Do not try and use any of your logic on us. Yes, it is absolutely true that heading into tonight's episode of "American Idol" there are only two contestants left and that all the votes will have been tabulated, but that's no reason that they can't find 120 extra minutes to pad things out (we're assuming a one minute announcement of the winner followed by a six minute ovation and song). Surely you want to see a few more in-show commercials and give a few final teary farewells to already eliminated contestants and hear a famous person or two sing and ponder which judges won't be asked back for season 13. The season of "Idol" ends tonight, and it's going to be one long finale.

Listen, we don't want to ruin anything here for you about what's going to happen tomorrow night on the "American Idol" finale, but the girl wins. That is just the way it is. For a guy to win at this point would involve some sort of ridiculous save foisted on us by the judges and while we're not sure how much this competition really determines who the best is, having a guy win this season would just destroy any credibility the show might have once had. There have been only women left as contestants left for what, weeks? Watch the last two women compete tonight and decide for yourself who ought to be your American Idol.

There is a tendency many individuals have--never us, of course--to kind of fall off watching halfway through a competition series like this. We can't recommend such things, you miss out on too much. However, we understand, it happens. Might we then take the opportunity to suggest that you tune in tonight. What are there, fewer than a half-dozen finalists left at this point? If you can't even answer that question, it really is time to check out the show once more. Who knows, maybe Mariah and Nicki have become the best of friends.

We have had a couple of live shows so far this season on "American Idol," the most important of which (in our estimation) is the one that revealed the top 10 finalists. Now though, with that top 10 revealed and having performed last night, we get the start of the results shows which will see one contestant eliminated on a weekly basis (barring any saves from the judges). The pressure has been on, but it really is ratcheted up to new heights at this point. You better be voting for your favorites, because if you don't, they're going to wind up exiting the show.

Wow. This is it, the top 10 "Idol" contestants of 2013 are performing tonight. The top 10 contestants. It is rather amazing, is it not? After all those auditions and the fights amongst the judges and the Hollywood round and the fights amongst the judges and the semifinals and the fights--you get the idea--the top 10 are here. We are at the top 10 of "American Idol," and that top 10 is going to perform tonight. Tomorrow, one of them will go home and while that will put us ever closer to a winner, the top 9 doesn't quite have the same ring to it, does it?

On a 90 minute episode tonight, this season's "American Idol" finalists will be announced. That makes this a pretty big night, and not just for you, but for those finalists too. There is, quite obviously, a whole long way to go still this season, but the folks who make the cut tonight will already have done an incredible amount. So, celebrate their journey thus far--and all the hard work you've done watching them progress--by tuning into the 90 minute episode.

On tonight's "American Idol," the top 10 male semifinalists will be performing. Now, this is good because it means we're getting that much closer to actually having finalists. It is also good because on what otherwise might be a slow, post-Sweep Tuesday night we're getting a new idol instead of some repeats. Don't give us any of your '"Idol" is always like a repeat because it's just people singing' malarkey. Don't you care about the lives of these people? Aren't you invested in their successes and failures? Don't you hope to see another fight between the judges?

We are not yet at the finalists for "Idol," but we have hit the pre-semis (is that a thing?). There are currently 20 male singers left and 20 female singers left, and tonight 10 of those men will sing (yesterday 10 of the women). Next week we'll get the final two sets of men and women, and then the semi-finalists will be announced. Okay, that's still a ways off, but getting to see the first group of 10 men sing tonight over the course of two hours will certainly give us a far better look at these contestants than we've gotten before.

As we regularly note, we're creeping ever more slowly to the finals. There are still 20 women contestants remaining this year on "Idol" and 10 of them are going to sing tonight. Next week, the final 10 will sing and soon enough, there will be 10--and then only five--women remaining. The other interesting thing to note as the season progresses are the changes at the judges' table. Are these people growing to like each other? Has the displeasure been manufactured? Will one of them be leaving before the season ends (probably not)?

You may not believe this, but the auditions on "American Idol" are finally over. They ended last week and now, this week, we're getting the Hollywood round (or at least the start of it). We aren't at the finalists yet--heck, the top 40 don't get revealed until a week from tomorrow--but we are in Hollywood and that means we're edging ever closer to the point where we all, finally, have to learn everyone's names (that is why they call it the finals, right?). Tune in tonight and see if you can remember these people from their auditions without a voice over reminding you about them.

Ah, "American Idol." There is nothing better than the audition phase. Seriously. We love it. Okay, so the actual contestants who make it to the finals and the one who wins the whole thing probably like the later parts better, but we love the auditions and those auditions are continuing tonight. You should watch. You'll enjoy it. They really are a whole lot of fun. Many would say that we're right about the auditions being the most awesome bits of the series and that these new judges are really gelling. See if you agree.

We don't want to let the cat out of the bag or anything, but they're not going to announce the winner of "American Idol" tonight. in fact, there's actually a pretty bad chance that the eventual winner will even be on tonight's show. Come one though, that's not exactly a reason to not watch. In fact, if we're being honest, this is our favorite part of the show. We love the auditions, the way Simon tears people a new one and then Paula says that he's being too harsh, it's fun. Whoa, we just had a flashback to 2003 or something. We are sure that this year's "Idol" auditions will be just as entertaining.

This is it people, the moment you've been waiting for since the last season ended. What we can promise you for this season is a new set of judges. Yes, Randy Jackson will be back, but outside of that we'll also have Nicki Minaj, Mariah Carey, and Keith Urban. It should make for, at minimum, some interesting moments. Will any of the judges have the ability to tell contestants off when they don't perform as they should? How will Ryan Seacrest react to them? The new season starts tonight and it won't be too long before we get some answers.

After another season of seeing hopes raised and then dashed, "American Idol" is coming to a close. It is almost cruel what happens to the contestants who are not eliminated -- week after week, their hopes are raised and then raised again, but chances are that they won't win. There these contestants are becoming ever more hopeful, ever more sure that they are the next American Idol, and yet, the odds are that they will lose. The odds are not ever in their favor, the odds are ever against them, it is only once they are one of two that the odds have evened out. Tonight, one of those two wins and you watch and hope that it is your pick.

And so we are down to five. Is it just us or does every season of "American Idol" feel a little bit like an Agatha Christie novel? The nefarious killer though isn't so much hidden, it's you -- you're the killer. Every week you vote and it's your vote who determines who lives and who goes home (which is pretty much the same as dying). Tonight you'll watch the final five (not the Cylons, but we like the way you think) perform and then you'll vote and tomorrow one of the five is going away, never to return, and they're disappearance is pretty much going to be all your fault.

We are getting awfully close, people, awfully close. Tonight, seven contestants will perform. Tomorrow, one of those contestants will be sent packing. Can you imagine what it must feel like to still be there at this point? You have to be so close to victory that you can taste it. Of course, on the other hand, the odds are still not in your favor and it has to hurt that much more when you're eliminated. Watch tonight (watch every week) and see if you can't figure out who is getting sent home tomorrow.

Ladies and gentleman, your American Idol! There is a decent chance that your American Idol will be on tonight's episode of "American Idol" because tonight's episode reveals the first set of this season's finalists and one of the finalists is actually going to win the whole shebang, thereby becoming your American Idol even if you hate their guts and wish that they'd never made it past the first audition. See, that's the way it works, you get to vote, but your voting doesn't guarantee that your choice wins, and once the winner is announced, they become your Idol whether you wanted them to be or not. Them's the rules.

Tonight, the semifinalist boys will be performing. It is the first live performance show of the year for "American Idol." It is the first time that you will have the opportunity to take all that you have learned by watching the auditions and the Hollywood round and combine that knowledge with your opinion about what you see tonight and turn that into a vote. Yes, tonight, you get to take part. We aren't going to tell you that you're on center stage, but you've certainly moved a lot closer to it today than you have been in the past.

Jump for joy! Sing for glee (but not for "Glee," because that's a completely different singing show than "American Idol" even if it regularly feels as though the stars of "Glee" are trying out for a huge record contract which doesn't require them pretending to be high schoolers)! "American Idol" is on tonight and is going to have an extra special, super awesome two hour episode! By that we mean, it's going to feature that one judge who was there since the beginning, the host who didn't quit, and those two rock/pop stars whom you're never quite sure if they're living in the same world we live in or not. Extra special and super awesome, no?

After eight episodes of auditions, the time has come for the first episode in the Hollywood Round! It is our hope that Steven Tyler will remain just as off-kilter in Hollywood as he has been during his best moments during the auditions. Oh man did we love it when he told that one dad that the guy's daughter was hot. What would you have done in that situation? Would you trust your daughter to go off to Hollywood with the guy? We tend to think that Tyler didn't really mean anything by it, at least not as it sounded, but we really do love how it sounded and look forward to more of it.

Go ahead, insert your joke about how she ought to be doing this on "Pop Idol," or Britain's "X Factor" or "Britain's Got Talent," we understand where you're coming from. Madonna does spend a whole lot of time across the pond these days, but we still claim here as our own and we're still incredibly pleased that she's going to be previewing her new video, 'Give me all Your Luvin' on "Idol" tonight. The song features not just the legendary singer, but also Nicki Minaj and M.I.A.

Because "American Idol" routinely doesn't have high enough ratings, FOX has decided that tonight they'll be extending primetime so that we all can get a special, extra, edition of "American Idol" following football. Now, the game is set to air following the NFC Championship, so we certainly recommend that you set your DVRs to run awfully long. We couldn't exactly say how long will be necessary, but if you're serious about getting your "Idol" fix, 24 hours extra seems like a pretty safe amount, doesn't it? There is no way they'll let the football game run for 24 hours... even if sometimes it feels like they regularly do (are we right or are we right?).

The roller coaster that is "American Idol" continues its brand new season tonight with even more auditions. Oh sure, we will eventually get past the audition stage and move on to Hollywood, but when these audition moments are gone, you know that you're going to miss them, that you're going to want them back. We suggest you tune in to the brand new season tonight because it still is a brand new season, eventually it will get old and worn in and will still be as exciting as all get out, but right now it's still new and fresh. This is "American Idol," you know you're excited, you know you're very excited.

For season 11, all of season 10's judges will be returning (that would be Randy Jackson, Steven Tyler, and Jennifer Lopez for those of you who have lost track). What will be new and different are the contestants. Now, to be clear, we don't actually mean that they're going to really be completely new and totally different, they will, almost without question, fall into several of the basic "American Idol" archetypes which the show has worked so hard to create over its first 10 seasons, they'll just have different names and slightly different looks.

Over the course of the 127 minutes that "American Idol" airs tonight you will be promised one thing over and over again - they will reveal the winner. We are not going to tell you that you shouldn't bother watching the entire episode, by all means go ahead and watch it, but just be aware - if Ryan Seacrest states at 8:16 that the winner is going to be revealed, he doesn't mean immediately, he means way down the line. You will definitely get a reveal tonight, expect it sometime around 10:00pm (9:00 Central and Mountain).

This season has proven one thing about "American Idol" -- the series can continue (at least for a few seasons) no matter how the judges may change. We'll leave it up to the pundits to decide whether the final two contestants left standing are two of the top ones the show has produced over the course of its 10 season run, we're just going to point out that after tonight's performance show you will have your last opportunity to vote for your choice (if they're still around).

We're sorry, we're pretty sure we discussed this last year with the "American Idol" Hollywood Round, but we can't think about Hollywood without thinking about "Pretty Woman" and the guy who goes around at the beginning (and end?) of the movie explaining how this is Hollywood and everybody's got a dream. We think those words are especially true here with "American Idol" as clearly each and every contestant there has a dream. Mostly they're probably the same dream, but they all still have one. The contestants are all one step closer now to making that dream come true, but who will make it through to the next round and keep the dream alive?

The juggernaut known as "That Show Which is Sporting an Almost Entirely new Group of Judges and Which now has an In-House Mentor" is back for night two tonight, and that means... well... that it's going to be on again. But seriously, we're not quite sure why we all find "Idol" quite as addictive as we find "Idol," but it does remind us of a rollercoaster at Disney World. You see, they have this coaster there that goes 0-60 incredibly quickly, has music blaring, and which just doesn't stop until the last possible second. Plus, the coaster also has Steven Tyler. So, strap in, sit back, and keep your arms and legs inside the vehicle at all times.

Holy macaroni, do you people realize that this is season 10 of "American Idol?" That's right, season 10. Unbelievable. For this first double-digit season for the series you can expect a whole lot of changes. As we all know, Simon Cowell is gone. Ellen DeGeneres is gone. Kara DioGuardi is gone. As for that which will remain the same - Paula Abdul is still gone and Brian Dunkleman is still cursing himself. New this year are Steven Tyler, Jennifer Lopez, and Jimmy Iovine along with stalwarts Randy Jackson and Ryan Seacrest. The big question is whether or not this new-look "Idol" can remain as popular and relevant as past editions. We shall see soon enough.

This is it, we're truly getting down to the wire on this season of "American Idol." This week we only have three contestants left to perform for us, one of whom will be eliminated tomorrow. We're not sure if we're excited to find out whom our Idol is or if we're sad for the season to be so close to ending. Maybe it's both. Maybe it's neither. How quickly times passes. No matter how often we note as much, we are still shocked with the rapidity at which one day morphs into the next. It feels as though the Hollywood Round on "Idol" began yesterday, and yet tonight we see the top four singers perform. That's right, we're down to only four contestants tonight, and by the end of tomorrow night there will be a mere three. What, you've never heard of the Top 11? You think it's only the Top 10 that matter? Apparently someone has forgotten the importance of palindromes. While you look that up, let us remind you that not everyone subscribes to your round number prejudice. Good stuff can come by the dozen, by the bakers dozen, or, in this case, by the palindrome. It's another Tuesday two hour "Idol" tonight, and we're really starting to get to know those final 11. Too bad before too long we're going to lose another singer or two. Watch'em while you can.

Are you out of breath yet? "Idol" has been going for two months, airing up to three episodes a week. They have taken on us on a tour of the country and then on to Hollywood in order to whittle down the contestants further. At the end of tonight's episode we will finally have revealed to us this season's finalists. It is a big moment for those vying to win it all. We don't want to minimize their accomplishments in any way - what they've done is incredible - they do, however, still have an awfully long way to go before the season is finished.

As we noted, yesterday was your first opportunity to vote this season on "American Idol," which makes this your second opportunity overall, but still the first time you can vote on the guys. We, of course, have already made up our minds about who we want to see win, but oddly, there is no equivalent of a write-in vote phone number to call. We are not going to say that last year's Top 36 format on "Idol" didn't work, we're only going to note that this year "American Idol" will be returning to the old-school Top 24. In fact, the Hollywood Round ends tonight and the show is going to be revealing those 24 folks. We won't pretend to know exactly which 24 contestants will be moving on, but we do know that it will be divided evenly into 12 men and 12 women. One of the biggest stories - if not the biggest one - heading into this year's run of "American Idol" is Ellen DeGeneres joining the series as a replacement for Paula Abdul. We're going to start getting some pretty solid answers to those questions tonight as tonight Ellen joins the group in Hollywood.

The "American Idol" judges continue the difficult process of whittling down the competitors and figuring out just who will get that coveted ticket to Hollywood. Yes, some of the decisions are quite easy as many a wannabe who can't actually sing get the opportunity to waste the judges' time. However, there are truly a whole lot of worthy candidates who won't get to make it to Hollywood as well. The biggest questions though for the auditions are - just how many people can Simon make cry and whether or not he practices his most withering lines in the mirror before delivering them on camera.

We're going to go out on a limb here and figure that you've probably heard of "American Idol." If you haven't, we can only assume that someone has printed out this listing, laminated it, and that you happen to be reading it 800,000 years into the future. So, first, congratulations on being a Morlock. Second, this is a singing competition show. People who are amateurs (until is proven otherwise) vie for the chance for a record deal. Before that can happen, however, the judges are forced to go around the country and listen to people who will never get to the final stage of the competition sing. Those auditions begin tonight.

Due to this season's structure change, the "American Idol" semi-finalists were all about celebrating the best of contestants, sending the most popular singers on to the Top 13.
Now that we're in the Top 13, though, it's time to focus on the losers. Starting on Wednesday (March 11), the first "American Idol" contestant will be eliminated from the Top 13.
In addition, Wednesday's show will feature performances by Kelly Clarkson and Kanye West.

Who will be the next American Idol? Will it be Adam Lambert? Lil Rounds? Danny Gokey? Kris Allen?
No, seriously? Who will it be? Because if we knew, we could stop watching!

It's Wild Card time on "American Idol."
As of the writing of this blurb, we don't have a clue how the Wild Card show is going to work. The judges will choose some people. The vote totals from previous weeks will choose some people. Who knows?
All we know is that at the end of the night, we're have this season's "American Idol" Top 12.
Woot!

Look... Until we hear otherwise from the ratings geniuses at Nielsen, we're just going to assume that HitFix readers, like the rest of America, just can't get enough "American Idol."
Following Wednesday's two-hour performance episode, three members of the second group of Top 36 contestants will join the three contestants added last week in the Top 12 for the season.
As always, Ryan Seacrest hosts and Simon Cowell, Kara DioGuardi, Randy Jackson and Paula Abdul judge.

Postponed one night by the State of the Union, it's the second week of Top 36 performances courtesy of a little show we like to call "American Idol."
Since this forecast entry is being written before the *first* group of Top 36 performances, we're going to go out on a limb and say that whether the second group is better or worse than the first, it will have less Danny Gokey (a bad thing) and less Tatiana Del Toro (a good thing).
As always, Ryan Seacrest host and Simon Cowell, Randy Jackson, Paula Abdul and Kara DioGuardi are your judges.

FOX had originally intended for "Idol" to move to 9 p.m. as it has in previous seasons on Wednesday night. Instead, the network decided it was better to air "Lie to Me" with its "Idol" lead-in, so the talent show will air at 8 p.m.
Following Tuesday night's performances, America will have voted. The three singers receiving the most votes will be the first three singers in the season's Top 12.
Expect Ryan Seacrest to prolong the suspense over a full excruciating hour.

All of the auditions? Over.
All of that Hollywood rigamarole? Over.
It's up to you, America. What will you do?
More than a month after its premiere, "American Idol" finally gets down to business, as the first group of 12 semifinalists perform for the judges, but mostly for viewers at home.
Following the two-hour show, phone lines will open for the first time this season.

Last season, "American Idol" short-changed the Hollywood Round, long a fan favorite for its high tension, short fuses and frequent breakdowns.
Which aspiring "Idol" will sneak out after curfew and get drunk at a Sunset Strip bar?
Who will play diva with the other contestants?
Who will Simon Cowell make cry?
We don't know if any of that will happen, but we can guess.

The eighth installment of "American Idol" begins with a two-night, four-hour premiere on FOX.
Sure, ratings were down last season, but that didn't mean that "American Idol" wasn't still the most watched show on TV.
Wednesday's episode probably won't introduce viewers to the next David Cook or Jordin Sparks or Carrie Understood, but it will certainly feature the usual assortment of freakshows who make the "Idol" audition episodes the show's most popular.
In addition, viewers will meet new "Idol" judge Kara DioGuardi and see how she stacks up to her new colleagues.
