Last year, from the first moment we saw him, we knew that Luca would walk home victorious. There was something wonderful about him as a chef and a contestant that simply made it clear. This year, while we have a favorite, we are a little less convinced that they will win... not a lot less, just a little. Tonight, we'll find out if our faith has been rewarded as tonight, with double episodes, the season of "Masterchef" draws to a close.

Tonight, "Masterchef" will begin back-to-back weeks with back-to-back episodes. Oh yes, two episodes tonight and then two episodes a gain next week. The only unfortunate thing is that the season will end with those two episodes next week. We will survive, however, as "Hell's Kitchen" returns this week and "Masterchef Junior" begins in November. It will be a struggle, but we will survive. As for tonight's episode -- expect the field to narrow further and for us to still have our favorite in play when the credits roll.

Next week and the week after, we're going to get back-to-back episodes of "Masterchef," episodes that will wind up closing out the season. This week then is the last single hour episode we'll get for the season. We are oh-so-rapidly approaching the season finale... oh-so-rapidly. Tune in tonight because this is your last chance to catch your breath.

Gordon Ramsay may not have as many shows on television as you think, particularly with his announcement a month ago that he was going to end "Kitchen Nightmares," but this will be the first week of the year with three separate Ramsay series all airing in the same week. That fun gets started tonight and with this episode of "Masterchef," which makes some sense as Ramsay works with two other personalities on it -- it eases him into the whole thing as he's alone on the other shows.

Here we are, episode five of "Masterchef" for the season and, if we're being honest, we've started to pick out some of the people we see as favorites to go long in this competition. We don't think that we know, precisely, who is going to win, but we do have some early favorites. We call them Gordon Ramsay, Joe Bastianich, and Graham Elliot. But, of those three, we do have say we may like Ramsay the best. There's just something about how he yells at people (although, Joe does do that brilliantly as well).

We think that last season of "Masterchef" was the best one yet, and not just because we picked the winner way back near the beginning of the season, but rather because the right person won and did so in interesting fashion. The show is all about amateur cooks competing in an attempt to prove that they truly are fantastic chefs -- and many of them, even those who don't win, really are. The judges are Gordon Ramsay, Joe Bastianich, and Graham Elliot. Watch and enjoy (preferably with something delectable).

We were wrong about who we picked to win this season of "Masterchef." Okay, yes, the odds were against our winning the competition (we picked ourselves) what with our not having applied and our having no clue about how to cook many of the things the contestants are required to cook, but we picked the underdog. Tonight, despite our choice not going to end up in the winner's circle, someone is going to take home the crown, and they will be truly excited for it. It has been quite the fun season on the amateur cooking competition show and we're excited to see how it concludes.

In the past (or at least last year, but we feel as though it's been the case in other seasons as well), we have gotten "Masterchef" episodes on back-to-back nights. That isn't going to happen with this, the fourth season of the cooking competition show. Perhaps that is because it's starting far earlier in the year, perhaps it's because the show is going to end later, perhaps it's for other reasons, all we know for certain is that things are different this year... very different. If Joe Bastianich is nice this year, it really will be like we're watching a completely different series.

The final six chefs remaining in the competition find themselves speechless when faced with the possibility of welcoming back a former foe; from a field of eight former competitors, two chefs cook head-to-head for a chance back in the kitchen.

The first time we watched "Hell's Kitchen" we were under the impression that it was the sort of contest home cooks could win. It rapidly became apparent however that such is not the case -- you have to be a professional to win. Now though we have "Masterchef" which is a contest that only home cooks are allowed to enter. We love watching these folks do their thing. Honestly it makes us a little jealous that we can't cook like that, but it is still truly impressive seeing what these home cooks whip up.

We are now down to four contestants on "Masterchef" and that, quite happily, means that we have a whole lot more time for celebrity chefs. Tonight we get the incredible Daniel Boulud, Alain Ducasse, and Guy Savoy. We are actually salivating over the very thought which would be fine if we weren't sitting hunched over our keyboard and in great danger of shorting it out. Let us therefore close by saying that the "Masterchef" season is nearly complete and that even if there were no celebrity chefs tonight it would probably be a good idea to pay close attention to what's going on.

There is a phrase we like to use at moments like these, a phrase which we both regularly employ and totally enjoy -- nitty-gritty. We are getting down to the nitty-gritty on "Masterchef." This show's season is 20 episodes long and tonight is episode 15, which means that after tonight 75% of the season is gone. We have gone from hundreds of semi-finalists to a handful of real and true finalists to... well, a half-handful of people who might actually win and in a few weeks we'll see who will win. Or, put another way, we're down to the nitty-gritty.

The final nine amateur chefs must create a unique dish with one of the most daunting mystery ingredient boxes they have faced to date; up for elimination, the finalists are assigned to prepare new-age fish recipes that must impress the judges.

We love "Masterchef," we may even love it more than we love "Hell's Kitchen" (and you know how much we love "Hell's Kitchen). The show features not just Ramsay yelling at people, but Graham Elliot and Joe Bastianich getting in on the action as well. The point here is for amateur cooks to compete as opposed to 'real' chefs. They'll be competing for the title of 'masterchef' and a cool quarter million dollars. Tonight though they'll just be competing to get a chance to really be in the competition -- these are just the prelims.

As a part of Gordon Ramsay's secret master plan to run all television networks during the summer, "Masterchef" has been airing not one but two nights a week. Well, perhaps Gordon didn't think things out fully because the show is ending tonight, merely halfway through August instead of running all the way up to Labor Day. We imagine that he'll have his diabolical plot perfected by next summer, but for now all we can do is highly recommend you watch tonight to see who wins "Masterchef."

As has become readily apparent through the years, "Hell's Kitchen," as much fun as it may be, is not about amateur chefs (there is always one or two present, but they have a tendency to not win). "Masterchef," on the other hand, is in fact solely focused on the amateurs. The whole point of the series is that amateurs compete. Gordon Ramsay ought to still be yelling at everyone, and let's face it, that's a huge reason to watch any of Ramsay's shows, but now he gets to get angry at amateurs instead of pros.
