Men of a Certain Age

We are not the biggest fan of splitting a relatively short season of a television series, especially when we really like the series. We've gotten the final six episodes of a 12 episode season of "Men of a Certain Age" over the past month and a half, and while we love what we've watched, we just don't feel as though we've watched enough. We want more of these men who are of an unspecified age. We want to know more of their stories, more of their lives, more of their hopes and of their dreams Oh sure, they could be back for a new season, but we want more of them now.

As you are aware (we're fairly certain you're aware anyway), "Men of a Certain Age" stars Ray Romano, Scott Bakula, and Andre Braugher as three slightly-beyond-middle-age guys who are not yet senior citizens trying to make their way through the world. They have the struggles you may expect that they would have (and some which you wouldn't). While they're serious struggles for the the three men involved, we can all take solace from the fact that they are not our struggles and just sit back and relax as they unfold (and if they are similar to ones you may face, you can grab pointers from the series).

Yes, this is only the sixth episode of the second season, but that doesn't mean that these men of a certain age can't go away for a little while to rest up. Think about it - these guys are getting kind of old, being of that certain age and all, they need their rest, they need to regain their strength. Quite frankly, that's true for everyone, but it's even more true for these three clowns who can't seem to figure out just how to get their lives in order. Have you watched the shenanigans that they get up to? You would think that they would know better (being of a certain age and all). We're a little surprised they got through six episodes without needing to take a break.

Here is what we don't understand (about this show anyway) - if these guys were of a certain age last year, shouldn't they now be of a certain age plus one? How can they still be men of a certain age when they're no longer that age anymore? It just doesn't make any sense. Is it some sort of Sam Beckett-"Quantum Leap" thing going on where he's leaping into lives but not aging? See, that wouldn't even make any sense either because Sam Beckett did age after stepping into the accelerator, he was all amazed when he finally saw his own face again and noticed the crow's feet. Remember? Yeah, we loved that show.

On tonight's season finale of "Men of a Certain Age," the men in question realize that they're no longer actually of said 'certain age.' They are now of said certain age plus 10 episodes.
We jest. The certain age that they men are is in fact 'middle' which means that whatever disaster or calamity or joyous occasion happens tonight, the men will still be able to come back next season and still be the same certain age that they are now. And yes, there will be a season two.

Three college buds who graduated long ago do their best to remain friends as life throws up many an obstacle in this new series. The show may put forth the notion that these guys are only entering middle-age even though they're in their late 40s, but if you can forgive them that, you might just have a good time watching them discuss the creaks and wrinkles that come with getting older. The series is executive produced and written by Romano, his first regularly scheduled series since "Everybody Loves Raymond" ended its run.
