Niro ('Bobby D' as we like to call him, just not to his face because we're a little scared of the guy) is timeless. He is, as much as anyone, a filmic legend and we can't wait to see him make with they yucks yet again.

Raise your hand if you don't like Anne Hathaway. Come on now, raise it. Come on, do it. Oh please, put your hand down, you love Anne Hathaway. We love Anne Hathaway. Everyone loves Anne Hathaway. There is, perhaps, no one more lovable than Anne Hathaway. This incredibly lovable actress is going to be hosting the incredibly venerable late night sketch show known only as "Saturday Night Live" and/or "SNL" and/or "That Show on NBC on Saturday Nights at 11:30." Fun will be had, we promise you that.

Is there anything Scarlett Johansson can't do? She can be a superhero, she can be a regular old action hero, she can star in comedies, she can star in dramas, she can be in Woody Allen movies, she can turn all of our nightmares into the best dream we have ever had or could ever dream of having. Wait, that last one wasn't supposed to come out, why don't we change that to 'she can host a sketch comedy show that has been on the air far longer than anyone watching it has been alive.' Yup, that'll work better.

It wasn't even a year ago that Jon Hamm hosted "Saturday Night Live" for the second time, and he's already been invited back to do it again. Good for the Hamminator! Also, it's good for us because Hamm is fun, Hamm can ham it up. This is also the Halloween-themed "Saturday Night Live," or at least as Halloween themed as any episode of the show will be this season. And if those weren't enough reasons to watch this week, Rihanna will be the musical guest tonight. We hazard to say that we're in for a good evening of "SNL."

Is it just us, or is Emma Stone everywhere lately? The woman is everywhere. She's on the big screen, she's on the little screen, she's in our dreams just about every single night, she's everywhere. We're told that she's even going to play Mary Jane Watson in the "Spider-Man" reboot. Well, now she's going to be hosting "Saturday Night Live" as well. Everywhere, she's everywhere. We don't think that she particularly need the exposure "SNL" will bring, but then again, why would we not want to see her in more places? She's Emma Stone.

A sizable percentage of the population was wholly unaware of Jane Lynch until her Emmy Award-winning role on "Glee." That probably explains why Jane Lynch has not, until now, hosted "Saturday Night Live." Well, we've known Jane Lynch since well before her role on "Glee," and we're convinced that she can do more than be Sue Sylvester; we're convinced that she can do an excellent job here on "SNL." We're also convinced that she'll do at least one sketch that will mock her role on "Glee," but that's to be expected (and expected to be funny).

Semi-fresh (because it was over a month ago) from his three-peat Emmy win for outstanding actor in a drama from his role in "Breaking Bad," "Saturday Night Live" welcomes Bryan Cranston to studio 8H. That means that once again we'll get to see Cranston make with the funny. Cranston has certainly been successful doing that, so there's absolutely no reason to think he shouldn't be equally successful here at "SNL." Plus, he does have the current crop of comedians the show sports on something of a high from their season premiere a week ago. Get it, 'a high?' That's right, we can write jokes, too.

One might have thought that by the time this show got to its 36th season, the sketch comedy series would finally be ready for primetime. Yeah, that hasn't happened... except, of course, for when the show is on in primetime. When those specials occur everyone is apparently completely ready for primetime. We don't think being ready for 8-11 has anything to do with work ethic though - all these folks do work hard. So, what could it be then? Maybe the season premiere will give us some indication. Probably not, but maybe.

This episode has been a long time in the making - a ridiculously, insanely long time in the making. You might think that they only start writing an episode the week it airs, but this is the 35th season finale of the series. That means that this episode has been 35 years in the making. Chevy Chase, Dan Aykroyd, Eddie Murphy, Julia Louis-Dreyfus, Jan Hooks, everyone who has ever been on the show has, in some way, been involved in the creation of this finale. Oh of course they have, "SNL" would not be where it is today if not for those who have been a part of the series in the past.

We don't quite know when the whole "we want Betty White to host 'SNL'" thing started, but start it did. In fact, truth be told, it did more than just start, it built up a head of steam, was commented on by Betty White herself, and someone at "SNL" heard the roar and responded. Betty White is going to host "Saturday Night Live." Frankly, it's awesome. We don't know quite why it's awesome, but it's undeniably awesome. If you only watch one episode of the show this season, make it this one.

Gabourey Sidibe - the star whose name is as much fun to say as she is to watch, is hosting "Saturday Night Live" this weekend. Frankly, we think her appearance here will be precious, just completely precious (but not based on the novel "Push" by Sapphire). Performing on the show this evening will be the group MGMT. Don't pretend like you don't know MGMT, they were nominated for a 2010 Grammy Award for Best New Artist, and they're about to release their second album. Raise your hand if you're looking forward to the "MacGruber" movie. Oh come on, you have so heard of it. The Will Forte sketch character has been given his own big screen flick this summer (think "Wayne's World"). If you've been looking into the movie you know that besides "SNL" stars Forte and Kristen Wiig, Ryan Phillippe will also be appearing in the film. Consequently, Phillippe will be appearing tonight on "Saturday Night Live," because the show is nothing if not stellar at cross-promotion. Watch Phillippe, laugh, and prepare for the upcoming release of "MacGruber."

Okay, you're going to find this one a little odd, so brace yourself. Ready? Here we go... Tina Fey is no longer on "Saturday Night Live." We know, she used to be the head writer and appear in the show, but that's no longer the case, she no longer stars on the show. We know, we know, it feels like she's still there every week, and that's because she is in fact there a whole lot, she does not, however, star on the show anymore. We'll guarantee her appearance again this week as she's hosting. Oh yes, and Justin Bieber will be the musical guest.

We're Jammin' - To think that Jammin' was a thing of the past; We're Jammin', And I hope this Jam is gonna last. Wait a minute, that song might use one of the two words in Pearl Jam's name a whole lot, but it's not actually about the band (which is making its fourth "SNL" appearance), is it? Our entire understanding of the world just began to crumble. Promise us this at least - that Beatles song, the one that suggests taking a sad song and making it better, that's a love letter to Law, right?

You can't necessarily pronounce his name, but you know his face - Zach Galifianakis. The funny man from "The Hangover" and the upcoming film "Due Date" is going to be hosting the venerable sketch show this week. Well, not so much this week as this weekend. After all, if this was the week and not the weekend there would be two main differences for the show - 1) it couldn't be called "Saturday Night Live" and 2) the musical guest would have to change their name to Vampire Week, either that or they'd just stay asleep in their coffins and not sing.

Jennifer Lopez, star of stage and screen, will be in studio 8H tonight making with the funny and singing a couple of songs. That's right, she's going to be the host and the musical guest. We think she'll be able to handle both roles with aplomb and not just because - if our math is right - this will be her second time hosting and third time as the musical guest. Her first time hosting was her second time as the musical guest as her first musical guest appearance featured Alan Cumming as the host. That's right, we're a veritable font of "SNL" trivia. You may be impressed now.

Ashton Kutcher will be hosting the show for a third time this week. We are mightily pleased that Kutcher will be taking time away from his tweeting and allowing pictures to be snapped of himself on a digital camera to return to studio 8H. Of course, it is hypothetically possible that Kutcher will spend the majority of the show tweeting about how everyone should be watching him on the show, but we don't imagine the writers will let him get away with that. Maybe he'll tweet as Them Crooked Vultures perform, but not when he's actually supposed to be making with the funny.

Last time out on "Saturday Night Live," Jon Hamm, star of "Mad Men," made some folks laugh, and he's coming back to do it again. You could argue - and you certainly wouldn't be wrong in doing so - that Hamm hammed it up quite well. This time, he'll be hosting as Michael Bublé performs. The fact that Bublé does some old-school crooning and Hamm stars on an old-school show almost certainly will lead to some sort of old-school funny, which is a pretty good thing on this long-running but never old sketch comedy show.

Some may call this the year 2010, but watching tonight's "SNL," you may mistakenly think it's 1986. That is right, fresh from her appearance in a blockbuster James Cameron film, Sigourney Weaver will be hosting "Saturday Night Live." As far as we're able to discern, the last time Weaver hosted "SNL" was a few months after she appeared in another Cameron film that was filled with aliens (perhaps you remember it, it was called "Aliens"), and that was back in 1986. We do fully expect the jokes to be newer than that however.

Charles Barkley is going to be guest hosting this first "Saturday Night Live" of the new year, with Alicia Keys providing the music. Well, she's going to be providing the music for her two songs, we fully expect the regular band to provide the rest of the music. In the end, as long as Charles Barkley doesn't provide the music it will probably all work out. Barkley is going to be there to make people laugh and the man certainly has a great sense of humor. Have you seen him swing a golf club? He couldn't do that if he didn't have a great sense of humor.

We are well into the fall now, but that doesn't mean we can't think back on "(500) Days of Summer." Ah Summer, we remember those bygone days with fondness. Enough strolling down memory lane, Gordon-Levitt returns to NBC tonight to host "Saturday Night Live." We also think you've probably heard of the musical guest this week, Dave Matthews Band.
