Breaking Bad

TV Network - AMCThat Walter White, he's quite the character, isn't he? Sadly though, he doesn't have much time left. This is the show's final season and the first half of said season ends tonight. Where will Walter end up? What will happen to him and his family and his partner? Will, magically, a plane fall out of the sky and kill everyone? Well, possibly, but we'd bet that such a thing doesn't happen tonight as the show does still have eight episodes that will air at some point down the line.

We kind of wanted to do this paragraph as a rhyme -- 'It's Sunday night/Time for Walter White/He may not be good looking/Yet he's totally got tons of meth cooking/Just cause he's breaking bad/It don't mean you gotta be sad.' It seemed a little too glib (not to mention poorly worded and poorly worked out syllabically speaking). So, instead, let us remind you that "Breaking Bad" is one of the best shows on television and that if you don't watch you're not just missing out, you're making a pretty big mistake. Do it for Walter, he needs you.

We would like to take a minute here to list all the various awards that "Breaking Bad" and its cast and crew have won during the show's run. However, doing that would take more than a minute and may very well grow tiresome. So, instead, let us tell you this -- "Breaking Bad" isn't simply one of those shows which wins awards but isn't terribly well liked by people in general. No, "Breaking Bad" is a hugely compelling television series and one which we hugely urge you to watch. You won't regret it.

This is one of those happy and sad moments, one of those times where we feel both a profound excitement and a huge sense of regret. We can't wait to see what happens tonight and yet are saddened by the fact that once we do see it all we're going to have to wait nearly a year before the next new episode of "Breaking Bad." That is hard thing for us to have to deal with, but we still wouldn't trade seeing the season finale for anything in the world. It may be a bittersweet moment, but we're going to try to focus on the sweet.

We are not going to tell you that things haven't been going strongly thus far during season four, but whatever you think of what's been taking place, expect things to get ratcheted up a notch or two tonight. This is the second to last episode of the season, which means that tonight all the storylines that have to come to a head next week will be organized and arranged and, if need be, given a swift kick into motion. There is a whole lot of stuff to work out still this season and hopefully this episode gives us some hints about what we can expect to go down next week.

We distinctly remember watching Bryan Cranston back in the day on "Malcolm in the Middle" and thinking to ourselves how much we enjoyed his work and how funny we thought he was. Well, now we all also know just how talented the man is at dramatic work as well. There are a lot of things about this show that work brilliantly, but Cranston is the man at the center of it all (at least on screen). Watch and revel in the glory that is Cranston's Walter White, you'll be glad you did.

It feels like just yesterday that we were happily contemplating all the wondrousness that season four of "Breaking Bad" would bring. It feels like just yesterday that we had a full 13 episodes stretched out in front of us like banquet ready to be slowly, and methodically, consumed. Well, now here we are, episode 10 -- the vast majority of the season is behind us, and after tonight only three episodes lay ahead. Things are building and the season finale is on the horizon. Watch tonight because there are so few new episodes left this season.

We all now what today is, what it is the anniversary of. We are not going to write something pseudo or would-be pithy and potentially amusing about watching "Breaking Bad" tonight. No comments about how the show is like a drug that we just can't live without. Let it suffice to say that we like the show, you like the show; it's a well made series on all fronts and it may just be a great way to end your evening.

As everyone is aware, this is Labor Day Weekend. The lucky amongst us have a weekend off, but Walter White isn't one of the lucky amongst us. He will, we are certain, be working hard this Labor Day weekend. No one on "Breaking Bad" gets to take a little three day holiday, they're going to have a brand new episode for us to revel this week, and then we can stay up all night and talk about it without having to worry about being tired at work tomorrow. Can you imagine a better way to close out Sunday?

As we progress further and further into the fourth season of "Breaking Bad," we've come to believe one thing, and believe it quite strongly -- we just can't get enough of this show. You would never think that a show about drugs could be quite so addictive, wait, check that, maybe you could believe it, maybe you should believe it. In the end, "Breaking Bad," with its characters, actors, and story arc has proven itself a highly addictive show. Do we label it a 'Must Watch' every week? We do, because you must watch it. You just must.

Last week we suggested to you that it might be foolish to to skip even a single episode of "Breaking Bad," and we spent some time considering why it is that we feel that way. Well, we've come up with an answer -- good television, and "Breaking Bad" is good television, is kind of like a drug. Once you get your hands on some good TV you never want to let it go, no matter what happens you find yourself going back to that well once more. "Breaking Bad" may not just be about drugs, it may just be something of a drug in and of itself.

Things progress. It is a truism about life and it is a truism about serialized television shows. It isn't that you can't turn on "Breaking Bad" in the middle (like now) and enjoy it immensely--there's plenty to immediately like about the show--but it certainly makes a whole lot more sense and is more enjoyable if you turn it on weekly to catch the newest episode. Why would you even suggest that you might want to miss tonight's episode? That is not a particularly brilliant plan (it is certainly nothing that Walter would ever come up with).

Our good friend Walter White, we have been told, spends a whole lot of time on this show scrambling. He works and works and works to head off problems, to prevent issues, and then to fix things once they go bad (and there's been an occasion or two when things have gone badly). It is one of the reasons we like Walter. That and we like Bryan Cranston, Cranston has proven himself over and over again on this series and, as with the supporting cast, is great to watch.

This week's episode of "Breaking Bad" is entitled, as you may have surmised 'Open House.' What exactly does that mean? Well, you have one of two main choices, don't you? It could either be that there's going to be some sort of actual real estate-type open house or that there's going to be some sort of ironic use of the notion of a real estate open house. We aren't here to let you in on those sorts of secrets though, we're just here to allow you to ruminate on the possibilities.

AMC has done a major push for this season premiere of "Breaking Bad," giving folks lots of ways to watch season three and earlier episodes. What with "Mad Men" not coming back this summer, "Breaking Bad" will have an easier time winning the coveted 'Best AMC Original Series of the Year' award (it's kind of like an Emmy but not really). So, we're going to assume that you're down with what's been going on in Walter White's life to this point, and, if you've been watching, you know just how good the show is and don't really need us to tell you to be excited, but we're telling you anyway -- be excited.

It seems as though every season is a tough one for Walter White and the one that ends tonight has certainly been no exception. Whether it all ends on an up not or a down note, we can promise you one thing - it will all end tonight (this season will anyway). Wherever we leave Walter and company at the end of the episode is where they're going to stay for quite some time. Oh, you can dream about what may be happening with the characters, but it's only going to be a dream.

If you've been following the show, you're well aware that "Breaking Bad" all started out with Cranston's character deciding to go into the lucrative field of illegal drugs following a terminal cancer diagnosis. What could the man do, after all, he had to secure his family's financial future following his demise, didn't he? Oh come on, you know that you'd do the exact same thing. Okay, fine, maybe you wouldn't, but at the very least you have to admit that it's made for some good television that is both funny and heartbreaking.

AMC's surprise Emmy winner returns for a second season of moody, darkly comic suburban drug-dealing dramedy.
Seriously, if you still think of Bryan Cranston just as the dad from "Malcolm in the Middle," you owe it to yourself to check out at least one episode.
Anna Gunn, Aaron Paul, Betsy Brandt, Dean Norris and RJ Mitte star.
