The number of milestones that "Cops" has hit over the course of its 25 year run is vaguely astounding. From sheer number of years on the air to number of episodes aired, to the tally of inebriated individuals claiming to be stone cold sober, it is astounding. Tonight, the 25th season of the series ends its run. Think of this season, come the credits, as the allegedly inebriated individual who has finally been caught sitting on the steps of their house. Their is a sense of satisfaction at the chase having ended, but also one of upset that it can't last just once more around the trailer park.

Wow, 850 episodes. "Cops" is hitting episode 850 tonight. That is unbelievable. Well, that's not entirely true, obviously it's believable because it's totally happening and we see and understand it and believe it, but it's still pretty amazing, isn't it? Yes, tonight, "Cops" is going to be airing episode 850 and, amazingly, people still run and they still say they didn't do it, and they still claim to not be drunk. Perhaps more amazingly, it's still fun to watch the whole thing go down. Tune in tonight and see if you don't enjoy yourself with the bad boys.

You may not have realized this, but even bad boys celebrate the holidays. According to our "Cops" knowledge, they tend to do this in the exact same way they celebrate Saturdays, Fridays, Tuesdays, and the sun rising each morning and setting each night -- by getting horribly tanked and picking a fight with everyone around them. What makes this the holidays is that the bad boys do this wearing a Santa hat (and sometimes nothing else). We don't advocate such actions, just watching the cops on "Cops" as they go after such revelers.

We will not ask the question. We will not ask the question. We will not ask the question. Do you have any idea how hard it is to talk about "Cops," which is returning tonight with its 25th season premiere, and not ask the question. People are begging for the question to be asked (which is not the same as begging the question), but we refuse. We will not query the bad boys as to their forthcoming actions upon the arrival of the good guys. We will not ask them of their intentions. Instead, we will watch and we will see what said intentions are... but we will not ask them about their plans in advance.

It is true that "America's Most Wanted" has been relegated to quarterly specials rather than a weekly series this year. Its companion series, "Cops," isn't going anywhere though. There may not be any huge criminal masterminds out there anymore, but there are still a whole lot of drunk drivers, drunk walkers, and petty criminals who can fill our screens on Saturday nights with their shenanigans and ridiculous tirades. If it's Saturday night, it must be "Cops."

Listen, bad boys, just because tonight is the "Cops" season finale, that doesn't mean that they're not going to come for you in the future. You still, if you're a bad boy, need to contemplate that and really consider whether doing whatever your doing is worth knowledge that they will certainly be coming for you. You need to think about what you're going to do. Yes, this is the season finale, and yes, we do expect the busts to be bigger and better this week, but this is just a TV finale not a real life officer finale.

Although we like the new, the different, the weird, the strange, the off-kilter, and the unexpected, we take a modicum of comfort (or a quantum of solace if you prefer) from that which is unchanging, that which remains constant. We find it greatly calming to know that out there, patrolling the streets, are a whole lot of officers of the law. We find it even more pleasing to know that, year-in and year-out, we can turn on FOX on a Saturday night and watch said officers arrest drunks, stop domestic disputes, and pull over speeders. It just makes it feel as though everything is right with the world.

Let's argue for a moment that you are in fact a bad boy. You may, after tonight, get to breathe a sigh of relief... at least a short one. This is the "Cops" season finale, which means that they're not going to be coming for you in the near future (at least not with cameras). Please, don't imagine that we're in any way suggesting that you can go off and commit a crime without repercussions - committing illegal acts is unquestionably wrong. Our point is only that there aren't going to be new episodes for a while and that makes this one something of a special affair.
