As you're undoubtedly aware, many a cable network opts to split in half seasons of their various original series.  Sometimes this makes one season end one week and the next season start a week later.  Sometimes this ends up with seasons dragging out for well over a year, and other times it's just gone for several months before returning.  The upshot of all this is that it can be difficult to tell exactly what season it is for a show you're watching.  Well, trust us when we tell you that the green screen-loving "Sancutary" is ending its third season tonight.  The series will be back for a fourth go round, but we can't yet say quite when.

As is our wont, we regularly read the titles to TV episodes and decide what they're about based upon nothing more (essentially) than our whims.  This, the final episode of the fourth season of "Sanctuary," is entitled 'Sanctuary for None - Part 2' which we imagine means that there will be no more sanctuaries (the place within the show, not the show) for 'Abnormals' to go to and, instead, those who used to run the sanctuary will be sent out to hunt down the Abnormals and kill them.  Okay, that would be a departure for the show, but we think it might be a good one.

The Hollow Earth refugees have arrived on the regular old Earth and things are going to change this season on "Sanctuary."  Of course, as you're probably well aware, things change every single season on "Sanctuary."  Will these changes somehow be greater than those changes?  That we can't tell you.  All we can do is hope against hope that the show hasn't abandoned its heavy reliance on green screen technology -- the series simply wouldn't have the same flavor if they increased their reliance on real sets.

In the world of "Sancutary," anything can happen.  It is a land populated with mutant creatures with special abilities as well as vampires and really smart folks.  In "Sanctuary" you can go just about anywhere you want to go without ever leaving your room.  Well, without ever really leaving one of the main sets, and that's because oh-so-much of the show is done with what appears to be green screen technology which makes it stupendously easy to be wherever you want to be... as long as you don't mind climate controlled in-studio weather wherever you are.

Is that a green screen behind you or are you just happy to see us?  No, seriously, we love to watch "Sanctuary," we're just constantly amazed by the amount of green screen that they use and how they tend to light things in funny ways for the screen.  We'd actually love to see them build some of the sets for real that they've digitally constructed, but it would probably exceed their budget.  Not that green screens are cheap, but my goodness some of those buildings are impressive and impressively large.  And, honestly, we wouldn't eliminate the Syfy show's use of green screen - it makes it what it is.

Wow has it been a long time since the last new episode of "Sanctuary" aired.  We really hope that before the new season they do one of those cutesy everything-you-need-to-know-in-five-minutes things, otherwise we'll never know what it is we need to know other than the fact that Helen Magnus has freaky powers, ridiculous smarts, and wants to help protect mutants from the world at large.  Yes, that's probably a solid framework on which to build, but we don't quite feel like it's enough, especially with all the mythology the show has put forward.  Recap or not though, we can't wait to see once more the incredible use of green screen technology the show employs.

Over a mere two seasons, the Syfy original series "Sanctuary" has managed to create for itself an incredibly intricate mythology.  In a nutshell... nope, never mind, you can't really 'in a nutshell' "Sanctuary."  We can however tell you that in the world of "Sanctuary" there are normal folks and there are mutants (called 'Abnormals').  There are also the good guys who run the Sanctuary which helps the Abnormals and the bad guys called the 'Cabal.'  There is a lot of killing, a lot of saving of all life on the planet, and Jack the Ripper makes the occasional appearance.  You're sold now, aren't you?
