An Idiot Abroad

From watching season one, here is how we see this series -- Stephen Merchant and Ricky Gervais send poor Karl Pilkington off to places that, at best, he only kind of sort of wants to go to (and at worst doesn't want to go to at all) for their own personal amusement. In short, they torture the poor chap. Apparently season two revolves around Karl completing items on his bucket list, which is weird, because we're quite certain that Karl still isn't really going to want to go. Maybe the point is that Merchant and Gervais make it the worst sort of bucket list fulfillment possible.

We don't like calling Karl Pilkington an idiot. We feel as though doing that is really rather rude and unfriendly. Consequently, we have a slight amount of trouble telling you about the series because Pilkington is the titular "Idiot." Ricky Gervais and Stephen Merchant regularly call Pilkington an idiot and that's why the show does as well (it's kind of their show). In any case, Pilkington has been spending this season recreating Marco Polo's journey and tonight is the final episode in the event. See how the idiot--er, Pilkington--fares in the finale.

This season, for reasons we don't quite (but sort of do), Warwick Davis is going to be traveling with Karl Pilkington. The journey Karl is making will take him from Italy to China, following in the footsteps of legendary explorer Marco Polo. Karl will, naturally hate the entire thing and Gervais and Merchant will make it as hellish for Karl as possible. That makes our question where Warwick Davis comes in -- is he going to be supportive of Karl or is he going to be there to make Karl's life worse?

Having watched this series, we're pretty confident when we say that Karl Pilkington probably isn't the smartest man ever to the grace this Earth. Of course, Ricky Gervais and Stephen Merchant haven't always been entirely nice and kind to the guy. We have to wonder whether or not he would shine were he supported properly. Or perhaps, Gervais and Merchant are supporting him properly and this is the best Pilkington can do. As we'll probably never really get the chance to find out, we'll just have to make do with what we're getting, which, let's face it, is really very good.
