Of the 17 episodes in the second season order for "Major Crimes," we have, to this point, seen 11 of them. That 11th one aired back before Labor Day and we've been without new episodes for something like three months. Tonight, that drought of episodes ends and we start the march towards the second season finale which is currently scheduled for the tail end of December. The series has already been renewed for a third season, so you need not have any fears that episode 17 of season two will be the last.

Yes, tonight is episode 10 of the third season of "Major Crimes," and after tonight the series is going away for a while. At some point down the line there will be another nine episodes of the season and we'll all get to see what happens next. Perhaps that will occur as early as November (as that's when the show returned during season two), but perhaps not. All we can do at this moment is console ourselves with the fact that the series is new tonight and put off any worries about the future for another time.

Well, here we are, another summer has arrived and that means that we're getting the start of another season of "Major Crimes." Every Monday night beginning tonight and running for 9 more weeks (10 total episodes), we will see a brand new episode of the Mary McDonnell-starring series. And what, you ask, do they do on this Mary McDonnell-starring series? That is a foolish question, they fight crime... major crime. So tune in, because this "Closer" spinoff starts again tonight.

This is the third-to-last episode this season of "Major Crimes," and the penultimate story for the season. You see, it works that way because next week and the week after are parts one and two of the season finale. We don't know, precisely, what that means for tonight, but we don know that the episode is called "Year-End Blowout," and at least in part it's called that because this year, 2013, is ending. It also may be called that because the season is all-too-soon ending, but we won't know that for certain until we watch tonight.

There are many out there who associate Mary McDonnell with her work on "Battlestar Galactica," us amongst them. How can anyone who watched that series not? The sci-fi Syfy epic series was... well... epic. However, we don't want to take anything away from her work on "The Closer" and now "Major Crimes." McDonnell has moved from a supporting player in the former to being front and center here on the latter (a spinoff). Tonight marks the end of the summer run of episodes for "Major Crimes"' second season. Expect another bunch of episodes to air down the line before the true second season finale hits, but this is the last new episode for a while.

While we greatly appreciate all the wonderful television that cable has to offer, we will admit to regularly forgetting about some stuff. For instance, "Major Crimes." We don't admit this lightly, but when we heard season two was starting up we did a 'Yes, "Major Crimes," love it and totally forgot about.' We are chagrined. We are embarrassed. We are super excited to see Mary McDonnell and company return tonight to solve some new, in no way whatsoever minor, crimes. You should be too, it's a fun series and Nadine Velazquez is joining the cast.

This is one of those shows which it almost feels like has been around for a while. A lot of that stems from the fact that we know a bunch of the main characters from "The Closer." Even so, "Major Crimes" is definitely its own series and it's a series whose first season ends tonight. Will the show opt to go out with a truly major crime and/or major cliffhanger? We choose to believe that it won't go softly into the off-season. Tune in, find out if we're wrong.
