Perhaps it is time to admit it, the summer is soon drawing to a close. We know this, in part, because summer series "Rookie Blue" is ending its season tonight. And, we have a fear -- we fear that the summer is ending more quickly than anyone realized because "Rookie Blue" is ending the season with back-to-back episodes as opposed to spreading them out over two separate weeks. It is as though they know something we do not. Tune in and find out what happens in the, we hope, explosive finale.

This series is entitled, as you are well aware (and as we've said previously), "Rookie Blue." Of course, it's the fifth season of the show and some of the folks we saw originally aren't rookies any more (we know we've spoken of this as well). Well perhaps to fix that, two new characters are going to come in tonight and even if they aren't rookies in the department (one is), they are rookies on the series. Watch and see how the dynamic alters tonight.

Next summer (presumably), "Rookie Blue" will return with another batch of new episodes. Well, it isn't presumed that "Rookie Blue" will return, the series has already been renewed for a fifth season, it is just presumed that it will air next summer (we presume this because all seasons of "Rookie Blue" have aired in the summer). We wonder if they had knowledge of that renewal prior to the writing/filming of the final episode this season -- were they able to use that in the script in a way to create a more exciting ending?

Starting tonight and, allegedly, running for 13 weeks straight is the fourth season of "Rookie Blue." Now, when we say allegedly, what we mean is that the show is, should nothing weird happen, going to air a new episode every single week from tonight through the 12th of September. That really is pretty good, isn't it? It is something you can count on this summer -- Thursday nights, "Rookie Blue" will be there. It will be there like a rookie cop hot on the trail of a bad guy even if the rookie cop is now in their fourth year on the job and not so much a rookie anymore.

Before you get too choked up about "Rookie Blue" coming to an end, we'd like to point out that it isn't really. The third season is coming to an end, to be sure, but that doesn't mean the whole series is ending. Your favorite cops on the beat (if these cops on the beat are your favorite cops on the beat) will be back with a fourth season next summer. We hope that by then the rename the show "Senior Blue" or "Veteran Blue," but we kind of doubt it, Canadians tend to be very nice and suggesting someone is getting old isn't nice.

We said it last year, and we'll say it this year (we kind of find it inescapable, and in fact far more true this season) -- how is it that this is still "Rookie Blue" when it's no longer the rookies' first year? Don't give us that old 'well, they can keep adding more new cops' thing. Even when they do, the show still focuses on, as the description states the rookies who, after two years on the job, 'are well on their way to becoming experienced cops.' Don't get us wrong, we're not hating on the show (we hate on nothing that involves Missy Peregrym), we just don't understand the title.

"Rookie Blue" is the tale of new cops, rookies (hence the name). It really makes us wonder though how they can have a second season because those who were rookies in the first aren't so much going to be rookies now. The plan doesn't seem to jettison the whole cast and start with a new group of rookies, but rather to continue with the previously established group. Perchance they're going to opt to have season two's tales begin right after those in season one took place. That would certainly help, but they still can't remain rookies forever, can they?
