Dr. Seuss' How the Grinch Stole Christmas

    Dec 24, 2013

    TV Network - ABC

We think that we might highlight this holiday special on a yearly basis, and you know why?  Because it is an utterly classic, it is an encapsulation of all that is right about this holiday, from being with family to celebrating hope to digging into rare Who-roast-beast, to the knowledge that toys (Pop guns! And bicycles! Roller skates! Drums! Checkerboards! Tricycles! Popcorn! And plums!) don't make the holiday but do make it better.  It is about decorating (even dogs) and happiness.  It is about your heart growing until it is larger than average (but not in a deadly way).  The book may be dedicated to Teddy Owens, but the tale is for all of us.  Watch it tonight and go to sleep with visions of sugar plums dancing in your head.

After tonight, that's it, no more Christmas television shows.  So, it's time to get in those last chance opportunities to see the great Christmas classics.  ABC is helping out in that quest by airing the animated "Dr. Seuss' How the Grinch Stole Christmas" this evening from 8:00 to 8:30 (eastern and pacific, naturally).  Listen, you could turn down watching this.  You could think yourself too cool for school.  But, trust us, come April when you're Christmas spirit is running on 'E,' you're totally going wish that you watched tonight.  Don't have that regret.  Do the right thing and see if you don't get to carve that come Rare Who Roast Beast yourself.

    TV Network - ABC Family

There are certain things which have to occur during the holidays.  Somewhere amongst these are the eating of turducken, the tears at the breaking of a new toy, an uncomfortable moment with Uncle Ralph, and the watching of holiday specials.  We have tried to include several of these in the calendar, and tonight, ABC Family, as a part of their 25 Days of Christmas, is going to air the Jim Carrey live action "Grinch" twice.  Watch, and have your heart grow three sizes today (before your waist does the same on Tuesday).

    Dec 25, 2011

    TV Network - ABC

Yes, it may have aired the week after Thanksgiving, but, "How the Grinch Stole Christmas" is just about the perfect way to spend Christmas night.  Tonight, ABC is giving us that chance with the tale of the all the Whos down in Whoville who like Christmas a lot and the Grinch, who lives just north of Whoville, who does not.  The green guy is going to come down from the top of Mount Crumpit and he's going to learn a truly important lesson.  So, as you put together that impossible to build bike (seriously, you shouldn't be trying to put that together, especially after that second drink), celebrate the holidays with this Seussian classic (and then with the live version which airs later tonight).

You would think that maybe, just maybe, after all these years the Grinch would learn that you can't stop Christmas from coming.  He hasn't yet though.  He says he has by the end of the special every single year, but then the next year he's back at it again, stealing the last can of Who hash (we think the Whos are cannibals, but that's neither here nor there).  Tonight, the Grinch is back to his grinchy tricks one last time for the season as he attempts to stop Christmas with the help of his faithful dog, Max.
