Mahershala Ali ("Alphas") is guest-starring tonight on "Alcatraz." Ali will be playing our returnee of the week this episode which means that he's going to be doing some very bad things. The question, of course, is less what very bad things than why he's doing the very bad things. Who is the puppet master? Who is the person pulling the strings? We are going to guess that it isn't Ali; after all, he is a returnee and it seems improbable at this point that a returnee is the man (or woman) with the plan.

We like to think that after tonight's double-episode, "Alcatraz" is going to get locked away in a perfect replica (although with fancier, newer, doodads) of a television set. It won't be the sort of television set we can look at, instead it will be manned by guards and exist next to other shows which have no new episodes left (we imagine "Parenthood" lives right next door). There "Alcatraz" will remain until its jailer decides whether it will return next year with all new episodes. If the jailer is mean, the show will live there forever, and only the guy from "Jurassic Park" will know about it.

We really have no idea what is going on with this series. Oh, we get the weekly hunt for the killer, but we have no idea what is going on with the stuff in the 1960s and how the killers are showing up in the present and what the deal is with Parminder Nagra's character and why Sam Neill is doing another television series and oh so many other things. We figure that J.J. Abrams wants us to have no idea what is going on with the whole disappearing-reappearing bad guy stuff, so good for him, but, we really really want to know. Are we going to find out this week just because there's a double episode? No, but maybe we'll get closer.
