Ah, Portland. With your Port, with your land, with your -ia, and quite possible with your -ians (that's right, yes, Portlandians?) you have found your way into our heart. Oh, even if this series does a whole lot of humorous bits, we have come to believe that there's a certain underlying truth about the city being told. Yes, perhaps a portion of that is the show's appearing on IFC, and the sort of off-kilter humor the network puts out, but maybe, Portland, just maybe, the show is on IFC because it fits with your general ethos and not because said ethos has been altered for IFC-flavored comic intent.

Well, they said it couldn't last forever, and they were right. Actually, we might have said it couldn't last forever and we were right, but that's not really the point. No, the point is that tonight is the 10th and final episode in the fourth season of "Portlandia." The show will be back with at least 10 more episodes in the future, but for now, you must bid adieu to the lovable weirdos on the series. Might we suggest, if you're truly desperate for more, that you plan a trip to Portland in the near future to see how well it gels with what happens on the show?

We aren't going to say that there won't be basketball tonight on "Portlandia," heck there very well may be. but, we promise you this -- if there is basketball tonight on "Portlandia" it will be an ironic sort of basketball, not an earnest sort. So, if NCAA basketball isn't your thing, then we highly recommend giving "Portlandia" a shot tonight, we promise that the only sort of madness you'll get here is the kind inspired by hipsters.

Tonight we get the first episode of the fourth season of "Portlandia." You may ask yourself why that's so important and there really is no easy answer to the question. It has something to do with the knowledge that after this there will be a fifth season and something to do with the knowledge that a certain bit of levity will be added to our television screens tonight, a levity that is otherwise missing. Watch as we explore the ins and outs and oddities of Portland tonight.

In our flyover description of "Portlandia," we noted that season three is going to 'draw' to a close today. We carefully chose that word because the series draws such colorful characters, draws such great situations, draws such colorful pictures. Okay, yes, it's true, most folks would use 'paints such colorful pictures,' but that doesn't work because it would have forced us to use 'paints to a close today' and we don't like that. Did we draw ourselves into a corner here? Yes, well, maybe we did, but maybe we'll start folks thinking about things in a whole new way -- just like "Portlandia" makes us think about things in a new way.

What is "Portlandia?" Well, it's a state of mind, isn't it? Technically speaking, it's a state of mind in which people, lovingly, make fun of the city of Portland. And, by people, we mean Carrie Brownstein and Fred Armisen in particular. Brownstein and Armisen are the stars of the series, which does feature guest appearances by many a notable actor and actress. Not only do we love the show for its humor, but we also love it because it's convinced us fully that we never need to go to Portland, and that's one thing less on our bucket list.

The third season of comedy "Portlandia" is scheduled to begin on IFC at the beginning of January, and while that is still winter, the nice folks over at "Portlandia" are giving us a winter-based special prior to said winter premiere. It could be that we're getting the special because when "Portlandia" opens it won't actually be winter on the series (due to filming constraints), or it could be that it will be winter there (despite filming constraints). Honestly, it doesn't matter to us, we choose to believe that we're getting this "Winter in Portlandia" special as a holiday gift, one wrapped up in a nice big bow. We intend to receive it in that manner.

It seems as though, and if you're from Portland please feel free to correct us if this happens to be untrue, that Portland is full of some truly weird individuals. We understand for the sake of comedy, people will sometimes stretch the truth, but even if things have been exceedingly stretched here, folks from Portland could be terribly odd. This series stars Fred Armisen and Carrie Brownstein, but is going to have a whole bunch of guest stars in season two, folks like Kyle MacLachlan, Penny Marshall, Tim Robbins, Andy Samberg, Kristen Wiig, and even Isaac Brock and Steve Jones. Watch and laugh, watch and laugh.
