Gordon Ramsay of 'Hotel Hell'

Hotel Hell

Aug 13, 2012 08:00 PM

TV Network - FOX

As we all know, "Kitchen Nightmares" features the same three or four basic problems fixed over and over and over again.  If we had to guess, "Hotel Hell" will do roughly the same thing, but with Gordon Ramsay fixing hotels instead of just restaurants.  We had no idea that Gordon Ramsay was an expert in hotels, but it would make sense that he is what with his staying in tons of them so that he can go out and fix restaurants.  Plus, he's Gordon Ramsay which makes him an expert in just about everything... including awesome.

What would you say if we told you that "Kitchen Nightmares," despite its strict adherence to formula, was one of our favorite shows on television?  Would you think us weak?  Would you think us foolish  Well, before you get so judge-y (we might have to start calling you Gordon Jr.), why don't you tune in tonight and do so with an open mind.  The series may stick by its formula on a weekly basis, but that's because it works.  As it turns out, it's fun to watch people in denial about their place of business and for Gordon to set them straight.

Tonight, for the season premiere, Ramsay is returning to Amy's Baking Company.  That particular episode last season caused a bit of a sensation as the people running the place appeared far more bonkers than the usual sort with which Ramsay deals. Tonight, we'll get some new footage of that visit, an interview with the owners, and an explanation from Ramsay.  It should prove terribly interesting.

Every year, for reasons we don't understand, there are people on "Hell's Kitchen" who don't deserve to be there.  Tonight is the fifth episode of the season and that means that we've eliminated four folks who clearly shouldn't get a black jacket already.  You can bet, however, there are still a bunch of folks who need to go home left.  Tonight, one of those deserving few gets canned.  Watch and find out just whom it is that Ramsay opts to yell at and unceremoniously dismiss.  We have a pick or two for him if he needs help, but we kind of doubt that he does.

Holy cow, Gordon Ramsay is back.  Sure, he was due back a couple of weeks ago on "Kitchen Nightmares," but they've opted to push that (twice now) and, instead, are going to give us "Hell's Kitchen" moderately more early than they had anticipated.  What, precisely does that mean?  Well, it has more to do with what it means for "American Idol" than anything else, but as for us, it means that rather than watching Ramsay call different people awful names every week on "Kitchen Nightmares," we'll get to watch him calling the same people awful names every week here.

If it feels like this season of "Hell's Kitchen" is ending earlier in the summer than other seasons, that's because it is.  Last year, "Hell's Kitchen" aired its finale on September 10th, and here we are still in July and it's ending tonight.  Don't even get us started on the fact that season 10 only had a 20 episode order and season 11 is doing 22 episodes.  That is two whole extra episodes of Gordon Ramsay yelling about the beef wellington and calling people fat cows, but it just doesn't feel like enough, does it?  On the bright side, we are already promised, at minimum, two more seasons down the line.  So, just because it ends for a while tonight doesn't mean it's ending forever.  But, to be clear, it's ending for a while tonight.

We are getting awfully close to the time when the red team and the blue team disappear and everyone gets their own black jacket.  Now, that really is a special moment for the series.  It is the moment when the intra-team backstabbing become front-stabbing, it is the moment when everyone is open and honest about being in this for themselves, and not just honest to the camera, honest to their competitors' faces.  It is also the moment, sadly, when Ramsay tends to get slightly more nice about what people are doing in the kitchen and acts like he's been successful mentoring them.  That bit we don't buy, but we totally accept the rest of it.

In the past (or at least last year, but we feel as though it's been the case in other seasons as well), we have gotten "Masterchef" episodes on back-to-back nights.  That isn't going to happen with this, the fourth season of the cooking competition show.  Perhaps that is because it's starting far earlier in the year, perhaps it's because the show is going to end later, perhaps it's for other reasons, all we know for certain is that things are different this year... very different.  If Joe Bastianich is nice this year, it really will be like we're watching a completely different series.

There is a school of thought of which states that every episode of "Kitchen Nightmares" is essentially the same -- the owners all think the food is great; the staff hates the management; and eventually Ramsay is able to get it through everyone's head that he, Ramsay, can fix every issue.  That school of thought is 100% accurate (variation comes in with whether or not the kitchen is clean), but misses the point that the formula is brilliant and makes for great television.  Tune in tonight for the season finale and see if we're not right about it all.
