Do you realize that when "Beyond Scared Straight" premiered it was the highest rated series premiere in A&E history? That's right, the highest rated series premiere they've ever had. Now, what that means to us is that there are a whole lot of parents out there who are scared that their kids are heading down the wrong path and wanted the kids to check this out so that said young'uns could fly the straight and narrow. Season two promises to shock, amaze, and scare straight as much as season one did if not more.

The season of "Beyond Scared Straight" comes to an end tonight, and the truth is this -- if you watch, you're liable to find yourself never, ever, wanting to go to prison. Oh sure, you may initially believe prison to be a glorious, glamorous, and generally wonderful place, but a little time watching "Beyond Scared Straight" will disabuse you of that notion. That is, in fact, the point -- to make you understand that you really don't want to go to prison.

As the title for this series implies, this isn't just about kids getting scared straight, it's about going beyond that. Now, as much as we would like to make a joke about making the kids go crooked being one step beyond making them straight, to joke around about such a serious endeavor (and we choose to see it as such as opposed to deriving voyeuristic pleasure from the show) kind of rubs many the wrong way. So, instead, let us merely say that the season ends tonight and suggest that it might be worth watching.

The theory behind this series makes a whole lot of sense - send some troubled kids to see what happens if they become troubled adults and maybe by seeing example of what happens at the end of the road they're heading down they opt to choose a different track. We actually did this ourselves once - we were headed down an educational path in life, but upon seeing the end of that road, professordom, we quickly did an about face and found something far more suitable. Thank goodness we were offered that glimpse into the future, who knows what may have happened otherwise.
