TV Network - PBSOkay, some of you will take the line that with "Downton" already renewed for season four, there's very little to care about here -- anything that happens tonight can be easily fixed down the line. That is not how we things. Tonight matters. Next week matters. There is, simply put, nothing that happens on a television series we like that does not matter. Television is about the journey, not the final destination. If it were about the final destination, shows could survive solely based upon end credits and we don't like that view of our television screens. Credits do matter, but so does content.

This is it, the end of the third season of "Downton Abbey." Yes, we may have seen the episode, and yes, we may know exactly what's going to take place, but no we're not going to tell you. You can't be serious even thinking that we would tell you what's going to happen to the abbey or the village or the people who live in it. What we're going to tell you is that you should watch and you should enjoy yourself, because we're not going to see more "Downton Abbey" for nearly a year.

While there are unquestionably people out there (like us) who love both the Super Bowl and "Downton Abbey," there is not a complete and totally overlap of audiences. In fact, "Downton Abbey" probably exists as the perfect counterprogramming option to the Super Bowl. They aren't breaking out a speciial episode or anything, but all episodes of "Downton" are pretty special, aren't they? We don't envy folks, like us, who love both the Super Bowl and Downton, but then again, that's why they make TiVos, isn't it?

Listen, don't you think you ought to give "Downton" a try? You pretend like you watch the show. You laugh when all the other television series you actually watch make "Downton Abbey" jokes and reference Mary and Matthew, don't you think that you ought to actually check out "Downton" itself? We can tell you that we love the series, that we find it funny and smart and with Shirley MacLaine portraying Cora's mom tonight, can you really skip it? Can you afford to not watch? Can you afford to just smile and nod as other shows reference Lord Grantham with you pretending like you get it even when you really don't? Just watch. You'll love it... we think.
