Masterchef
May 22, 2013
TV Network - FOX
In the past (or at least last year, but we feel as though it's been the case in other seasons as well), we have gotten "Masterchef" episodes on back-to-back nights. That isn't going to happen with this, the fourth season of the cooking competition show. Perhaps that is because it's starting far earlier in the year, perhaps it's because the show is going to end later, perhaps it's for other reasons, all we know for certain is that things are different this year... very different. If Joe Bastianich is nice this year, it really will be like we're watching a completely different series.

The first time we watched "Hell's Kitchen" we were under the impression that it was the sort of contest home cooks could win. It rapidly became apparent however that such is not the case -- you have to be a professional to win. Now though we have "Masterchef" which is a contest that only home cooks are allowed to enter. We love watching these folks do their thing. Honestly it makes us a little jealous that we can't cook like that, but it is still truly impressive seeing what these home cooks whip up.

We are now down to four contestants on "Masterchef" and that, quite happily, means that we have a whole lot more time for celebrity chefs. Tonight we get the incredible Daniel Boulud, Alain Ducasse, and Guy Savoy. We are actually salivating over the very thought which would be fine if we weren't sitting hunched over our keyboard and in great danger of shorting it out. Let us therefore close by saying that the "Masterchef" season is nearly complete and that even if there were no celebrity chefs tonight it would probably be a good idea to pay close attention to what's going on.

There is a phrase we like to use at moments like these, a phrase which we both regularly employ and totally enjoy -- nitty-gritty. We are getting down to the nitty-gritty on "Masterchef." This show's season is 20 episodes long and tonight is episode 15, which means that after tonight 75% of the season is gone. We have gone from hundreds of semi-finalists to a handful of real and true finalists to... well, a half-handful of people who might actually win and in a few weeks we'll see who will win. Or, put another way, we're down to the nitty-gritty.

We love "Masterchef," we may even love it more than we love "Hell's Kitchen" (and you know how much we love "Hell's Kitchen). The show features not just Ramsay yelling at people, but Graham Elliot and Joe Bastianich getting in on the action as well. The point here is for amateur cooks to compete as opposed to 'real' chefs. They'll be competing for the title of 'masterchef' and a cool quarter million dollars. Tonight though they'll just be competing to get a chance to really be in the competition -- these are just the prelims.

As a part of Gordon Ramsay's secret master plan to run all television networks during the summer, "Masterchef" has been airing not one but two nights a week. Well, perhaps Gordon didn't think things out fully because the show is ending tonight, merely halfway through August instead of running all the way up to Labor Day. We imagine that he'll have his diabolical plot perfected by next summer, but for now all we can do is highly recommend you watch tonight to see who wins "Masterchef."

As has become readily apparent through the years, "Hell's Kitchen," as much fun as it may be, is not about amateur chefs (there is always one or two present, but they have a tendency to not win). "Masterchef," on the other hand, is in fact solely focused on the amateurs. The whole point of the series is that amateurs compete. Gordon Ramsay ought to still be yelling at everyone, and let's face it, that's a huge reason to watch any of Ramsay's shows, but now he gets to get angry at amateurs instead of pros.
