Hell on Wheels
Nov 22, 2014TV Network - AMC
Boy, "Hell on Wheels" just keeps on chugging, doesn't it? Or, to be more precise, it has kept on chugging right up until this moment, hasn't it? Tonight, the fourth season ends, but the chugging isn't set to stop just yet. "Hell on Wheels" will be back next year with the start of their fifth and final season and the plan currently has the show retuning the year after with the second half of that final season.

We though about saying in our one sentence homepage description that tonight, "Hell on Wheels" would "keep on chugging," before we opted for the slightly more sensible "keep on rolling." Either way you slice it, the point is that this series, in no small part, deals with the railroad and the changes what the railroad wrought. Tonight is the fifth episode of the season and, as you might suspect, the workers aren't getting the holiday weekend off.

You may have thought "Hell on Wheels" was gone, after all, it hasn't aired a new episode on a Sunday night since early October of 2012. That, however, might mean that you forgot that AMC moved the show over to Saturday's for its season last year and they're keeping it on Saturdays this year. Clearly the powers that be at the network feel as though the series has something to sustain it, and to sustain it on Saturday evenings, a place many networks choose to not air new material.

It is impossible to overstate the importance of the railroad to our nation's history. Okay, that's not entirely true, we can overstate it. For instance, if we were to tell you that the railroad, single-handedly, toppled Hitler and helped us win the Second World War, that would be overstating the case. Unquestionably the infrastructure of our nation including railroads helped us win, but single-handedly isn't right. "Hell on Wheels" is, in no small part, about the construction of the intercontinental railroad and some of the (fictionalized) men in involved. The third season ends tonight.

There are many out there who suggest that Saturday night is a vast wasteland for original programming. We don't necessarily agree. Obviously, Hallmark and Lifetime make a whole lot of originals which premiere on Saturdays, but AMC is now there on Satrudays too, with "Hell on Wheels." The first two seasons of the railroad drama aired on Sunday nights, but now it has been shipped off to Saturdays. We see this as the establishment of a bulkhead. We see this as, maybe, the start of something great. The only way to make it all happen though is for you tune in.

We are told that with the opening of season three, Cullen Bohannon isn't going to be on a quest for vengeance. Instead, apparently, he's going to be doing some sort of investing. We don't know about any of that. We do know that the series won't, we imagine, entirely leave the railroad behind, the season will start in 1867, and the greed will once more be a factor in the goins-on. Common and Colm Meaney are amongst the returning cast, and we, personally love Chief O'Brien. Back-to-back episodes get the season started right tonight.

History. This show is all about history. Specifically, it's about post-Civil War American history. Rather than think of it as a factual account, however, we encourage you to consider it more of a thematic discussion, looking at character archetypes and more broad theses about the nature of our society and the individuals living in it. Well, either that or it's just a period drama that does nothing more than greatly entertain those who watch. Plus, it has Common and Chief O'Brien. Watch the last two episodes of the season tonight and decide for yourself.

We like to imagine that poor Chief O'Brien somehow got caught in the midst of a transporter malfunction and soon found himself in the Old West, forced to pretend that he was someone named Doc Durant as we watch "Hell on Wheels." Okay, it's a completely insane notion, but if we can't tie everything back to "Star Trek," we just don't want to continue.
Seriously though, "Hell on Wheels," which stars Anson Mount, Common and more (including the aforementioned Colm Meaney) returns to AMC tonight with its tale of a former Confederate soldier who is just trying to make his way in the world and leave his past (far) behind.

We are desperately attracted to the idea of making a comment in reference to the first season of "Hell on Wheels" coming to a close as it hitting the breaks, or coming to a screeching halt, or (if things don't go well) coming completely off the rails. But, we won't do that. We will refrain from our baser instincts, the ones that drive us to make foolish statements. We hate doing that, we love giving in to those instincts, and we promise we won't refrain for long, but in the case of "Hell on Wheels," the truth is that it's just too easy to make silly statements about the whole show going off to heaven or some such thing, and we don't want to cheapen what we do. Watch tonight, it's the season finale.
