Machinations. "Boardwalk Empire" is about machinations. It is about the consolidation of power and the attempt to get lots and lots of money as well. Oh come on, you know what the show is, you know that Steve Buscemi stars in it, and you know that even if you don't watch it you ought to watch it. It is like "The Sopranos" but a period piece. Will tonight's episode close out with a cliffhanger and a hint about what next season will bring or will it feature everything getting wrapped up in a nice, neat bow. Either way, the show will be back with season four.

HBO has really been quite successful with the whole mob thing, haven't they? Outside of "The Sopranos," there has been the show about the vampire mob, the one about the acting mob, the one about the Lannister mob, the one about the news mob, and this one about the Atlantic City mob.
Seriously though, we don't know exactly what the third season of "Boardwalk Empire" is going to bring, but we do know that the promos HBO has been running make it all look fantastic. We will say that you should probably expect to see Nucky challenged by someone and for him to respond in ways that most of us probably wouldn't (if we weren't mobsters).

If "Boardwalk Empire" has proven anything to us, it is that HBO still has the knack. For years, HBO has managed to put out compelling, grand, television programs. From "The Wire" to "The Sopranos" to "Boardwalk Empire," and so many more, HBO has been a part of some truly great television programs. The second season of "Boardwalk Empire" will end tonight, and we certainly imagine that it will go out with a bang (perhaps several bangs). The series will be back next year for a third season, but you're not going to want to skip the finale this year just because the show will be back again next year. Trust us.

The second season of "Boardwalk Empire" is 12 episodes long, and tonight we're getting episode three of the second season. That is far enough into the season to fully declare "Boardwalk Empire" to be in full swing, the kind of full swing that happened in gin joints during Prohibition. That is the right terminology, isn't it, "gin joints?" That's what Bogart called them ad so that's what we've gone with, but we really don't want to offend the powers that be here, because, let's face it, Nucky isn't the type of guy whom you want to make angry. Tune in and enjoy the period drama of it all.

HBO is well known for its fantastic drama series, and "Boardwalk Empire" is certainly no exception to that tradition. There may be other cable networks which have improved their original offerings and which have gained in stature in recent years, but it still kind of feels that they're all chasing HBO. "Boardwalk Empire" begins season two tonight and promises to deepen its look at Prohibition in Atlantic City. Steve Buscemi leads the cast as 'Nucky' Thompson a politician and gangster and if you tune in we're really pretty sure that you're going to like what you see.

What did we think of this first season of "Boardwalk Empire?" Are we liking it? Are we enjoying the time period feel of it all? Uh huh, uh huh. No, no we understand exactly what you're saying. We totally get it. As for us, the way we see things (and we think we said this when "Boardwalk Empire" premiered), there's just something about an HBO original (especially the dramas) that make them hugely compelling. We don't know if it's the producers they get, the cast, or just the way they're marketed, but we find almost all of them at least worth considering watching. And as this is the season finale, it's pretty much essential viewing.

We know exactly what you're thinking, but no, that's not John Waters, that's Steve Buscemi and he's not even playing John Waters. Buscemi stars in this series as Nucky Johnson, a mobster/politician and the leader of Atlantic City during Prohibition. According to Wikipedia, Johnson not only existed, but he ran the Republican political machine in the city. We're not saying that Wikipedia knows everything, in fact we'd argue that "Boardwalk Empire" is probably just as factual as Wikipedia, but we do use the site as the factual basis for everything in our lives. Everything.
