William Masters and Virginia Johnson helped pioneer the science of human sexuality.  It is a titillating (no pun intended) notion for a television series to explore, particularly one on cable where they can discuss things in a somewhat more frank manner.  "Masters of Sex" is adapted from the book by Thomas Maier "Masters of Sex: The Life and Times of William Masters and Virginia Johnson, The Couple who Taught America how to Love."  Tonight may be a busy night of TV, but perhaps you could spare an hour of it for... love.  Michael Sheen and Lizzy Caplan star.

By the end of September, we will be speaking of this second season of "Masters of Sex" in the past tense.  There will be a whole lot of discussions about what took place, what happened, where things went.  You see?  All in the past tense.  Don't let that moment arrive with your having missed an episode.  There is not very much more left this season.  Do not let it, like a loving marriage, wither and die on the vine from having gone untended.  Nuture it, care for it, show it that the relationship means something.

This has been quite the season for "Masters of Sex," has it not?  The show has advanced in interesting ways, explored new and different things, and generally advanced the plot in ways that we have enjoyed watching unfolded.  Are there potential criticisms which could be levied at it?  Yes, of course, there always are such moments.  Rather than focus on that small, negative area, let us instead focus our attention on tonight's episode and see how they wrap things up.

Tonight marks the halfway point of this second season of "Masters of Sex."  Well, we'll be at the halfway point after this episode is finished airing anyway.  Technically, before this episode airs we're going to be just under the halfway point.  To this point in the second season, the show has managed to both deepen the characters and broaden the story, see if that all continues tonight.  And, be a little bit sad, because after tonight half the season is over.

For its second season, Showtime is moving "Masters of Sex" from the fall/early winter to the summer.  Only Showtime can tell you the exact reasons for that, but what we can tell you is this -- the second season of the show promises to expand upon the story of William Masters and Virginia Johnson and the pioneering work the two did in their field.  Not everything you see on the series will be exactly what happened in the real world, but it doesn't purport to be wholly true, and it is a cracking good tale.

Okay, yes, "Masters of Sex" absolutely has a name intended to cause snickering amongst a certain crowd.  What it has managed to do, as a series, however, is to create great dramatic television with a compelling storyline and excellent performances.  We fully expect this final episode of the season to pull no punches.  We also, although it shouldn't be necessary, will tell you that it is probably inappropriate material for a younger set.  It may not be the sort of family viewing you want, but that doesn't mean that consenting adults should miss out on it.

This Showtime series premiered to much fanfare and has been given the coveted post-"Homeland" timeslot.  Tonight is episode five which means things are in full swing and the general feel/tone of the show has made itself clear.  Heck, you've even gotten some time to try to figure out exactly who the characters are.  Do you like what you see?  Are you enjoying the run?  Showtime is offering a fresh episode tonight (and the halfway point in the series arrives with the conclusion of next week's episode), perhaps you want to give it another go.
