Big Brother

TV Network - CBSTonight marks the first Sunday episode this season on "Big Brother." We can't think of a better way for you to turn off your brain cells on a Sunday night, giving them just a little extra chance to recharge before Monday morning, than watching the tomfoolery that is going to be going on tonight. How do we know that there is going to be tomfoolery tonight? This is "Big Brother," there is always tomfoolery taking place. Shenanigans too, but we use that word more and have been trying to avoid it as of late.

For several weeks we have been telling you that this day is fast approaching. For several weeks we have warned you that "Big Brother" would be coming to a close soon. Well, that time is here, that day has arrived. Ladies and gentleman, the season finale of "Big Brother" is upon us. Tonight we will learn which of our final houseguests is going to win this season of the show and take home the prize. We are actually rooting for a huge switch and Julie Chen being declared the winner, but, we just don't see that happening. Maybe we can organize a write in campaign.

There are two possibilities when a show like "Big Brother" approaches its finale. The first is that you're more intrigued than ever and just dying to get through the rest of the season. The second is that you're ready to give up, that you no longer care to see what is happening, that you're beginning to fade. Don't let this second option be the one you choose -- get excited, get loud, go big. This season of "Big Brother" is reaching its crescendo, don't let it peak without you.

A whole lot has happened over the course of the first 24 episodes of "Big Brother," which is the exact sort of thing that you would expect to happen when you put a bunch of folks into a house together. There are, including tonight, a mere six episodes left this season, with the season finale airing on September 19. Please, if you've been watching the season to this point, don't give up now. And, if you haven't, things are going to be getting a lot more exciting at this point, you'll probably want to start watching.

Things progress awfully quickly on a television show when you're airing three episodes a week. It isn't that you can't miss an episode, it's just that you wouldn't want to. Putting people together in such close quarters for such an extended period of time (and booting folks out on a regular basis) makes things happen fast. What will this Wednesday's "Big Brother" bring? Well, honestly, we're hoping for betrayal and hatred and new found love and maybe even a surprise or two. Will we get that stuff? Fingers crossed, people, fingers crossed.

Does it feel like we regularly suggest watching "Big Brother?" Well, we do (regularly suggest watching it) and there are a couple of good reasons for that. First off, it's an incredibly fun series -- the insanity we regularly see displayed on the show makes us feel all cozy and warm in side. Second, it's on... a lot... it's on a whole lot. No joke, the show is on three times a week for two-plus months. That is a lot of episodes every single season which means that things happen quickly and we need to regularly remind you that you want to be watching. So... you want to be watching.

Unless the Chenbot, CBS, and "Big Brother" are pulling a fast one on us, we should see another house guest depart "Big Brother" tonight. After all, this is Thursday night and Thursday night is the live eviction show. That means uncomfortable questions, splintering of contestants, and--fingers crossed--tears. We know we shouldn't like it when house guests cry, but we kind of do. Tell us honestly, does it amuse you as much as it does us? Are we terrible people because we revel in the misery of reality show contestants? Don't you too just a little? Isn't that really why you watch?

Last Thursday we got our first look at this season's house guests. Tomorrow night we will lose one of them for the first time this season. So then, this is not only the first Wednesday episode of the year, but it is the last episode which will feature the full complement of house guests inside the house for the entirety of the episode. Alliances are forming, groups are coming together, plans are being fomented (we could have gone with 'made' there, but we like 'fomented'). Watch how we get to tomorrow's eviction today.

Through the years, "Big Brother" has become a staple of summer television programming. Airing three nights a week every year for more than a decade is a feat. The series has had some greater and some lesser seasons, but one thing we know it has going for it this year is the one and only Julie Chen. Chen returns to host another season of lookie-loo festivities starting tonight. A number of contestants through the years have gone on to appear on other reality shows, will any of this year's contestants strike a chord with the national audience so that we get to experience their wonder on "The Amazing Race" down the line?

Has this been the singularly most exciting season of "Big Brother" that we have ever had? Has this been the most exciting season any version of "Big Brother" anywhere in the world has ever had? Has this been the most exciting season of "Big Brother" that any network anywhere in the universe has ever broadcast or will ever broadcast? Probably not, but that doesn't mean that this hasn't been a whole lot of fun and it doesn't mean that we won't be sad to see the show disappear until next summer. Julie Chen announces the winner tonight.

Do you realize that this is the 24th episode of "Big Brother" this season? Airing three times a week allows for a huge number of episodes to be put out there in a short period of time. That does make some sense -- you need a good number of episodes for a full season but you can't really keep people locked away in a house for months and months on end. As for this particular episode? The season ends in a mere two weeks, if you don't catch up on the foolishness now, you may not have an opportunity before things really come to a head.

Wherein, exactly, does the brilliance of "Big Brother" lie? Is it in the foolish but attractive houseguests? Is it in the Chenbot and her deft interviewing of said foolish but attractive individuals? Is it in the voyeuristic qualities of the series? Or, perhaps, is it somewhere deep within our own psyche? There will be no time to contemplate such grand questions this evening as we're getting another live show and another eviction. Which "Big Brother" contestant will be sent packing tonight? Only the Chenbot knows for sure.

Are you one of those people who has a telescope trained at your neighbors' houses? Are you one of those people who hangs out in a tree with a pair of binoculars to see if you can catch a glimpse of your friends as they go about your private business? If you said 'yes' to either of those then quite obviously "Big Brother" is for you. Now, if you answered no to those questions but are only stopped from peeping because it's illegal (and we imagine you fall into that category), then "Big Brother" is still for you.

We'd like to tell you that the houseguests are finally allowed to go free tonight, but there are a couple of things wrong with that statement. First off, houseguests who haven't been evicted have been allowed to leave the house (for rewards and such) and second, are we really happy that some of these folks are going to be let loose in our society once more? Oh, we're not for oppression and locking people up who don't deserve it, but my goodness, cases could be made that a couple of the people on the show this season kind of do deserve it, couldn't they? Yikes!

You know the summer has truly begun when "Big Brother" starts. There is perhaps no better a staple of summer television than CBS' repeatedly putting a whole bunch of - let's say 'odd' - individuals into a single house with cameras everywhere. Julie Chen, or "The Chenbot" if you prefer, is the host of this interesting little program and there to question all the contestants about their not-quite-normal behavior. She may not be as forceful calling out the truly insane as we'd like, but at least she can tell time on an analog clock and knows what "a quart to four" means.

Yet another twist is coming on "Big Brother." That's what the producers tell us. As this listing is being written, though, we don't have a clue what that twist is. So we're just assuming that Thursday (Sept. 3) night's show will mark the end of Kevin's Head of Household run and that somebody else will be going home.
But who?
Ratings for "Big Brother" have been increasing in recent weeks, so we can only assume that viewers are getting increasingly curious as the Sept. 15 finale approaches...

It's the first "Big Brother" elimination of the season!
Which of our guinea pigs will we be losing?
Will it be a Brain?
A Jock?
A Popular Kid?
Or an Off-Beat Kid?
Well, we know it won't be a jock, since the Athletes have immunity this week. And it probably won't be a Popular Kid, because the Athletes love the Popular Kids.
It's just like high school.
As usual, Julie Chen hosts.

Eventually, "Big Brother" finally will have premiered in all of its different time slots.
This is the show's Tuesday night premiere and will feature the first Power of Veto challenge.
The Athletes are in control and Jessie has placed Lydia and Chima up for eviction, but will they be able to save themselves and change the balance of control in the house?
We have no idea.

America's favorite televised hamsters have their Sunday night debut as "Big Brother" airs its second episode of the season.
By this point, viewers should already have a pretty good sense of who they're rooting for and who they hope will spend the next three months on slop, suffering and bawling.
Julie Chen, as ever, is your host.

"Big Brother" is back!
CBS' long-running summer reality series (except in strike years where CBS has to occasionally rush a spring version into production) returns for its 11th installment.
Julie Chen is back for her hosting duties and Allison Grodner and Rich Meehan return as executive producers.
Who will survive the three months of competition and tedium to win the $500,000 prize?
We shall see!
