The eighth installment of "American Idol" begins with a two-night, four-hour premiere on FOX.
Sure, ratings were down last season, but that didn't mean that "American Idol" wasn't still the most watched show on TV.
Wednesday's episode probably won't introduce viewers to the next David Cook or Jordin Sparks or Carrie Understood, but it will certainly feature the usual assortment of freakshows who make the "Idol" audition episodes the show's most popular.
In addition, viewers will meet new "Idol" judge Kara DioGuardi and see how she stacks up to her new colleagues.

In a little less than two months (on May 21), a winner be declared here on the 13th season of "American Idol." Tonight though, the half-hour live results shows begin. Tonight, things change and we begin something akin to a head-long rush to the end of the year and that May 21st finale. Have you yet decided who is going to win it all? Have you made your pick? We have a couple of people we think might win it all, and we're going to hope that they don't go home tonight.

Next week, the half-hour "Idol" results shows will arrive and with them, regular eliminations of people you may have thought would be your "American Idol." The truth though is this, even if they don't win, those people could be your "American Idol," they just won't be the winner of the series "American Idol." We aren't quite at those half-hour eliminations yet, however. No, that is next week. This week is just good old-fashioned, "American Idol," but in the time period it switched to the other week (9pm).

This is it, people. Well, this is something, but it probably depends on how you define "it" as to whether or not this is truly it. What we are trying to say is that the auditions are over, done with, finished. Tonight, the Hollywood Round begins. That means that singers get told in a wholly different way that they're simply not good enough to win the competition -- not that they're not good singers (except maybe they're not), just that they're not good enough to actually win "Idol." Watch it all go down tonight.

Well, here we are, the end of the third week of the 13th season of "American Idol." We have seen many a person audition, and we've even seen a few get passed along to the next round. We have seen the judges work together (and maybe a little not so much from time to time). We have watched and gotten a flavor for what this new season might bring. Do we like what we see to this point? Are we happy with the new look and feel of "American Idol?" Perhaps you haven't seen enough of it yet and should tune in tonight just to make sure about your feelings.

Last night we got our first look at the new judge on "Idol." We also got our first look at the once and future judge, and last year's returning judge. Plus, you know, Ryan Seacrest was there to really break it all down for us. THe question is, did we see the eventual winner last night? Will we, do you think, see the eventual winner tonight? The audition phase, if you ask us, is where it's still all possible, where anything can happen. Watch tonight and see what that "anything" may or may not actually turn out to be.

Do not try and use any of your logic on us. Yes, it is absolutely true that heading into tonight's episode of "American Idol" there are only two contestants left and that all the votes will have been tabulated, but that's no reason that they can't find 120 extra minutes to pad things out (we're assuming a one minute announcement of the winner followed by a six minute ovation and song). Surely you want to see a few more in-show commercials and give a few final teary farewells to already eliminated contestants and hear a famous person or two sing and ponder which judges won't be asked back for season 13. The season of "Idol" ends tonight, and it's going to be one long finale.

Listen, we don't want to ruin anything here for you about what's going to happen tomorrow night on the "American Idol" finale, but the girl wins. That is just the way it is. For a guy to win at this point would involve some sort of ridiculous save foisted on us by the judges and while we're not sure how much this competition really determines who the best is, having a guy win this season would just destroy any credibility the show might have once had. There have been only women left as contestants left for what, weeks? Watch the last two women compete tonight and decide for yourself who ought to be your American Idol.

Wow. This is it, the top 10 "Idol" contestants of 2013 are performing tonight. The top 10 contestants. It is rather amazing, is it not? After all those auditions and the fights amongst the judges and the Hollywood round and the fights amongst the judges and the semifinals and the fights--you get the idea--the top 10 are here. We are at the top 10 of "American Idol," and that top 10 is going to perform tonight. Tomorrow, one of them will go home and while that will put us ever closer to a winner, the top 9 doesn't quite have the same ring to it, does it?

On a 90 minute episode tonight, this season's "American Idol" finalists will be announced. That makes this a pretty big night, and not just for you, but for those finalists too. There is, quite obviously, a whole long way to go still this season, but the folks who make the cut tonight will already have done an incredible amount. So, celebrate their journey thus far--and all the hard work you've done watching them progress--by tuning into the 90 minute episode.

On tonight's "American Idol," the top 10 male semifinalists will be performing. Now, this is good because it means we're getting that much closer to actually having finalists. It is also good because on what otherwise might be a slow, post-Sweep Tuesday night we're getting a new idol instead of some repeats. Don't give us any of your '"Idol" is always like a repeat because it's just people singing' malarkey. Don't you care about the lives of these people? Aren't you invested in their successes and failures? Don't you hope to see another fight between the judges?

We are not yet at the finalists for "Idol," but we have hit the pre-semis (is that a thing?). There are currently 20 male singers left and 20 female singers left, and tonight 10 of those men will sing (yesterday 10 of the women). Next week we'll get the final two sets of men and women, and then the semi-finalists will be announced. Okay, that's still a ways off, but getting to see the first group of 10 men sing tonight over the course of two hours will certainly give us a far better look at these contestants than we've gotten before.

As we regularly note, we're creeping ever more slowly to the finals. There are still 20 women contestants remaining this year on "Idol" and 10 of them are going to sing tonight. Next week, the final 10 will sing and soon enough, there will be 10--and then only five--women remaining. The other interesting thing to note as the season progresses are the changes at the judges' table. Are these people growing to like each other? Has the displeasure been manufactured? Will one of them be leaving before the season ends (probably not)?

You may not believe this, but the auditions on "American Idol" are finally over. They ended last week and now, this week, we're getting the Hollywood round (or at least the start of it). We aren't at the finalists yet--heck, the top 40 don't get revealed until a week from tomorrow--but we are in Hollywood and that means we're edging ever closer to the point where we all, finally, have to learn everyone's names (that is why they call it the finals, right?). Tune in tonight and see if you can remember these people from their auditions without a voice over reminding you about them.

We don't want to let the cat out of the bag or anything, but they're not going to announce the winner of "American Idol" tonight. in fact, there's actually a pretty bad chance that the eventual winner will even be on tonight's show. Come one though, that's not exactly a reason to not watch. In fact, if we're being honest, this is our favorite part of the show. We love the auditions, the way Simon tears people a new one and then Paula says that he's being too harsh, it's fun. Whoa, we just had a flashback to 2003 or something. We are sure that this year's "Idol" auditions will be just as entertaining.

This is it people, the moment you've been waiting for since the last season ended. What we can promise you for this season is a new set of judges. Yes, Randy Jackson will be back, but outside of that we'll also have Nicki Minaj, Mariah Carey, and Keith Urban. It should make for, at minimum, some interesting moments. Will any of the judges have the ability to tell contestants off when they don't perform as they should? How will Ryan Seacrest react to them? The new season starts tonight and it won't be too long before we get some answers.

Tomorrow night, there will be a new American Idol. Tonight, we will see the final two contestants perform in an effort to court votes one last time. Tomorrow, there will be cheers and accolades for one and terrible sadness for another. Tonight, there is hope eternal for both of our finalists. Tomorrow is an episode replete with filler prior to actually getting the results. Tonight, there is an episode replete with filler between performances. Watch tonight and make your final decision. Watch tomorrow and see who wins.
