Diners, Drive-ins & Dives

Oh boy, we tell you, tonight, the 19th season of "Diners, Drive-ins & Dives" gets going and it does so, we are happy to say, with Guy's hometown. Well, we think it's Guy's hometown anyway. The episode is called "Guy's Hometown Tour," and it's from that title that we are drawing our conclusions. So, if you're like us, you've wondered for a whole long time what makes Guy Fieri the way Guy Fieri is, and this episode may provide us with some very, very interesting answers.

We will admit it, we don't quite understand how Guy Fieri does it. The guy has multiple restaurants and TV shows and appearances and goodness knows how much other stuff he's got going on. But, he still somehow manages to keep this travel show going, heading all over the States in order to find the best diners, drive-ins, and dives he possibly can. Clearly the man likes food, and who can blame him -- food is good. Food is delicious, and the sort of unadorned food he is celebrating here is the sort of food that we can all get behind.

In "Diners, Drive-ins & Dives" Guy Fieri goes around the country (he doesn't actually drive we don't think, we assume someone drives that car of his from place to place) and samples down home cooking, or down bar cooking, or just greasy delicious foods. Really, however you want to describe the things that Guy eats, we think that, regularly anyway, the words 'really and truly healthy' aren't associated with them (not to say that they aren't on occasion). No, the food may not be healthy but it certainly looks delicious and we look forward to seeing what the season finale has in store.

We have highlighted this show before (perhaps last week) and, odds are, we will highlight it again (next week?). Do you know why that is? It's because there's something wonderful about traveling around and finding these great little places, these inexpensive, down-home restaurants with a great attitude and great food. There is certainly something to be said for eating at five-star restaurants on a regular basis, but doing that stops one from visiting the great places Guy Fieri shows us here. Watch tonight's season premiere and see for yourself if it doesn't make your mouth water and if you don't contemplate a little vacation in the near future.

Yup, we're highlighting this show again, and we're happy to tell you why -- we love it. We love watching Guy Fieri go across the country and get treated to some of the best food you've ever imagined eating in some of the oddest places you've ever imagined eating it. We would actually love to watch Fieri and Anthony Bourdain get together and do a "No Reservations at Dives" crossover kind of a thing, but that would involve two different television networks getting together and don't imagine that it's going to happen. But, at least this show is here, so eat up, it's the season finale.

Okay, so it was only at the beginning of March that season 13 of this series finished up and here we are, a mere four weeks later, and the new season is already beginning. Rather than being all shocked and unhappy about the quick turnaround, we suggest you revel in it. How many times have you seen a season finale and thought to yourself 'Man, I have to wait another four months--minimum--for this show to come back? I can't stand that.' You don't have to do that here, you've only had to wait four weeks to see Guy Fieri go off to some great new diner or drive-in or dive. Be an optimist for once, will you.

"Diners, Drive-ins & Dives" features the one and only (some would consider that a lucky thing, but we're not making that joke here and now... maybe later) Guy Fieri going around the country and finding the best worst places to get food. Okay, maybe 'worst' is a little harsh. The notion we're going for is that he goes around and finds these down home-type places, places where you can actually get a table and don't have to pay $100 for an appetizer, and tells us all about them. We meet the folks behind the restaurant and get to see the food (which always makes us hungry). It really can be quite good.

Have you been in an office lately and heard people talk about the latest and greatest food trucks in the area? There is, in this country, a movement pushing for truly great food at an honest price, and this series is part of that. Guy Fieri travels all over the country looking for those places which offer some of the best food you've ever tasted, places which don't require you to get a reservation six months in advance, put on a monkey suit, and then slip the maitre'd $100 just to get a table within an hour and a half of your resevation time that isn't right next to the bathroom. Watch and see how well you can eat at some 'down home' places.

If you watch enough of the Food Network, you're liable to think that if you're not eating at a four star restaurant on a nightly basis you're not living right. That's one of the reasons we like this show - it proves that you can find great food and have a great time eating at some of the most abysmal looking places you can imagine. No, not every place we see on the series is grungy, but it's only the rare one that requires a reservation six months in advance and a $50 tip to the maitre d' before you actually get a table.
