Tonight will mark the best ratings "Elementary" will get this season. Maybe they'll be the best single episode ratings the series will ever get. Why? Because tonight, "Elementary" airs after the Super Bowl. Whether people tune in because they're interested or because they fell asleep during the post-game and didn't turn their sets off, expect the series to do really well. Also, on a creative level, expect them to give it everything they have. As of this writing we haven't seen any promos for the episode yet, but we're hoping for Moriarty to make his first appearance. Go big or go home, that's our take.
If you plan on DVRing the show, remember to set your recorder to go long.

Tonight, Sherlock Holmes will have to solve the toughest case of all. Well, we say that, but the truth is that we don't know if it's true. There have been cases in the past that have taken years or that he's failed at, so to say that this one is going to be the hardest one may be a difficult sell. On the other hand, this is the season finale, so you can bet that it isn't going to be a walk in the park. The man is going to have to work and he's going to have to work hard. Joan is going to have to work hard too, and probably their cop friends as well. Season finale, time to let it all hang out.

In the not-too-distant future, we're going to get the return of "Sherlock." Oh, it is coming. But, we implore you, you mustn't forget about this version of Sherlock, which returns with new episodes tonight. What would this Sherlock do if you forgot about him? Would he turn back to a life of drugs? Would he, instead, turn to a life of crime? Would Watson be able to stop him? Let us not allow these questions to even be asked, let us instead tune into the first episode of the new year and give this Sherlock the support he needs (even if he won't ask for it).

Do you remember how, last fall, you were all worried about how "Elementary" could exist in the same world as "Sherlock" and we were all like don't worry about it, it'll be fine. We don't want to say we told you so, but there have now been more episodes--far more--of "Elementary" than of "Sherlock" and, in fact, we've now gotten more "Elementary" episodes than we may ever get of "Sherlock." The NY-based Holmes series starts up season two tonight and the real question is just how intriguing they can make it.

Do you remember when this television season began you were all like 'How can they do this with "Sherlock" airing once every so often on PBS?' Well, even if you refuse to admit it, you were and we told you not to worry about it, that the two series would be very different and that you could totally love them both and that it wouldn't be wrong. And, here we are, at the end of the television season and you love them both and we were proven right. There is no need to thank us, just go out there, watch the final two episodes of the season and be happy with the world. We are.

So, you watched "Elementary" after the Super Bowl this past Sunday and you enjoyed yourself. We ask you, if you liked it on Sunday, why are you not going to like it today? Don't you think you should at least consider watching. We do, and John Hannah does (we assume) as well. We assume this because Hannah is guest starring tonight as Sherlock's old drug dealer and that he wants you to see him on TV. So, listen to yourself and listen to our assumptions about John Hannah's desires (to be clear, we haven't spoken to Hannah and are blindly assuming what he'd wish) and watch tonight.

Freda Foh Shen (from "Everwood" amongst other places) is going to be on "Elementary" tonight as Joan Watson's mom. We are going to be that when SHerlock meets her he says something incredibly rude and insensitive. Then, maybe, Joan will get all huffy but will eventually come to understand that Sherlock meant no harm by it and he'll understand that he may have gone too far. Then, as they talk about it Sherlock will have an epiphany about the case and solve the whole thing. Great, right?

Last night, we suggested that perhaps baseball and the World Series wasn't modern enough for you and that you spend time with something undoubtedly modern (we gave you "Modern Family" as a choice). Tonight, we'd suggest that one of your top non-World Series choices is really pretty elementary. Jonny Lee Miller is going to be everyone's favorite 19th Century turned 21st Century consulting detective in a new episode tonight, and there is nothing more modern that. In fact, it may just make you wonder why, if they can update Sherlock Holmes so well, they can't do the same for baseball (listen, we're not saying baseball isn't the greatest thing since sliced bread, we're taking the role of someone who doesn't like the sport).
