Gene Simmons Family Jewels

If this season of "Gene Simmons Family Jewels" has taught us anything, it's that life doesn't end after marriage. We have heard plenty of stories to the contrary, but Simmons, Tweed, and everyone else on the show has proven to us that things continue after you put on a wedding ring. You would have thought that we would have known that what with our being married for nearly a decade and all, but no, it took Gene Simmons and Shannon Tweed to point it out to us. Thank you reality television, you've made us a better person (not that we'll stop using the royal 'we' when we talk).

If you follow this series you're well aware that Gene Simmons and Shannon Tweed got into something of a tiff over whether or not they would get married. It kind of cast a shadow over a number of episodes. Well, that is now behind us (there were a number of specials revolving around a wedding), but don't imagine that marriage equals smooth sailing for the series. No, there will be road bumps, many, many road bumps. And--you know it and we know it--it's the road bumps that make the entire thing fun.

It has been an odd half-season for "Gene Simmons Family Jewels." Okay, truth be told, the season has been weird as a whole... the series has been weird as a whole. The big question, as we all know, has been about the possibility of nuptials between Gene and Shannon. Will the season end on a happy note? A sour one? Or maybe it will just be some sort of off-key cliffhanger? We really don't know and we've completely avoided reading any and all gossip columns so that it would be a true surprise to us. If you know what happens, please don't tell us before we get a chance to watch this super-long finale.

The last season of "Gene Simmons Family Jewels" ended with a will they-won't they cliffhanger. Gene asked Shannon a question and Shannon didn't answer before the final credits rolled. Tonight, we hope, we're going to get Shannon's answer. We have theories about what said answer will be, and our theories suggest that no matter the answer, the path forward will be neither smooth nor easy. There very well may be a happily ever after for these folks in some form, but that's years away. Before then it's just a whole lot of fun to watch.

Rock and roll! Yeah or something like that. Do you think that at his age Gene Simmons still has the ability to rock and roll all night and party every day? He might be able to, he still does that rock and roll thing, but we're just not so sure he can maintain that sort of pace. If the truth be told, we're hoping that the series will answer that question in this season's premiere episode. Without knowing the answer to such a thing, how can we possibly trust Simmons any more when he provides the sort of wit and insight we're used to getting from him?

What exactly is it that makes aging rock stars so much fun to watch on television? Is it the fact that they simply don't live in the real world anymore? Is it getting to see them try to interact with the real world? Is it the life lessons they try to impart to their kids about the real world that they know nothing about? Almost certainly the answer lies in the rock stars' relationship (tenuous though it may be) to the real world. There's just something about hearing these guys (and gals) discuss their perception of how things work when they clearly don't know that makes for great watching.
