Pretty Little Liars

There is a fear with some shows that any cliffhanger season finale won't get resolved as the show may not return for another season. That is not the sort of fear you need to harbor tonight, "Pretty Little Liars" has been renewed for season two. In fact, having that second season already guaranteed makes us hope that we get a truly extreme cliffhanger finale, something that really ups the ante. We're not sure what they would be, but we're not the producers so we need not worry about such things, we merely need to sit back, relax, and enjoy.

Aria, Emily, Hanna, and Spencer are going to be spending this holiday special trying to clear Spencer's name. They may just get that chance when an "opportunity presents itself." Will they be able to get back at Alison? Will they have a Merry Christmas? And, perhaps most importantly, just how does Alison's visit by a ghostly presence tonight relate to it all? Well, we call that one most important because we like "A Christmas Carol," and this sounds potentially similar.

Rather than giving us a traditional Halloween spooky episode tonight, instead, we're getting a special called "I Love you to DeAth," what with that capital "A" and all because there's a killer on the show known only as A (but you knew that). You will see on tonight's episode that one of the stars says she knows who A is, but others claim that they have no knowledge whatsoever. We aren't sure how that conversation is going to play out, but we are curious. Other things we'll learn tonight is what, exactly, scares the cast the most.

Okay, as you well remember (because you're a massive fan), season four ended with something of a cliffhanger, and that's awesome because tonight, season five begins, it's going to pick up right after the end of season four. We hope that means that it won't take terribly long for us all to find out where things stand (because we're a massive fan). The young women think that they're really not all that far from figuring it all out. Let's see if they're right.

We haven't always been the biggest fan of Halloween (it stems from the horrible shaving cream incident of 198-), but "Pretty Little Liars" is slowly but surely changing our mind. Our heroes (the little liars who are less little every year) are going to be in Ravenswood for the Founders Day Celebration and dealing with, as per usual, good old "A." They are there to follow some clues about Ali and the truth in regards to what happened, but they're also going to be in Ravenswood because immediately following the Halloween special is the premiere of "Pretty Little Liars" spinoff, "Ravenswood."

Being pretty and little only, apparently, gets you so far. The liars of "Pretty Little Liars" may, as we just said, be pretty and little (and liars), but that can't stop this from being the end of their summer season. After tonight, the show will go away for a while. We are assuming a return for a Halloween episode, but all we are going to say with 100% certainty at this point is that the half-season ends today. We are relatively certain that it will end with a bombshell/cliffhanger/OMG moment, but we can't say we're positive about that.

Now, as you are undoubtedly aware, ABC Family has ordered a spinoff of "Pretty Little Liars," and there is good reason for that. "Pretty Little Liars," you see, is popular. People like it. People like the pretty. People like the little. People like the liars. People like all of it in one big package. If you yourself haven't given it a shot yet, probably you should, it's about time, and with the new season starting tonight and the introduction of the spinoff coming in the fall, this really does seem like the perfect moment.

Is it better if liars are pretty? Does that add to their lying cachet or in any way influence how one feels about being lied to? It might, it just might. We aren't sure that the above question is the main one that "Pretty Little Liars" sets out to answer, but it is unquestionably one upon which you can focus during an episode. We think that the show does have things to say about the worth of a lie from a 'pretty' individual as opposed to a lie from a 'non-pretty' individual. 'A' probably has some things to say about the issue as well. Of course, 'A' has a lot of issues (like being a blackmailer and some other not so nice things) so they might not be the best judge.

We all know the rules to horror movies, and one of the chief rules (even if it was never stated in "Scream") is that you don't muck about on Halloween. No matter how 'out of the woods' you think you are with the sadistic psychopath who has been ruining your life, you stay home on Halloween. Apparently Aria, Emily, Hanna, and Spencer are too young to have studied up on the horror rules because they're boarding the Rosewood Ghost Train tonight. Yeah, things aren't going to go well for them, even if they do get to see Adam Lambert perform two songs (Lambert will in fact be doing just that).

Did you realize that "Pretty Little Liars" won the People's Choice Award for 'Choice Cable TV Drama?' No? Well, guess what? "Pretty Little Liars" did in fact win that award. And, that was just in its second season, with the starting of the pretty and the beginning of the lies. Now, the pretty has deepened, the lies have grown, and we're just not sure where things may be headed in the future. We are, however, pushing for a move to beautiful and a 10 on the Nixon Scale (that's a log scale like the Richter scale, but it's lie-based). We expect that tonight's summer finale will feature just that sort of lying and/or scandal.

We have it on good authority that on tonight's second season finale of "Pretty Little Liars," 'A' will be revealed. That is right, a little birdie told us that by the end of tonight's episode we're going to know the identity of 'A.' How do we get to know such things? Who is it that tells us these tidbits? Actually, it's in the press release for the episode. What we want to know now (besides the identity, naturally) is where the show is going to head from here. We don't imagine that they're going to want to stop the whole mystery thing and are excited to see how they're going to morph it.

Oh man, what can we say about this show and the characters who are in it? Well, quite obviously, they're pretty, they're little, and they're liars. They have also been renewed for a third season despite the fact that the second season hasn't even begun its second half. That's all good, right? Is there any bad? Well, if you consider the fact that the extension of the show probably means that all the various intricacies of the mystery won't be solved this year, yeah, maybe there is some bad. But, then again, is that really bad? "Burn Notice" has been hugely successful and truly interesting (at times) stringing out their plot, why not this show, too?

The first rule of fight club, as we all know, is that there is no fight club. There are good reasons for that just like there are good reasons for not telling anyone about 'A.' If you talk about 'A' to people who don't know 'A' they're gonna be all like 'Hey, "A," who is that Tell me about this 'A' fellow. What's he like?' That's only going to lead to more questions and to 'A' getting rather angry. We have rules for a reason, people, without rules there is chaos and with chaos there is nothing but total and complete disaster. Watch the season finale, you'll see what's what and why there is no fight club.

We have been informed that the girls are going to be seeking out some help tonight on the second season premiere and that said help apparently deals with them talking to a therapist. While we are certainly all for the talking out of one's problems with professionals, we do kind of feel as though the girls here may need slightly more help than what a therapist has to offer. Tell us we're wrong. Go ahead and try. You can't can you (although if you yourself are a pretty little liar maybe you could).
