TV Network - ABC

Oh thank goodness -- over the course of the past month, the past new "Modern Family" free month, we've spent just about all the time we can take with our own 'modern' family.  We desperately need the return of this series so that we can once again actually laugh and enjoy the pleaseures that family brings because, as indicated, we've kind of forgotten what those might be.  Don't fail us now, Manny, have some ridiculous 1960s thing going on tonight.  Claire, if you could stress out about something insane in your neighborhood (the color of your neighbor's roof?) we'd love it.  Cam, surely there's some tale of your childhood back home we haven't heard yet (did you once ride a donkey backwards in a parade while you had a rooster on your head?).  You all know what we need -- now deliver.

There are certain things we just love, and "Modern Family" is one of them.  Why?  Well, because it's funny and because it makes us feel better about the people we live with and it's just plain funny.  Have you been watching this season?  The way they've advanced the relationship between Luke and Phil is just great -- Luke is coming into his own and doesn't always want his dad around or to follow his dad's goofy plans.  We can't say if that relationship will be front and center tonight.  Actually, it probably won't be, this is the season finale, and we hear wedding bells.

Oh sure, at this moment you think you're in the sweet spot, you think you've got oodles and oodles of time before the television season ends.  We're here to tell you just how wrong you are -- the season finales aren't far off, there are only a few more weeks of merriment left to you before it all comes crashing down around your ears.  The wedding between Cam & Mitch is just a few short weeks away and we learn tonight that the whole thing has gotten more expensive than Mitch and Cam ever expected that it would.  They thought they were in the sweet spot, too.

The whole family is going to Australia tonight and that means that they're going to need a guest star or two.  In this case, the lead guest star is Rhys Darby, whom you may have seen on "Flight of the Conchords."  Of course, Darby was born in New Zealand, just as was his character on "Flight" (if we remember correctly).  We wonder if that will be an issue here on the show or if they'll simply say he's from Australia and move on.  Tune in and find out.

As they told us at the beginning of this season of "Modern Family," they will be ending the year with a wedding between Cam and Mitch.  We aren't there yet, but we're getting closer, oh-so-much closer.  Tonight is, if we're counting correctly, the 15th episode of the season and if they're doing something between 22 and 24 episodes this year, well, you get the picture -- you can almost hear the wedding bells.  Plus, Adam DeVine returns tonight as the other manny (not Manny, but the manny), and he's one funny fellow.

There are certain things in this world which make us happy.  These include the little things like the Patriots not winning the Super Bowl, dogs and cats playing together joyfully, and new episodes of "Modern Family.  Quite obviously, we can't have everything, but we have done pretty well as of late and a new episode of "Modern Family" tonight will be like icing on the cake or a feather in our cap, or a bowlful of well-earned laughs.  Yes, that last one feels most accurate, we'll go with that.

You know Adam DeVine, he's the new nanny on "Modern Family."  Or, if you prefer, he's the new manny, but not the new Manny, because the old Manny wouldn't like there being a new Manny and, last we checked, the jury was still out on whether Manny liked the manny in the first place.  But, let us not focus on that, let us instead tell you that Haley will be meeting the manny for the first time tonight (not the Manny, Haley has met the Manny many times).  It will be, we surmise, an interesting encounter.

Wow, here we are, the fifth season of "Modern Family."  It isn't that time is going quickly, it's that we're getting old.  We remember when this was the brand-new show on the block and part of ABC's new Wednesday night comedy block.  Said comedy block is heading into its fifth year and both "The Middle" and "Modern Family" are still here to tell about it.  The new season of "Family" starts off with back-to-back episodes tonight and that should be enjoyable and funny (we really care about the funny).

It has been a weird, wild, wacky, wonderful season of "Modern Family."  From births to new houses to getting booted out of college to umpteen other things, it feels as though just about every week there is something new and funny happening on "Modern Family."  If we had to choose our favorite moment from this season, it would be.... tonight.  It would be tonight because tonight's episode hasn't aired yet and it's the last new one we're going to get until the fall.  As of this moment, we can still look forward to seeing the episode as opposed to having it in the rearview mirror.

We don't recall ever having seen one of Mitch's ex-boyfriends before on "Modern Family," but we have always been sure that Mitch has at least one (but probably more) serious ex-boyfriends out there.  Tonight, we're going meet one of them, Teddy.  Teddy is kind of a successful doctor who invites the whole family to a fundraiser.  One imagines that Cameron is not going to be okay with this whole thing.  That is going to be exceptionally fun to watch.  You know it is, so tune in and see the shenanigans.

Tonight's episode of "Modern Family" will see the return of Benjamin Bratt as Javier, Manny's father and Gloria's ex.  We imagine that he'll have an awful lot to say about the newest addition to the family of "Modern Family."  We further assume that he won't be wanting Gloria back as the listing for the episode states that Paget Brewster is going to be playing Javier's girlfriend.  Of course, that does make us wonder if there's going to be some sort of reverse thing going on where Gloria worries about what she's missing out on.

Yes, we said it in the flyover description, this is your favorite family.  We don't mean that you love them more than you love your real family, just that these people are your favorite family -- they're certainly our favorite family.  For example, on this show a newborn crying is funny, but a newborn crying in our home is a stressful, awful experience.  It is the "Modern Family" family that help us over that Wednesday hump, that help us move from Wednseday to Thursday with love and laughter.  You have watched the show before, it's helped you get over that hump before and just may again this week -- we know it'll help us.

We have seen Nathan Lane on Broadway and we have seen Nathan Lane on the big screen.  And, while we haven't seen Lane in person, we have seen him in our home on "Modern Family."  Nathan Lane plays Barry Pepper, a friend of Cam and Mitchell's.  He will be returning tonight and we will be laughing when he's on screen.  We will also be laughing at the return of Fred Willard (Frank Dunphy, if you will), because he is returning and he is quite funny.  So, to recap, two great returning stars tonight on "Modern Family," which means two extra reasons to watch.

The November Sweeps are over, the season opening spate of episodes has come and gone, and the February Sweep is far off in the future.  We are in the doldrums.  There really aren't all that many new episodes between the end of November and January (i.e., the month of December), but tonight, tonight is one of those rare new episodes of episodic television.  We suggest you celebrate, and we certainly suggest you watch.  It is our hope that the entire "Modern Family" clan is packing all the funny they have for the entire month into this episode.

Matthew Broderick will be on "Modern Family" tonight and, as we would have done were we casting and generally organizing things, his plot is apparently going to revolve around Phil.  Apparently both Broderick's character and Phil are both Bulldog alums.  Looking at the episode description, it doesn't seem as though they knew each other back in the day, but they'll be together now nonetheless.  Listen, other things are going to happen too, but we'll be focusing on Broderick.  Well, Broderick and Claire.  We kind of have a thing for Claire.

Over on FOX, you have the opportunity to watch the first game of the World Series -- go Yankees (we say that whether or not the Yanks have made it to Series).  But, there are those out there who would suggest that MLB and the World Series are relics of the 20th Century, that they aren't 'modern' enough.  To such people we would like to offer the alternate viewing choice of "Modern Family," which has the word 'modern' in the very title so you know that it's for people today.  The comedy regularly proves totally and completely funny and we see absolutely no reason why tonight's episode shouldn't as well.

There was this moment back at the end of July where things were getting a little testy between the adult stars of "Modern Family" and the production company (not ABC, but clearly the network had a stake in the outcome).  It was a question of many things (money), and there was some fear that the show may not start on time this season.  None of those dire predictions have come to pass.  Everything has been settled and everyone appears happy.  Because of that, they can now make us happy.  So, "Modern Family," bring the funny, we're ready.

We would say that we try to imagine who we are on "Modern Family," but that's not true, we don't have to imagine -- we're pretty much Phil Dunphy.  In fact, if you crossed Phil with a little bit of Kenneth from "30 Rock," you'd have us almost exactly.  Stop laughing, that's actually a good thing -- don't you love Phil & Kenneth?  Of course you do.  But, Kenneth isn't here, just Phil and Claire... and we wouldn't mind being married to Claire, no matter how bossy she might be.

In any case, here's what we promise you for the finale -- shenanigans.  Lots and lots of shenanigans.

Barry Corbin is just one of those guys.  The man has been around a long time and been in a lot of stuff, IMDB reports that he was born in 1940 and give his first credited role as being in 1970.  He first came to our attention for his role on "Northern Exposure," although he was on "Dallas," "Boone," and "The Thornbirds" before that (just to name a few).  Gamers may even know him from "Command & Conquer: Red Alert 2."  Tonight though, he'll be on "Modern Family" as Merle Tucker.  Yes, that's right, good remembering, Cam's last name is indeed 'Tucker.'  Hmmm....

We love ourselves some Greg Kinnear.  We are not entirely sure why that is, it could be his unassuming good looks, it could be his acting ability, and it could just be that he's Greg Kinnear (seriously, he is Greg Kinnear), but whatever the reason may be that we love him, you can bet that we'll be tuning in to his appearance on "Modern Family" tonight.  Kinnear will be appearing as one of Phil's new business partners, and Phil will be doing everything he can to impress Tad (Tad being Kinnear).  Yeah, that's not going to go well and we can't wait to see how it goes poorly.  That Phil, he's a kook.

In case you haven't noticed, many of your favorite television shows are returning after (somewhere around) a month's hiatus.  Forget the now-past holidays, the return of regularly scheduled programming truly makes this the season to remember.  Amongst the returning shows this evening is "Modern Family," which, we are not afraid to admit, is one of our favorite sitcoms.  We are, therefore, even more excited about the show's return than we otherwise might be.  We are so excited that we might, just might, try to recreate the dance that Phil did during the series premiere.  We love that dance (and now that we've practiced we're quite good at it).

People, there are very few things about which we will bounce up and own in our seat, but one of those things is Punkin Chunkin (see tomorrow's "Must Watch" list).  Tonight's episode of "Modern Family" is in fact entitled 'Punkin Chunkin,' and that is all we know about it.  Our assumption is that Phil has decided to chunkin a punkin further than any punkin has ever been chunkined before and we can't wait to see that.  In fact, the truth is that no matter who discusses Punkin Chunkin here tonight, we're going to be happy (and even more happy if we see a punkin get chunkined).

Well, as long as they don't delve into the milk incident, it'll probably work out very well indeed.

We are going to miss the kooky characters on this series when new episodes magically, and regrettably, disappear for several months after tonight's season finale.  There is just something so wonderfully impressive and wholesome about how they all manage to put up with Phil without killing the guy.  And, it really is a bonus that they don't, because we're pretty much Phil and it would hurt us to see our proxy on the show meet an untimely end.
