TV Network - AMCHistory. This show is all about history. Specifically, it's about post-Civil War American history. Rather than think of it as a factual account, however, we encourage you to consider it more of a thematic discussion, looking at character archetypes and more broad theses about the nature of our society and the individuals living in it. Well, either that or it's just a period drama that does nothing more than greatly entertain those who watch. Plus, it has Common and Chief O'Brien. Watch the last two episodes of the season tonight and decide for yourself.

We like to imagine that poor Chief O'Brien somehow got caught in the midst of a transporter malfunction and soon found himself in the Old West, forced to pretend that he was someone named Doc Durant as we watch "Hell on Wheels." Okay, it's a completely insane notion, but if we can't tie everything back to "Star Trek," we just don't want to continue.
Seriously though, "Hell on Wheels," which stars Anson Mount, Common and more (including the aforementioned Colm Meaney) returns to AMC tonight with its tale of a former Confederate soldier who is just trying to make his way in the world and leave his past (far) behind.

We are desperately attracted to the idea of making a comment in reference to the first season of "Hell on Wheels" coming to a close as it hitting the breaks, or coming to a screeching halt, or (if things don't go well) coming completely off the rails. But, we won't do that. We will refrain from our baser instincts, the ones that drive us to make foolish statements. We hate doing that, we love giving in to those instincts, and we promise we won't refrain for long, but in the case of "Hell on Wheels," the truth is that it's just too easy to make silly statements about the whole show going off to heaven or some such thing, and we don't want to cheapen what we do. Watch tonight, it's the season finale.
