Beauty and the Beast
Jul 07, 2014TV Network - The CW
You would be forgiven for thinking that any television series which finishes its second season run in July after going on hiatus in March wouldn't be coming back for a third season. Your assumptions, however, would be incorrect. "Beauty and the Beast" was, indeed, renewed for a third season back at the beginning of May. So, whatever happens with Vincent and Catherine tonight, what we can promise you is this -- they'll be back down the line. Maybe they'll even be all scarred and ugly when they return.

The last new episode of "Beauty & the Beast" appeared on The CW way back in mid-March. Seriously, if we're right, it was the 10th of that bitterly cold and awful (if you live on the east coast of the United States) month. We actually wonder if maybe it was in deference to the cold weather that The CW waited to air the series. Maybe they were worried that the steamy scenes would be too much for the piles upon piles of snow around. Okay, probably not, but it's okay to be pretty excited that the show is back.

Tonight is the last new episode of "Beauty & the Beast" that we're going to get for a while. No, the season isn't done yet, this is just the last episode for now (16th of the 22 episode season, if you're counting such things). At some point, presumably next month, "Beauty & the Beast" will be back on the air and we'll get to figure out exactly why Vincent thinks of Catherine as a beast. Oh, we kid, we kid, and we kind of took that joke from Tim Burton's "Batman," but that's because it's a good one.

Kristin Kreuk is back this fall as Detective Catherine Chandler. Also, Jay Ryan will be back as Vincent Keller. Put those two facts together and what does it mean? It means that The CW's update to "Beauty and the Beast," the one where the beast is devastatingly handsome in a CW sort of way, is back. We don't know what sort of exciting adventures and mysteries may unravel this season, we just know that the season is happening, it's starting tonight, and it's scheduled to run for 22 episodes (but not 22 weeks in a row one would surmise).

Is this the "Beauty and the Beast" which entranced audiences as a Disney movie? No. Is it the same one that aired on TV a few decades back? No. Is it the same one which people first heard tell of oh-so-long ago? Most obviously it isn't. That doesn't mean that the show can't be a success in its own right. That doesn't mean that you can't find a way to make the show interesting. That doesn't mean that it Kristin Kreuk and Jay Ryan can't be a dynamic, interesting, attractive lead duo. As the series returns with its winter premiere, see if it doesn't have something to attract you.

Please don't immediately jump on the notion of this being like a traditional "Beauty and the Beast" story. It isn't just that it's been updated, it's much more that it's kind of closer to "The Incredible Hulk" than "Beauty and the Beast." You see, if the Beast stayed a beast for all time, The CW wouldn't have an excuse to cast some hunky dude in the role (you can't do flashbacks to pre-Beast days every episode, can you?). So, instead, the Beast only becomes a beast when he gets angry, Hulk style even if he ends up looking like a beast, not the Hulk. One wonders if he got hit by Gamma rays here.
